: Project Go-Low

Well it started this morning about 8:00 and I just finished about 6:00.

I started off this morning relocating the Transmission Cooler I had in front of the radiator. In Poteau, I was running hot on the highway, it was good on the trail however, and the transmission was never getting over 180*.

I moved the cooler to the rear under the tub and now the engine is perfect and the tranny is heating up again:mad:

I am going to get a small fan and dedicate it to that cooler.

Next, I spent the majority of the day removing the lift I put on Kate to make the 42's and new fenders work.

I removed the 24" add-a-leafs on all 4 corners, one small leaf in the front and replaced the 3" over stock rear shackles with 2" over stock ones that were on there before.

All of this got me 2" lower from start to finish.

Here is a before and after shot....

Next, I took Kate over to a construction site and drove up some 3' concrete barriers to see what hit.

I removed my bumpstops completely in the front and left them in the rear.

The front pushed all the way into the fender and the rear actually stopped before it go into the tub too bad.

It will be much better when I get the Tub fenders made in November by RustyB.

Since the tube fenders are going to have to wait until November, and I have a lot of wheeling to do in October, I went ahead a WHACKED the fenders A-LA Jimmy.......

Just left enough for a wrench or a cold beer. :p

Another View....painted it like Jimmy too until I get the tube fenders, this is Kate's look :D

Finally, not only did I want to go low, but I wanted to go a little wider.

I got some 2" Billet spacers from www.performancewheel.com, $355 to the house.

I want to try the extra width in a way I can reverse if I don't like it.

Always a Cruiserhead with a SOA and stock axles looking for spacers if these are not the answer.

Anyway, here are the measurements:

Width-WMS to WMS 66"......Overall width 87"

Height-to the top of the cage.....81" :D

23" Breakover at the center of the skidplate

12 3/4" at the rear D60

13" at the front 9"

Here is a common Cruiser measurement if you want to see how a Cruiser with a stock SOA with FJ-40 springs in the front and stock FJ-55 springs in the rear and 42's measures up to your rig.....

Bottom of the door frame........36"

Nolen,
Have you thought about tieing the front part of the bumper to the grill hoop? That's what I've been planning and you are almost there. Just knowing it can't fold back in a roll and protecting the radiator. Definetly looks good lowered.
First weekend with the longfields, the newfields are in pieces. Fordyce was killer, with not many people on the trail and the river cosssings were over flooboard deep.:D

I hope this makes it a lot harder for you to roll..
Let me know what degree sidehill it is good till will ya?

Lookin good though.

When are you going to try out some mud?????

(you will hate driving through puddles... ;) )

If i remember corectly didn't you recently replace those fenders in order to keep the "Cruiser Look" on the front end?

I think I am going to keep it stand alone when I do the tube fenders unless I can make them tie in descreetly.

Glad the longfields held up...the Newfields are just shit.

That is a fact...I have been making "Form" decisions, not "Function" decisions and it has been bad (ie Rollin' Nolen ;))

The Tube fenders are going to look "Cruiserish" but they will go to the hood.

Nolen, nice job on the spelling there in the first couple of posts. What happend? Did grandfather old cough medicine get the best of you.:flipoff2: :D

Anyways, looks good man. I just have one question, are you running 8 lug, or 6 lug? From the sound of it, you are six lug, but I wasn't completely sure. It that is the case, your rear axle must be semi floating then. Just curious

what's this i hear??

"wider is better"??

well, i think you will like the extra width, and lower COG. I sure scared coyote last night on a couple of sidehills. I was like "what angle?" as long as the spacers don't shear the lug studs off, you'll be fine!

These are the spacers with built in lugs....they are much stronger than those where you just add longer lug nuts.

They are just harder to check to make sure they are tight.

But, you know we love you Nolen, even if you do drive a Toyota

Nolen, Any bad experiences yet with removing the small ones yet? Want to drop my height front and rear and have been debating about removing the two smaller flat springs...guess I could call Alcan and see what they say....

wngrog
09-18-2002, 07:58 PM
I have experimented a lot with removing leafs over the years and i have never had a problem to date doing it.

Just removing the small leafs does not do much for height though.

coyote
09-18-2002, 08:16 PM
Any idea other then a spring swap to get it lower? I just want about an inch lower...its fairly easy and quick....the nice part about the small springs is that they don't affect much characteristics of the spring in general other then load carrying....

wngrog
09-18-2002, 09:08 PM
What kind of shackles do you have? Stock shackles and the short leaf should get you where you want to be.

coyote
09-18-2002, 09:14 PM
I think like 2.5 over stock but I'm stuck with the front shackle length and height...guess I will have to play swaps around with it....and I still don't know how you get that thing in the garage....mine won't fit and I've only got 36" tires and going to 38.5" ones....my cage might be a little high....it might get close someday......
