: 4x4 beach camping near bay area?
snot rocket 08-17-2009, 02:47 PM Are there any beaches you can drive your truck on or camp on any where close to Santa Cruz or half moon bay? The only one I know of is pismo beach but that's a lil far away from me here in Newark and it's always crowded.
Yota Up 08-17-2009, 05:20 PM Either Pismo or 5 hours of a drive north. Pismo is the closest place for you for sure.
Personally, I'd rather drive the 5 hours north and go there instead. Less people, more scenery.
If you don't need to be ON the beach, there are places you can camp in your truck on a hill above the ocean and still see and hear the ocean. This area is west of Fort Hunter Ligget. If you're interested post back and I'll tell you more. It's in the vicinity of San Lucia and Gorda, south of Big Sur.

I grew up there, and nope, all state Beaches now, closed at Sunset.
Half Moon Bay has a State Beach with Camping http://www.parks.ca.gov/default.asp?page_id=531
Manresa still has camping: http://www.parks.ca.gov/default.asp?page_id=545
New Brighton (south of Capitola): http://www.parks.ca.gov/default.asp?page_id=542
I am not finding Dillons Beach, I think it's private.
There is one in Davenport, look for the cars and the Red, White and Blue mail box on Highway 1 just before you get into town......(nudie beach)
W8ng4msrgt 08-18-2009, 12:23 AM I think you can camp on the beach in La Selva Beach. I am not sure about driving on the beach though. My cousin lives there so I don't recall if it is only for residents or not.
Prewitt Ridge which sounds like what Yota Up is talking about is pretty cool. I have some pictures from a trip I took there.
In about the time it will take you to get to Pismo you can go to USAL Beach. Less people, more scenery and wildlife.

snot rocket 08-18-2009, 01:24 PM it all depends how close you are to the beach it self, how good the wheeling is, and how crowded the actual place is. id gladly go a lil further if the conditions are better

Yup, that's it. Bring mosquito spray, because never in my life have I experienced more biters than there. And this coming from a guy that travels the US renting 4x4s and exploring(FL, AL, GA, LA, TX, KS, MI, ID, OR, etc).
And I think the spots that Bebe is talking about are also the type where though you may put up a tent on the beach, you'd have to park the truck away.
Very rare find to have a beach where you can actually drive on it, park your truck, sleep in it, all while waves crash against your tires. Not much "free america" left out there...

If you are looking for "wheeling" than Pismo is going to be it. You can drive on Usal Beach, but there is an enforced speed limit (10 mph) and it's small. Or go to Oregon and hit the dunes. I hear they make Pismo look like a parking lot.

It is private property and the owner shut down the business.

I never knew that place was open for camping. We used to walk on the road next to the property and then up north to surf this fun little right

After driving on Usal Beach today I was pulled over and informed by the State Ranger that driving is no longer allowed on the beach. I commented that there is no sign posted from the Briceland/Whitethorn side of the road and the beach stating this. He agreed and said there was a sign on the Hwy 1 side of the road and let me off with a warning. It appears the area has been designated a California State Park Wilderness area so driving on the beach is now prohibited. I was not in tune to the General Plan and EIR preparation and comment period in 2006 (away at college) and the environmentalists won. http://134.186.31.135/?page_id=22578

Booger Weldz 10-02-2009, 08:35 AM fortuna(above humbolt) i dont know if you can camp, but you can drive on the beach...i camped in the redwoods one year with my kids and we headed up there and found a dead whale on the beach..interesting for the kids for sure
dgfordman 10-02-2009, 09:42 AM That sux to hear about usal beach. i always loved goin there when fort bragg was boring or fogged in. you can walk on the beach just not drive on it right? stinkin enviro nuts:mad3:
RockMolester 10-02-2009, 03:03 PM You can still drive at Samoa Dunes and Clam Beach outside of Eureka/Arcata, but that's about as long of a drive from the Bay Area as Pismo. You can't camp at Samoa Dunes, but we always used to camp on Clam Beach. They probably don't allow that anymore, though, seeing as how Humboldt County is even more liberal than the Bay Area. :shaking:
Slowly but surely, the selfish "environmentalists" are getting all public lands closed down to everyone but themselves, while we TRUE environmentalists are stereotyped and locked out of the public land our tax dollars pay to preserve for all of the public. Enjoy and preserve our multi-use areas while you can, because there are so few left, and they won't be around much longer. :mad3:
The next time I'm in Humboldt, I'll make sure to clean up all the hippies' garbage so we responsible recreationists don't get blamed.
