: What will fit (16" rims on on YJ axles)
Firefyter_Emt 08-11-2009, 09:52 PM To go as cheap as humanly possible, what can I scrounge up at a junk yard that will fi 16" rims? I am not really feeling lie shelling out $250 plus shipping if I can get some decent steel rims at a salvage yard.
I know the Ranger shares the same 4.5-5 bolt pattern, but does anyone know what else does? It looks like the Crown Vic may fit as well.
Ideally, I would like some 1970's style plain steel rims that would have hubcaps over them, but will fit a styled steel spoke rim. I just want to steer clear from a look that appears to be a modern GM missing a hubcap look.
Thanks guys, I recently scored a nice set of swampers and want to fit them under my toy.
rockr 08-11-2009, 09:55 PM why not some stock TJ Rubicon 16" rims/ i have them on my YJ with 245-75-16 MTR's. keep your eye open on CL.
Firefyter_Emt 08-11-2009, 10:32 PM I thought the newer TJ - JK jeeps had a larger bolt pattern? Plus, I am looking for cheap... For about $65 a wheel I can but some cheap D-spokes and then you add shipping. I am thinking in the range of $25-$40 used wheel cost or so.
jscherb 08-11-2009, 10:47 PM TJ and YJ bolt patterns are the same (5 on 4.5), 2007 and up JK's have 5 on 5.
Pictured below is a 16x8 steel wheel from an Explorer, which has a 5 on 4.5 bolt pattern. I use this wheel as a trail spare for my TJ pickup, which has Lincoln alloy space-saver spares bolted to the bed sides (space saver spares are ok on the street but would be useless on the trail). I think I paid about $15 for this wheel at a junkyard.
On the Ford/Lincoln wheels I've used on my TJ, the center hole is slightly too small to fit over the TJ axle centers, so you'll have to enlarge the hole a bit. I suspect most Ford wheel are this way. The hole is only maybe 0.020" undersize, so enlarging it is easily done with a file (just be careful to keep not to file the hole off-center). I haven't tried Ford wheels on a YJ but I suspect you may have the same issue fitting Ford wheels on a YJ.

crashnzuk 08-11-2009, 10:52 PM Yes, Ford center holes are a bit small. The Jeep wheels would be best if you can find them. Incidentally, that wheel above is the same wheel used on slightly older Crown Vic police cars. If you get the right lug nuts, you can run the little center cap that snaps onto them. That would give you a Ford logo though:flipoff2:

Firefyter_Emt 08-12-2009, 12:15 AM What about the Liberty? Any chance the 16" wheels from the 02-07 liberty would fit?
crashnzuk 08-12-2009, 08:19 AM I didn't think of those, I'm sure they'd fit too.

By the way, do you have a build thread for your Jeep, I am intrigued by what you are showing there...
Well, I called a couple yards and I have one that had a set of OE Liberty wheels (that share the 5 on 4.5 pattern) and I can grab them for $35 per wheel. Give them a quick sandblast and powder coat in the shop and I think that will look the best for low money. I still need to find out if they will clear though. Anyone happen to have access to a Liberty and a Wrangler that can test this? (I know... long shot!)
Thanks for all the help guys!

Yes... the build thread for the "Retro Wrangler", shown below at Moab, is on CJ-8.com at http://www.cj-8.com/forum/showthread.php?t=18796
If you like the Retro Wrangler, you may be interested in my current Jeep truck project, which is CJ-based. That build thread is on JeepForum at http://www.jeepforum.com/forum/showthread.php?t=709132

crashnzuk 08-12-2009, 07:06 PM I'm sure the Liberty wheels will fit, they use the same 8 1/4" rear axle as the older Cherokees, so the pilot hole should be fine. I have access to Liberty wheels, but not a stock YJ axle anymore. I could probably measure a center hole for you if you need.

If you could that would be great, also the back spacing would be very helpful!

crashnzuk 08-13-2009, 05:02 PM Well, work went to shit last night and I wasn't able to measure a wheel, but the wiki link above looks like it'll answer your questions. Even without that, I'd be very confident that they'll be fine.

Firefyter_Emt 08-13-2009, 05:06 PM Well, I was able to really luck out today and picked up a spare wheel & tire assy today! Funny thing is that stock tire is pretty near the height of these 31"s! I never would of guessed the Liberty's had that big of a tire on them.
The rim was removed after a mild collision, but a spin balance showed that the wheel is not bent so they kept it. Now not only can I test fit the rim, but after I mount one of the swampers, I can check for clearance as well!
Firefyter_Emt 08-13-2009, 08:46 PM Well, after a test fit with the rim, I mounted up one of the swampers on to the Liberty rim and did a test fit on the Jeep. There is a little minor rub at full turn, but not a big deal. My Jeep is more for around town playing than any serious wheeling. I might just have to take her out to play with these new tires though! They do look diffrent compared to the stock rally wheel / 30" BFG-AT combo that was on it. These rims look huge due to the shape, but I think the stock center caps may make the rims look a bit smaller. She's a bit low in the front, but mostly because I have swapped over to a CJ front clip and the fenders are lower than the YJ's were. I am debating maybe using that replacement 1" body lift/body mount kit they have now. My body mounts are shot, and the 1" is not all that much. That should be enough for what I do with her.
Here is a shot of the Liberty wheel and the new swampers mounted up. This is sitting on the ground so rear clearance is just fine.
