alright,
I realize this is a dumb newbie question, but I have been frustrated to the point that I am willing to be roasted. I have stripped down my fj40 hard top for paint and now I am attempting to remove the existing paint. I have been using the sanding wheel adapter for my drill with 120, 80, and 60 grit paper and I have also tried a wire wheel; it's going slooooow. So my question is what in your opinion is the best way to remove paint (realize that I dont have the dough to buy an air compressor and sand blaster)

thank you in advance

Go to your local automotive paint supply house and get some "Airplane Remover" or automotive paint remover.

If you don't have any local check Eastwoodcompany.com and look for part number 34069Z 22.99 per gallon.

4 1/2" angle grinder with sandpaper adapter. That is what i use. If you use the flap style sand paper disks you will not need need the adapter. The flap style disks are like $7.00 for the Dewalt brand but they are worth it. It takes off the paint and leaves a nice shiny finish to the metel. I would also recommend Rustoluem Industrial spray paint. The paint lasts a long time and its pertty damn resitant to chips. Just my .02 cents..

The Sanding block method will give you the best results. And when you done sanding off the old paint, to the point where the high spots are bare metal then you may only need one coat of primer to get her nice and smooth.... "course I also wasted a bunch of nights sanding a race car over and over agian to get it smooth.... damn that thing had a nice mirror paint job when I got done.

OH CHIT!

You need to post in the LAND CRUISER section... folks, those tops are NOT metal, but fiberglass with a metal lip. Some of those CHEMICAL strippers will do a good job of softening the fiberglass to the point where you can not use it!!! Ditto for anything like a wire brush.

If you are down to the point of 200 grit... primer, sand, primer,
sand, then shoot. Uh, check with the paint store about priming fiberglass (not sure if epoxy like DP90 is compatible).

Uh, hope you're painting the top WHITE like it should be! :)

Then cut out the fender wells, bolt on some 38's... bolt in a cage, and go have a little fun! No one will ever see the top! :flipoff2:

good paint stripper is messy and it stings like a sonofabitch when it gets on bare skin. 5 years ago, I sould ahve said suck it up, go spend the $50 on stripper and scrapers and just get it done. Today, I'd opne the phone book and call local sandblasting shops for estimates.

If you are going to just repaint it, you don't have to get all the old paint off. If you have sanded it as much as you said you have, you just need to get some filler type primer and spray it on. It cost a little more than regular primer, but all you have to do is put 2 good coats on primer, sand it down and paint it. The primer is designed to fill in small irregularities for a real nice finish.

I am not painting the fiberglass part of the top, just sand it and it's as white as the day it came from the factory. I am painting the metal sides, back, doors and eventually the rest of the truck. I may be a newbie, but I am not stupid
