: 2009 Mercury 9.9 outboard
Shawnboy 08-12-2009, 09:26 AM Well, my ancient 2 stroke Johnson 9.9 finally gave up the ghost and if I want to go fishing this weekend, I have got to come up with a replacement.
Bass Pro has the 9.9 short shaft Merc 4 stroke complete with tank, hose and a 5 year non diminishing warranty for what seems like a fair price.
Not much info out there for the new stuff. Anybody have anything good or bad to say about this particular outboard? Or just Merc outboards in general?
This is going to be pushing a Tracker 1436 Jon boat.
Thanks.

If I ran one of those on my lake my neighbors would lynch me.:laughing:
SilverZuk 08-12-2009, 10:28 AM What year Johnson Motor went teets up?
Rat~Man 08-12-2009, 10:43 AM My broinlaw has a 9.9 short shaft 4 stroke Yamaha, low hours for around a grand, thing runs perfect and looks brand new.
COVEJEEPSXJ 08-12-2009, 11:35 AM I am looking for a 9.9 or 15 HP outboard also. I am only looking in the < $600 range though.

and that is a problem.....?
I have 9.9 merc, circa 2000 and wouldn't buy another. It's heavier than the Yamaha and I've had several issues with the tilt bracket at over $300 a pop :(
I think the merc 9.9 and 15 are the same other than the carb assembly. I'm going to swap mine for a 8hp Yamaha since 9.9 is a bit much for a kicker motor on my boat and the 8hp Yamaha is a bunch lighter (85 vs 130 pounds ).
Blue Chip 08-12-2009, 12:23 PM Have an 09 Merc 4 stroke.
Nice motor, quiet and reliable so far... barely 25 hours on it though.
SilverZuk 08-12-2009, 12:30 PM If you do not have to have a 4 stroke, I recommend a 1974 to 1990 (I think) Johnson/Evinrude 9.9 or 15. Both 9.9 and 15 are the same with different carbs.
They are probably the most common small motor out there. That means parts and knowledge are readily available. They are equivalent of the small block chevy of the small boat motor world.
Shawnboy 08-12-2009, 05:27 PM What year Johnson Motor went teets up?
Mid seventies. We picked it up in 2000 for $500.00 so it didn't owe us anything.
I ended up grabbing the Merc from Bass Pro. Since it has a 5 year warranty I won't be too worried about tilt brackets.
I have never owned anything brand new with a motor before so even tho' this is small potatos I'm still pretty stoked to get out fishing with it.
and that is a problem.....?:flipoff2:
SilverZuk 08-13-2009, 05:25 AM You can sell your old motor on e-bay. They usually have a number of bidders.

Pretty sure the block or the head is cracked. You think someone would still want it?
What would you suggest a fair price would be or just let the market decide.
As an aside, I really am looking forward to getting the new Merc out for a run.
craigslist
with a cracked block I would happy if somebody took it off my hands for free so I didn't have to deal with it.
but somebody might give you $50 if it has parts they need.
A tip top merc 9.9 used goes for around 600 to 800 hundo around here

Same price here. I just wanted something new for a change. I bought a new Tracker 1436 Jon boat last year and the new 9.9 yesterday. I might just keep the old motor and see if I can't fix it on the cheap and have it for a spare.
I am hoping to be modding out the boat over the winter. The new motor has an alternator option as an add on. So, I was thinking lighting, livewell, sonar, trolling motor, tunes, plug in for a beverage chiller:laughing:. A front casting deck would be nice along with some storage. I want a little bit of luxury and still be able to toss a deer carcass in the front and not have to worry about it.
There are a few great websites with Jon boat build ideas. If I do mine I'll post a build thread.
SilverZuk 08-14-2009, 06:03 AM Check e-bay.
I'd pay $100 just to have a spare lower unit and coil on hand.
The prop is worth between $25 and $50 depending on condition.
The lower unit is worth about $100-150.
The coil, mag, and electronic ignition is worth $50-$150.
If you have the extension that makes it from a short shaft to long shaft, it is worth about $75 (extension, d-shaft, shifter linkage extension, and extended water tube).
Being toward the end of the summer, I am sure parts are cooling for boat motots. About April/May is peak time that people are pulling them out and working on them.
Here is a lower unit (no bids) starting at $110. I saw one sell for around $170 earlier this year. Though I thought that was a touch high.

If I was close, I would gladly come over and give you $50 for it. Just to throw in the building for parts.

Yeah, Huntsville Ontario is a ways away from West Virginia but if you are ever up this way you have a place to crash and go bass fishing or chicken hunting.
Like I mentioned to Camo, I think I'll just keep it and tear it down and try to fix it on the cheap for a spare.
I had the new Merc out this weekend. It sure was nice having something around that started on the first pull. haha...that's what the missus said too.
Shawnboy 08-17-2009, 10:12 AM Here are a couple of pics.
SilverZuk 08-17-2009, 10:17 AM I'd love to go chicken hunting. I've fished in the Bancroft area, and on both sides of Algonquin. Fishing was good, but I was amazed at the number of grouse and partridges we saw. (I assume they were partridges, they weren't grouse, slightly smaller, and more of tan/gray).
What area do you live in?
Shawnboy 08-17-2009, 10:32 AM We are about 50 miles northeast of Huntsville near Kearney. We are definately in the bush. Algonquin is about 10 miles away.
No partridge here tho'. Sharpies, ruffed and spruce grouse by the bushel. We call them stupid birds up here. Christ you can hit them with the atv and my old springer can still catch them without firing a shot.
We are on a lake trout lake with lots of smallies. The lakers are nearly impossible to catch in the summer tho'. They like to hang down around in 85-90 feet of water. A lot easier in the winter if you don't mind the cold.
SilverZuk 08-17-2009, 11:43 AM I liked the Huntsville area. We fished Lake Charolette (sp?), and some of others that I can't remember the names of each trip there. Both trips up we stayed in an old logging camp on the York River. Fishing wasn't very good on the river when were there. We did good on some nearby lakes though.
If I ever find my maps, I'll give you the names of some that we fished and what we caught.
I'll have to google a spruce grouse and sharpy to see which we saw.
Edit: it definitely wasn't spruce. They looked like sharp tailed grouse.
Shawnboy 08-17-2009, 12:36 PM Probably ruffed grouse more than anything. Sharpies are fewer in numbers and a lot more cautious. Ruffies are real stupid. Cockbirds like to stand in the middle of the road and challange you.
SilverZuk 08-17-2009, 12:42 PM I know ruffed grouse. We have them here.
In the spring they are absolutely stupid strutting around in the road, or on a log.
We saw several similar birds that were not ruffed grouse. We figured it was partridge because they resembled chukars.

We call them stupid chickens or bush chicken, good eating anyway :grinpimp:
The only way to catch lakers in the summer is downriggers, like 75'-150'. I don't even bother, too much work :)
Shawnboy 08-17-2009, 01:05 PM Probably Hungarian Partridge. Did they look like this?
Hey Norm. A mess of stoopid birds and a pan full of pickerel can't be beat on a cool October evening.
SilverZuk 08-17-2009, 01:18 PM Hungarian Partridge looks like what we saw.
I've always called ruffed grouse "brush chickens", though most local call them "native pheasant".
I have never seen a lake trout. They are rare in WV, and we only fished Canada in July and had no luck the few times we tried to go out for trout. I saw some people troling for them, but never saw anyone catch one.
I did find a lake north of Bancroft called Trout Lake (one of many by that name), you can catch as many perch as you ever cared to clean. The water is crystal clear and it is a small lake though over 120' deep in the middle. You can drop a jig down in about 20' of water and see literally a swarm of perch and some rock bass go after it.
We went there our first days to catch a bucket of perch for a fish fry, then we started fishing other lakes/rivers. We caught some monster rock bass (IIRC one 10" and one almost 12") on the York River small mouth fishing. I love that country up there. There is only one natural lake, and relatively few man made lakes in WV.
Charolette Lake (sp?) hold some large small mouth. We fished several days trying to catch one we had seen on two of the days there. He looked like a torpedo. We caught some big ones, but nothing like that one we saw.
SilverZuk 08-17-2009, 01:24 PM The spot on the map where we stayed is called "Boulter".
Edit: Fraser Lake was a nice lake a few minutes away where we caught about everything. Nice pickerel (walleye, bass, pike, etc.)
I had a mess of Huns around the house until last fall when the Foxes moved in, they are pretty stupid birds and probably a easy meal. The Huns used to chase each other other around under the base of a pine tree outside my office window, picture 7-8 birds running around the tree in circle, provided some office entertainment anyway . Unless raised in captivity the survival rate is pretty poor, Turkeys and Pheasant's tend to do a little better around here.
COVEJEEPSXJ 08-17-2009, 05:18 PM I picked up 3 Evinrudes tonight.
71 9.5 hp
76 15 hp
87 15 hp
According to the seller the 9.5 runs but needs tuned up, and both 15 hp's need fuel pumps.
I know zip zero nada about outboards so I have no idea where to start with the diagnosis. Any ideas? Tips? Websites?
Shawnboy 08-17-2009, 05:23 PM I am familiar with the area. I have done a few bow hunts up around Bancroft but since we got the Kearney property we don't go outside the area much any more. I did a fly in a few years ago in that neck of the woods. I'll have to check and see which lake we were at. We were supposed to have the lake to ourselves. Imagine my surprise to run into a funny old man in a canoe bass fishing.
Huns are scarce around here. Most of thier habitat is very close to the GTA (Greater Toronto Area) and with a overall population of over 6 million people you can imagine the hunting pressure. Now back home in Saskatchewan, they are plentiful but so wary that you can pretty much only hunt them with pointers. If you run flushers, they're gone by the time you get there. All you're left with is a confused dog with a WTF look on his face.
SilverZuk 08-18-2009, 10:16 AM IIRC The parts for the '76 and '87 models should be interchangeable.
I know the big parts are.
The fuel pump is mounted under the housing and easy to replace.
