: Howe PS experience
Lloyd 09-16-2002, 12:32 PM After reading post after post after post about people having problems with AGR, and Camo's solid recommendation of Howe, I finally got around to ordering. He had to build the 6 gpm pump, but it shipped within a couple of days. Everything was there, all as ordered. Made brackets, had hoses made and bolted it all together. Bled the system, fired it up and got the residual air out, and everything works perfectly. Flogged the living shit out of it yesterday, and on a whim stopped, opened the hood, and stuck my finger into the fluid reservoir - fluid cooler than my body temp. This was while working the steering hard in rocks. Of course I did put a cooler in the system, but was still expecting maybe 200F oil - not even warm! And I can put a tire up against a big rock and move my +6000 lb. pig sideways with one finger (either it or the rock).
Just wanted to put in a good word, because they sure did a fine job for me.
YELLER BLAZER 09-16-2002, 01:11 PM Howe does build some nice stuff, sometimes service is a slow but craftsmanship is top notch.
Dan Dibble 09-16-2002, 01:18 PM I have had good luck with Jeff Howe. Great equipment.
Dan
would i lie to you? :D Jeff is the real deal.
Lloyd 09-16-2002, 02:52 PM Thanks again, Camo. It's really a pleasure to do business with someone who knows their shit extremely well and puts out first-class work.
FULLSIZE 09-16-2002, 04:39 PM got any pics of your set-up?:D
Scoutaholic 09-16-2002, 05:01 PM Been running my Howe setup for a couple years now and not so much as a burp. Works perfect.:D
4x4extreme 09-16-2002, 05:25 PM could you give me a link to the site
Depdog 09-17-2002, 06:50 AM Yeah ditto, do they have a web site or can you give contact info. A web search only comes up with people who sell their stuff.
Thanks
Depdog
Lloyd 09-17-2002, 07:14 AM No web site. Howe Performance Steering is at (619) 561-7764; if you find the Howe Racing site it's a different company that sells stock car stuff.
No pics yet, spent all my time and energy making it go (and then testing it :D). I'll try to get some this evening. Local shop only had two kinds of hose suitable for this; the regular Weatherhead steel braid high-pressure hydraulic stuff, and the polyester braid dedicated PS hose which was only available in 3/8". All the lines are the high pressure hose (4400 psi ) 3/8" with AN-6 from the pump to the box, 1/2" AN-8 from the box to the cooler and cooler to the filter/reservoir, and 3/4" AN-10 from the reservoir to the pump. This last one is too damn stiff (it's about 1.5" OD) and has bent the pump can a little where the fitting is attached. I'll need to replace that hose with something that bends a little easier before it breaks the damn thing.
Since I was converting from manual steering and there are very few Dodge parts in this state, I used a couple of brackets for a Chevy pump and fabricated my own mount. It hangs low on the driver's side, and uses two 15370 belts off the (previously unused) two front grooves in the crank pulley. Now that I've done that, the only way to run my York is off the front notch in the 2-groove water pump pulley I swapped on. Reservoir is attached to the left front radiator support and the cap is about the same level as the radiator cap. Cooler is a stacked-plate unit about 7"x10" from a 1-ton GM truck AT, there's another one just like it on there for the 727. It may be a bit of overkill for the PS system, but probably not if I put a Milemarker on it.
FULLSIZE, if you'd like I can give you numbers for better hose lengths than I used. I had the hoses made before the pump was mounted, so all of 'em are a little long.

Everything that Howe does is set up for a remote reservoir. The one they sent me has a spin-on filter on the bottom, and holds about a quart and a half. Looks like spun aluminum, with beautiful TIG welds; AN-8 in and -10 out. About $150. Theory is that with the large reservoir mounted above the pump, and large diameter hose to gravity-feed it, the pump can't starve for oil and will last longer, work better, etc. Compare to a stock system with small line and a small reservoir on the pump; if something in your system suddenly demands a lot of juice, the pump can (and does) run dry, cavitate, etc because it can pump oil out faster than it's returned; stock pump setup is fine for the stock box, but when you go adding other things and higher volume demand to the system it just doesn't have the capacity or return rate to keep the pump wet.

Glad it was useful. :)

Lloyd 09-17-2002, 12:04 PM Good to know that there's a place on the web were people can see his stuff. Thanks!
