I did quite a bit of searching last night and did not get a definitive answer. Is there a difference between a metric inverted flare (double flare) and a standard double flare.

I plumbed my cruiser brake lines along time ago using premade pieces from the auto parts store but used standard fittings with adapters. I bought a cheapo flare tool and successfully did a buddys jeep so while I have the cruiser apart Id like to fix up the brake lines to be the correct length and eliminate the adapters and I hope to buy some pre-made metric lines, cut to length and re-flare the one side and the hope is that metric and standard double flares are the same.

Yes, they are different. The metric flare is called an ISO "bubble" flare and is formed differently than your standard 45 degree double flare.

Google ISO bubble flare for more info. Flaring kits are available to do the bubble flare. Stay away from the el cheapo kits though, the only thing they will produce is frustration.

When I did mine I just bought metric lines and then re-flared the ends that needed standard fittings. They were just a hair loose on the metric line, but I never had any problems with leaks.

Not sure what's considered a "cheapo" kit, but I have an OTC bubble flare kit that seems to work well. It was <$25 at Summit Racing.

Toyota uses a standard inverted double flare on 3/16" line. The tube fittings are the only difference- 10mm threads vs. 3/8".

So yes, the tool you used for your buddy's jeep will also work for your cruiser.

Yup, just 'cause it's a metric brake fitting does not make it a bubble flare. 45* is 45* is 45* if it's double flare, you can use the same tool. Your SAE sized clamping bar might not grip the tube quite as well, but IIRC most Toyota lines are the same or very close to 3/16" lines.
