I have a Tacoma axle that has a bunch of assd. brackets, junk and spring pads in the wrong places. What do you suppose is the best way to remove them?
I keep thinking hotwrench but the housing is not as robust as a Cruiser housing and am partially afraid of warping the housing.
I have already spent quite a bit of time with the grinder and die grinder without much success.
Any ideas? Or perhaps someone to hold my hand and tell me that the hot wrench will not destroy the housing???

Use a blue tip & blow at a 90 degree angle from the part you want to save, the moment you complete your cut quench it with water, wait until you get into someof the cast steel spring perchs on a 14 bolt, damnest things Josh and I have ever tried to torch, they are almost molded to the tubes.......
he was havin' hell on one and in typical "Wise One' fashion I took the torch and saw why:rasta:

we cut a bunch a stuff off my buddies jeep axles (Dana 30 and 25 I think??) and never once burned thru the housing.
90 degrees as apposed the axle, and blow the welds. The hit it with some water. We used a spray bottle and the after a few sprays poured water on it. Piece of cake.
Those tacoma axles have got to be thicker than those POS jeep axles. :D

on misc. brackets and junk i like a thin cutting wheel on a 4-1/2" grinder applied just inside the weld, then an easy grind to smooth.

I never could get a grinder to work well but your friend the sawzall works real good then grind smooth.....

and if you are still skeered of it, wrap a wet rag around the housing near the hot work. It will help absorb the heat that does get to the axle. I like TLCObsessions idea about the plasma cutter if you have access to one. Fast, clean, and minimal heat.

Used to own a sheet metal shop...my partner would have recommendded RHINO's way...least amount of heat transfer with this method...be careful how much you heat a housing and then quench with water...

plasma cutter is relatively loe heat as opposed to the blue tipped wrench, just do as afore mentioned, point it away from the part you are trying to preserve.

you would not believe how quick a good sawzal & metal blade can cut those brackets off!!!
