My buddy Lio Hebert sent me this, and since I'm not on the big list anymore, I tought I'd ask here :

Dit Denis, si t'es encore inscrit a TLCML, tu peux poster ça en aprlant seulement de "60series frame"...et en mettant mon adresse??

Merci pour Xav

Lio

Hello all,

During my mountain expedition this summer, the friend who was cruising
with me rolled his 60series. Nothing real bad as he landed on his wheels
and nothing mechanical was damaged .... but the body is shot. He has
already found a new body in mint condition and we are preparing his
truck for "The Swap".
QUESTION: While the frame will be bodyless, is there any modification
that could be made to improve it?
We have planned to clean the frame (brush) and to paint it with
rust-proof paint, but while we're there, is there anything to strengthen
for example?
What about blocking all the openings to keep mud and large debris from
accumulating inside the rails? I hate to see these large "windows" on
the side while the drain holes are so small!

Thanks for your input!

Lio
PS: This cruiser is used for expeditions and mild trail-rides and not
rock-

I dunno if I would plate all of the holes - but I would be sorely tempted to hot dip galvanize the frame! Especially for a Euro rig!

YES!

Weld the spring hangers on, especially the ones for the rear springs! I've seen a lot of them (including my own) loosen and even detach (with disastrous consequences) from the frame, they're only cold-riveted on there. Add some welds, make sure they stay put.

I would also check the crossmembers, they tend to weaken at the point where they meet the frame rails, especially if there is rust involved.

What do you think about completely closing the frame so that dirt and water doesn't go in... But if it goes anyway, it'll stay in forever, which could be bad... They're thinking about it, and I'm not too sure whether it'd be good or bad...

Andy & Henry, Thanks for the Input

Cheers,

Denis:

I dont like closing in the frame. The frame actually comprises two "C" channels that are riveted together - even if you managed too weld all the holes shut/watertight, water could still seep in through the frame joints. Trapped moisture is the worst thing - its gonna rot out! Bummer! If galvanizing is not an option, I would treat the frame to a thorough cleaning and paint with a zinc based primer and some good tough frame paint (epoxy-based stuff). As far as the frame reinforcement goes, follow Henry's (aka idiotic venazuelan bozo) advice - sounds good to me!
