Im trying to at the moment and as I figured the Alabama DMV isnt worth a fawk. Hell I had to go there 3 times when I moved to this state just to get all the crap for a drivers license.
I bought a new 05 XR650R that I have put the Baja Design Dual Sport kit on ( high low beam, blinkaz, tail light, tag, horn etc... ) and I also put a TrailTech Vapor computer on it so Id have a speedo as well. Just been outlaw riding it but sooner or later Im going to get pulled by the man.
Anyone been through the process and have any advise or wisdom to share ?
Sillyneck will be proud..... I jumped a MX double with it last week. :flipoff2:

I've had two street titled dirt bikes.
First one I bought that way. XR600R. Previous owner jumped through the flaming hoops at an Iowa DMV and had it inspected and retitled as a road bike. Many states actually have an official way to do this.
Second was a KX500 that I bought with no title. I jumped through the hoops at my Virginia DMV to obtain a title from just a bill of sale. It has a 17 digit VIN just like any other bike and nobody asked if it was a dirt bike or not! They didn't stamp "off road only" on the title! I never had the cojones to actually take it out on the highway, but I could have!
An XR650R would make a kick ass dual sport. Does it have a thermostat? I have to wonder if it will over-cool being water cooled.

Over-cooling is not an issue... Matter of fact they dont like sitting at stop lights . Lots of folks run them as DS. I was actually looking for an L until I started looking deeper and decided the R was the bike I really wanted. Shit I rode it to work yesterday 27miles one way and Sunday I put around 70 road / backroad and trail miles on it. Its a kickass bike, I've only had it a week but got right at 300 miles on it .
Few pics from Sunday's cruise...

Welcome to the wonderful world of this bike:grinpimp:
First off, the process is going to differ from state to state. Have you talked to anyone at the DMV to find out what the process was?
Even the process can differ from agent to agent. There's a conversation in progress over on TT about OK procedures and it's varied throughout the state, which doesn't make sense. For me, I had it pretty easy. All the agent did when I showed up with my XR650R was do a VIN inspection, while others throughout the state are requiring all the receipts on all of the street legal equipment required. Doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me, maybe the state ought to be smart and have the cops do it.
I really wish I could be more help than that, but that's about the only piece of advice I can give................................
And if you're wondering, no my bike wasn't street legal when it got inspected. It was missing the mirrors, but had everything else required, the agent just didn't check for it:laughing:

I think Im going to go in the morning to the DMV and just see how they treat the situation. I hear ya on the agent, been trying to find one of those buddy of a buddy things to no avail. Right now they could technically get me on the mirror's and not having DOT tar's. Im pretty legit outside of those two things.
Im going to see how today sizes up at work and plan accordingly. If I can come in several hours late with out getting to far behind I'll go in tommorow and let ya'll know what I have to endure.
