: some recent .308's
300sniper 08-15-2009, 03:03 PM i finally got to see a couple assembled .308's that i chambered a while back. i did the barrel work (chamber, crown, muzzle brake) and the owners assembled them.
both used rock creek 30 cal, 11.25 twist barrels. the one with the blasted stainless finished barrel is 24.5" length and uses a surefire muzzle brake/suppressor adapter. the black one is 22" and has a badger thruster brake and was finished in flat black moly resin. they were both chambered with the same custom reamer but one guy shoots the 155 lupua scenar bullets and the other 175 sierra smk's. both are using lapua brass. both seem to shoot very well.

Nice work.
i should have a .308 of my own in a month or two depending on when the action is ready. mine is going to be cooler and more tactical than the rest though with a folding stock and 18.5" barrel:D
aloharover 08-15-2009, 04:15 PM Damn sexy.
I really like the green one. is that an AICS stock? What scope?
I spent my day building AKs. Got 2 krinks, 3 yugos, a Romi, a 5.45 franken rifle, all demilled, receivers rivetted and sand blasted. Finished all the metal work on an S12 and an S308 conversion.
Still a lot more to do on them, but glad I finally had some time to work on them.

aics 1.5 and i believe he is running a nightforce 3.5-15 but not sure what reticle.
NVScouter 08-18-2009, 01:33 PM Damn sexy. I have resisted the urge for years to get a tactical setup and everytime I see this shit my resolve falters :flipoff2:
Texas97 08-19-2009, 09:07 AM whats the thought process behind the two different barrel lengths? any ryhme or reason or is that just what those people brought to you to...
i think that 22" barrel looks to be about a good compromise in length....
Jeff. 08-19-2009, 09:15 AM That green one is sexay! Wow.

in my opinion, a 22" barreled .308 is a great length for all around use. there is enough length to make it to 1k still sonic and it is short enough to move around with. the .308 i am building for myself will be used almost exclusively at 500 meters and in so i am going with an 18.5" barrel. i want it to be very easy to move with and a bit easier to shoot offhand. it should still make it to 1k sonic in good conditions. i think both those barrel blanks were just over 26" but different contours. the owner of each of those rifles decided the length so that is what they got.

i have to agree. the black metal on an od stock is my favorite combo now.

nice work!
TheAlmightySam 08-19-2009, 06:13 PM I'm going to have to jump on the green-rifle-humping bandwagon here. The way the muzzle break is flush with the diameter of the barrel is really, really nice. Makes it look like it was hewn out of one piece, and gives the whole rifle a really solid look.

that brake would look seamless if the barrel was wiped down with a rag or something. it looks like solvent or oil is seeping out of the seam in that picture. this is what it looked like when it came out of the oven after being sprayed with moly resin.

Lil Uzi 08-19-2009, 08:31 PM Nice work. That kinda stuff amazes me. Great explanation on the barrel length re: velocity down range. Other than Durrrrrr, why F with the muzzle breaks ??
300sniper 08-19-2009, 09:15 PM why F with the muzzle breaks ??
faster follow up shots is the main reason.
NVScouter 08-19-2009, 10:04 PM Any recomendations on twist for a .308 shooting 125-168s for a 20" barrel? I'm playing with the math and counting money I dont have :shaking:
4runner 08-19-2009, 10:11 PM go check the shootout thread for a couple photos of my Rem 5r that several folks shot at teh gong at 650 yds with several HITS.
308 and AICS 1.5 stock...Millett LRS-1 on top, lots of other goodies...

a 1:11.25 would probably be a good choice. that will stabilize just about anything up to a 190 grain bullet.

Are you using a pizza oven?
300sniper 08-20-2009, 04:17 PM Are you using a pizza oven?
if you consider cooking tombstone frozen pizzas in my kitchen oven a pizza oven, then sure:D
i have an all metal gun cabinet that i bought from wallmart years ago that i am going to convert to a curing oven one if these days. a 27" barrel only barely fits in my kitchen oven at an angle. it would be easier with a tall oven that i can hang the barreled action vertically.

How does the pizza taste after cooking a barrel in it?
TheRedHorseman 08-20-2009, 06:34 PM Just fine.
But that smell....
....smells like VICTORY!
