Ok so I have been kicking a custom front axle idea around for a little while and I would like to get some opinions on it. Heres what I am thinking...
A hybrid 9"/60 I am thinking of cutting the tubes out of of the 9" and retubing for a pass side diff with maybe a highpinion to help the front angle, I was then thinking of using dana 60 outers with 35 spline shafts all the way through. It seems like it would be a fairly easy idea assuming that the tube size on the 9" and 60 are the same. I am now wondering why I havn't really seen any of these and why it wouldn't popular?

currie makes these. why not just a 60 though. I don't think you save a lot of weight using the 9 in center I think the weight savings come from the thinner wall tube used to build the hybrid axle. with a 60 you can probably have at least one axle that is a standard spicer part. With the hybrid you need all custom inner axles because the 9 in 35 spline and 60 35 spline are different pressure angles. There are a whole bunch of other issues. inner axle seals etc. just doesn't seem like a good bang for the buck modification.

I've seen several frontends like that, I think it is a good setup.

Some thing like this-9" center, DT. locker 35 spline all the way to the looking hub,1410 "U'' joint with 35 spline input on pinoin- I did it back in '98. steve differential eng. inc.

Tom at sunray seems to be the master at this setup

I love mine...hell of an axle. Clearance is the same thougfh now that I shaved my rear D60.

Check this link out www.sunrayengineering.com and read the "Why a 9" section.

yeah but why?

OH for the stronger pinion right?

I ain't saying currie is better than steve...but notice they are running 60's in fire ant now.....

I ain't impressed with a normal 9"
maybe if you spend 10g and use desert racing tricks...

quit cutting up those 60's
hehe

I'd bet that's more of a political decision on Currie's part.
the trademark HP9 chunks can't handle the big tires, so they can't just put in a low pinion 9, it'd be bad for buisness. a Dana 60 si a nice way to sidestep the issue.

WRONG. They are the same.
