: Transmission Removel
LoneZuk 09-15-2002, 02:54 PM How do you remove the transmission !!
Without:
.... Removing the engine
.... Cutting out the cross member
I have removed the drive shafts, transfer case, rear transmission support , shifter and muffler supports.
Do you unbolt the transmission, slide it back, then angle bell housing downwards and side it out forwards and down ?
mikrosilakhan 09-15-2002, 03:01 PM a few options...
pull the tranny back after its loose and take the clutch out, grind away at the crossmember "its a small amount"
moto261 09-15-2002, 03:03 PM slide the tranny back and twist it to the pass. side and it slides right out
:massey:
bobaki 09-15-2002, 04:17 PM or take out the two motor mount bolts (say driver/exhaust side)cockengine to one side .......remove trans ......:D if as I do you have sidetrack eng/trans pull eng.......Mr moto sounds right also
LoneZuk 09-15-2002, 04:27 PM Thanks everyone for the information.
I want to avoid cutting out the cross member.
I try sliding it to one side.
With those Toyota axles there is lots of working room. It puts the transmission way up there when working on ones back !
If I am correct there are only four (4) bolts holding the transmission to the engine. Two at the bottom and two at the top.
Must the starter be removed ?
J-Dogg 09-15-2002, 04:39 PM Yes the starter has to be removed. I left the T/C in mine and opted to trim the cross member. Not very much has to be tooken out.
thecarman 09-15-2002, 05:55 PM I got mine out (and in) without pulling the T-case or cutting the crossmember. You gotta play with positioning it right, and then force it a little. :D Should be easier if you can slide the trans back and unbolt the pressure plate from the flywheel first (I did NOT do this). Getting it out wasn't much of a problem, but getting it in was interesting. I did it though! :D
bobaki 09-15-2002, 06:36 PM thats when cocking the engine comes in........:D

bobaki 09-15-2002, 08:58 PM I was talking tracker engine/tracker 2wd trans...........trans is 6.5 inches longer than sammy..........:D
zukimoo 09-16-2002, 05:05 PM I cursed while I was pulling it out and I cursed when I put it back in......you just have to move it around a bit to get it out. I didn't have to cut or grind anything but I got a good laugh at the weight of the tranny.... I was used to the big trucks.
Don't forget to unplug the reverse switch....I broke mine while pulling on it...
92 Zukimoo with piston #3 gone, 87 tin top, 88 soft top all covered in mud........
LoneZuk 09-16-2002, 09:22 PM Without cutting anything the transmission came out. I had to twist and turn it a bit as well as repositioning the engine.
Getting it back in should be a pain.
Now to have the flywheel turned.
And another thread on the disc thick ness.
Bobzooki 09-17-2002, 06:51 AM Hey George, how's it coming this time? Mine just keeps transmuting...
MuddMachine 09-17-2002, 07:18 AM No cutting required ! :flipoff2: :flipoff2: :flipoff2:

The dual case project has stalled out. I built the divorced unit using an inchworm adapter and my own front plate, but the package length is to long with a stock wheel base.
I also needed a clutch. I had been putting this off until my dual case conversion was in progress. Giving up on that, it was clutch time.
I picked up an 85 4x4 toy, maybe I will have to install the dual cases in it. A good transfer case setup is really a bad thing to waste.
I am planning to be at the colorado4x4 swap meet this weekend checking things out. I hope to be there in the Zuk.
Take care
slider 09-18-2002, 05:41 AM hey Mikro...
You going to ZookiFest in MA on the 26th?
Get a trailer and bring some of those Suzuki's there...
you might be able to sell some.
I could use a Traker engine?!
