Can it be done without a lot of hassle
What I have is a 89 yj with a 2.5 engine with a 5spd trans 231 transfer case
5:38 gears in dana 44's
I have gathering parts for a engine - auto trans swap.
I have a 90 3.1 gm mpi engine and a 700r4 trans, I am in the process of rebuilding the trans now and from reading about this transmission it will fit
GM 2.5 2.8 and 3.1 60 degree engines. My questions are is the 2.5 in my jeep a gm engine and will it fit to the 700r4 with out a lot of problems. I have measured the bolt distances on the bell housings and they are the same spacing and the alignment bushings around the two bellhousing are in the same spot.
Now the v-6 has more hp and torque but I use my jeep 98 percent of the time
offroad crawling rocks and doing trails in 4low and extreme power isnt necesary. questions, comments, ideas, let me hear them

You really don't want that tranny behind the 2.5, it probably won't have the power to get out of your driveway. Theres difference between lack of power and just plain rediculous. Jeep never put and auto behind that engine for a reason either.

The 2.5 in your jeep IS NOT a GM engine. I'm not 100% sure that it won't work, but i've never heard of it being done so at the very least I can say its not a common swap. Jeep has auto trannys that are really really good that bolt right in and they are readily available if you just have to have an auto. Check Novak's database you can usually find some good info there.

Hmm just looked at Novak's

Apparently it can't be adapted to the AMC 2.5

was just wondering because I had read it will fit the 2.5
I will continue to do the 3.1 engine trans swap

the 2.5 has the 60 deg GM bell housing pattern, i'm not sure if you'll be able to find a flex plate for the swap.

Jeep did put an auto (TF999) behind the 2.5 starting in '98

i have read about an AW4 swap behind a 2.5 also.

good luck wit the swap...

x2 i had a bone stock sbc 350 with that tranny behind it and it didnt feel like it had any power when the turbo 350 went behind it there was a huge differance

He has the AMC/Jeep 2.5 not the "Iron Duke" GM 2.5 that came in CJ's. If he had the later his swap would work.

You may have the same physical sized engine and displacement but you do not have the same engine he does. Your 2.5 is light years better then his and has better fuel injection.

If you are interested in an auto I'd keep it simple and go with one of the TF line of trannies. I think you are gonna find that it will turn your Jeep into an anemic road tampon however.

Some where along my travels I dated a girl that bought a 4 cyl auto TJ. I think that a VW bug could have beat this thing in a drag race..... Think of it like this. If you compare the speed and power difference of a 4.0 stick to a 2.5 stick, thats the same difference proportionally as the 2.5 stick to the 2.5 auto....its pretty bad lol.

Jeep did use autos with the 2.5l in both YJs and TJs

1997, I've got one. 97 TJ 2.5l MPFI, and I've always understood it to be TF904. 3 speed auto, no overdrive.

My Barbie jeep is the 4 banger, auto, 3.73 gears, and 31" ATs. It is slow, gets horrible gas mileage, and can't keep up with traffic on the interstate, but around town, and off road it's got enough motivation to get out of it's own way. I too am collecting parts, it's just taken me 5 years, and all I've got is a pile of parts, nothing done with them... sigh.

Not in 1989 they didn't. Only later model YJs and TJs with the upgraded motors got them.

You only read a portion of the post(s) and didn't get all the info.

After reading everything here and on aa and a few other places it may bolt up but finding a flywheel would be tough, just reading that the 700r4 had the same bolt pattern sparked interest in if it was feasable. I want a little more power but want the auto , crawling rocks with the three pedal sucks but I dont wheel with a heavy throttle, so I dont need a powerhouse engine the 4.3 would of been my first choice but I came across the mpi 3.1 and trans at a good price.
thanks for your opinions.
