: chevy 44 front axle help
Mopar96 08-10-2009, 12:04 AM Ok i picked up a set of chevu 3/4 ton axles in a matching set witha HD 44 front and 14 bolt rear with 4:10 gears. I have been rebuilding them slowly and have run into no problems on teh rear but the front is another story.
First I need to replace the u-joints but cant get the spindle off. Next teh front only came with ONE locking hub on the drives side. the other side just had like a dust cover type cover on it. I ordered a set of locking hubs in a 19 spline count cause thats what the count is.
Now for the issue. I got the hubs went to see how they were going to look and the center spline section is right on but the chrome cap that has the lock lever is way to smalle and the bolt pattern is to small.
any ideas? as to what this axle is? or am i missing something
Grumpy_old_fart 08-10-2009, 12:12 AM you have a big hub front end.
get the right hubs.
you need hubs for a 70-76, or to change wheel hubs to a 77 and later front so you can use the lockouts you just bought.
Mopar96 08-10-2009, 03:48 PM Thanks for the info. Looked it up and Warn does not make hubs for that year chevy HD44.
Superwinch makes the right ones so looks like im callin superwinch tommorrow.
randy92782 08-10-2009, 05:21 PM Really? I thought for sure they would. hmm
Anyways i was gonna say big hub 44 also. I asked about it a few years ago. You might even be able to find a set of old spicers to fit your application instead of the superwinch ones. I don't like superwinch though. some like these maybe

Mopar96 08-10-2009, 05:47 PM Why yes that is what mine came with. The top one to be exact. But only on the driver side.
Other side had a dust cover thing.
Anyone know where i could find a set of og. spicers?

Well they're kinda hard to come by. Don't think you can just go to a site and buy them outright. Usually check ebay or such. If you're looking to get it back in working order you may have to go aftermarket
Mopar96 08-10-2009, 07:55 PM The front end is need of some real love. as far as brakes and joints go. I would like to just find a set of hubs that will work. not to particular to any brand. just not mile marker.
Still need to figure out how to get the spindles off so i can get the shafts out!!!!!!!
meangreen39 08-10-2009, 08:08 PM install the nuts on the studs so the tips of the studs are almost flush with the ends of the nuts (to keep from damaging the threads) now knock all the studs out of the spindle with a hammer. now place a piece of wood on top of the spindle and give it a few whacks.... works for me everytime.
the_experience3006 08-10-2009, 08:36 PM Do you have a slide hammer? A spindle puller is a cheap investment that is well worth it. Most of them fit like three different spindle threads so they fit a multitude of axles. I got mine in a cheap ($100?) set of Performance Tool spindle nut sockets.

trkklr77 08-10-2009, 08:37 PM WARN MAKES HUBS FOR THOSE AXLES!!!!!!!
they are called EXTERNAL HUBS.
the one pictuerd are an earlier version that come with a steel spacer that convert the external hub to an internal hub.
you can knock the steel spacer ooff then they will match.
the external hub is the same one used for fords, jeeps, dodges and scouts.
you want pn#9072 for primi's http://www.warn.com/truck/hubs/premium_application_chart.shtml
and it MIGHT!!! be 9790 for the standard but im not 100%. http://www.warn.com/truck/hubs/application_chart.shtml
just4cuz 08-10-2009, 10:12 PM I got a set of Warns on my 76. I can send a picture of them in a couple days if you want to post it up.
swampers1226 08-10-2009, 10:34 PM i got warn external hubs on both my hd 44s. they run bout 149 new just about everybody sells um
Grumpy_old_fart 08-10-2009, 11:08 PM to remove the spindle, get a rubber hammer. hit the spindle with a hammer. if you cant get it to move, hit it again, but go around the spindle and hit it to move it in different directions. Ive never had a problem with them. I suppose they could be rusted on, but Ive also hit the brake backing plate and used it to help remove the spindle... just takes the right touch.
trkklr77 08-10-2009, 11:22 PM i did some work on a customers 88 blazer a few weeks ago, it took over an hour of full on assualt swinging with a 32oz rubber dead blow.
then i spent another 3hrs trying to get the adjuster sleave out, and the upper threads clean enought put the new one in and get it set right.

Thanks!! ill be trying this tommorrow.
i got warn external hubs on both my hd 44s. they run bout 149 new just about everybody sells um
I got warns and the part number on them is 9790

trkklr77 08-11-2009, 01:13 AM ok, that why i said they MIGHT!! be them.
the 9072 are what you want.
when you take the hub off the one side, knock that steel body a few times with a hammer, it will come off and look just like the other. then the external hubs will bolt right on.
meangreen39 08-11-2009, 06:06 AM alot of times the spindle rusts to the studs also (of course i do live in the rust belt). thats why its so much easier to knock the studs back then one good whack and the spindle will usually just fall off. its alot easier then spending an hour or more beating the hell out of your spindle.
b454rat 08-11-2009, 06:23 AM Thre is a set of the yellow-ish lockouts on evilbay. I got a set of yellow and a super nice set of red Ford's.
Keep whacking the snot out of it, eventually it will come off. I had a bitch of a time on mine as well.
Grumpy_old_fart 08-11-2009, 08:32 AM I have a 52 oz deadblow... works great.
leeman1790 08-11-2009, 09:55 AM I have a 52 oz deadblow... works great.
Yeah...like every one else said just hit the spindle. I run superwinch external lockouts on my 60 and havn't had any breakage yet besides one stub, but I expect too. Then I'll go 35 spline and chevy hubs.
Mopar96 08-11-2009, 02:16 PM Here is a pic of what the hubs look like on the axle
http://i599.photobucket.com/albums/tt76/BigGreen96/GEDC0193.jpg
here is it next to the factory one.

see my issue.
meangreen39 08-11-2009, 03:20 PM those warn lockouts arent for the hd. take pics of both sides of your axle. the corner with the chrome cover sounds like a standard full time 44 hub.

Ya I am thinking is has one internal and one external as well. You probably just need another full time hub then your lockouts will work.
later
jenks
Mopar96 08-11-2009, 03:55 PM The axle side in the pic is the side that didnt have a hub. I wll get some more pics. here in a few.
meangreen39 08-11-2009, 04:12 PM in that case it looks like all you need is another lockout for a hd44.

Mopar96 08-11-2009, 04:49 PM here are some more pics of the side with out the hub from the factory. The side with the hub is all tore apart down to the spindle so i cant really get any good pics i just slid the wheel hub on. But i did take a pic if the lock out on the wheel hub

the_experience3006 08-11-2009, 06:35 PM So I'm the only person that uses the proper (:flipoff2:) tool for removing spindles? Even our rusted out nasty Minnesota ones come off within three cracks of the slide hammer. But hitting the spindle works too I suppose if you enjoy frustration (yes, I've done it a million times...that's why I bought a puller).
Elvis38 08-11-2009, 06:47 PM You want the Warn premiums. I did a Disc Brake conversion on my I.H. Luckily i was able to reuse the I.H lockouts. The premiums will look basically the same.
Mopar96 08-11-2009, 07:15 PM Ok so i want the premiums then.
I ordered the standards for a 78+ 3/4 ton cause that was want it was told the axles were out of. Is my year right or is that wrong too??

you have a big hub front end.
get the right hubs.
you need hubs for a 70-76, or to change wheel hubs to a 77 and later front so you can use the lockouts you just bought.
hmmm.....
I think you already had that information available to you...
Pay attention.
Mopar96 08-11-2009, 10:27 PM opps my bad. Had a brain fart.
You live up to your screen name lol :p
Thanks for the help guys!!

just4cuz 08-11-2009, 10:58 PM The Warn hubs pictured above are what I have. The cap looking thing on the side without a hub is called a drive flange. All GM trucks with a 203 transfer case had drive flanges because they were full time 4wd.
Back in the old days when you bought a part time kit for the 203 t-case, part of the kit was a set of hubs. This was before Mile Marker even marketed their own hubs. They supplied the Warn hubs with the kit.
