Thanks again guys for all your help. I.O.U. big.

story....

we rolled into the spillway friday night around 9pm. We fond our way to the bowl and camped there. The whole time my lockright (lock wrong) was making clicks and pops louder and more often than ever before  A couple times under hard load it would ratchet a full revolution then,...BANG!!!!. I figured fuck it!.
We made it to soup bowl, wich I was dying to try with my new drivetrain. It fricken WALKED IT. I was stoked!, but in the process my lockright let off some evil bangs, clicks, clanks and pops.
The rig kept going so I figured "screw it!" I was almost at the box. like a 150 yards, I was tellin mysef, "the boxes ass is mine" :D and my passenger said,.."dude","look at you shifters"
My 2wd/4wd shifter was flipen around all crazy  CRAP!
we pulled into the next camp site and sure enough. the front cone blew straight out the front of the tranfer case. It busted all the ears off the cone and put a 5 inch crack up the front of the case.
After a little bit of head scatching, a few choice words and a couple beers and a nap. I had a plan. I rotated the cone slightly and re-installed the bolts with washers to hold the cone in place. I knew I wouldnt be able to use front wheel drive but I needed the cont to retain the bearing for the rear out put shaft. I worked!
I got it all back togeather, planing on driving out the next day in 2wd. So we crashed early. The next morning we loaded up camp and set out. I made about 100feet and the lock right made one final BANG/CRUNCH! I was dead in the water!
Bill (bk cruiser) and Luis wheeled out to find a phone and parts around 11am Sun morn. I pulled the case off and did all the work I could do with out parts and waited patiently. All the other trucks up there where gone by 5pm sun night. I had the spider lake area all to myself. It was actually really cool. I have never seen or heard it so calm.
At about 10pm we had parts. Bill had wheeled the parts in in his 55 but there wasnt enough room in the wagon for the rest of the crew (who came up in a van) so Len (69cruzer), Luis, Jeremy and lens kid actually hiked in from loon to the box! NUTS!!
we got the POS back together in about an hour or so. loaded up camp and was on the trail by 11:30pm. about half way back to loon we had a little alt problem on Bills rig so we did a battery swap and we where on our way. We where back at loon by 1:30am. I thanked the fellow rock dogs that came down and the split in their nice warm heated minivan. Bill and I who had to drive on 13lbs (my york also took a shit) left soon after. My passenger and I where freeezing our asses off all the way home. I started to wonder if cutting the top off was a bad Idea. I guess putting my fist through the wind shield when the locker broke probly didnt help either. We aired up in Pollock pines and with a couple coffee stops to stay awake, made it home by 5:15am. But hell, we made it home!
Once again, Thanks guys for all your help, time and parts. I really, really appreciate it! Its good to know you have friends you can count on, and you guys are true friends. I.O.U 1

O-YA,..

Take your lock right out of your rig and throw it far away. Dont give it to your friend (thats not nice) throw it far! in a body of water! where it can do no harm!

Do it before it strands you!

Great story! Some people love Lock wrongs, some people hate 'em. I fall in the later category. Ian had one in the rear of his rig for a couple of seasons and the whole time it banged and clattered - it was unloading at the worst of times:eek: they dont fill you with confidence:mad: I guess the trick is to make sure the side pre-load (?) shims are within specs (not easy for a moron like me) and your tire pressures are equal (at least on the street). So far the welded diff has worked way better (and cheaper!)

Cheers,

Andy

Yikes sounds like quite a night. I am still floored by how willing our community of four wheelers is to help someone in need. People spend countless ours getting their rigs ready for a run yet only to drop it all with NO reservations to help someone else out on the trail. It is just plain cool. Hats off to FC187’s crew for going the extra distance.

believe it or not Andy, I had that lock right in that axle for about 8 years with out a hitch until this year. I gues the V8 and double cases was the straw that broke the camels back. I actually point the blame of the t-case failing to the locker banging around like that. All the ears on the front cone blew off. The cone wasnt pealed off as if it where hit. Judging by the shape of the ears left on the case the thing blew straight out the front!
The front cone is also the front bearing carier for the rear out put shaft. My theory is the locker sliping under power and suddenly engaging with a BANG!!! was laterally driving the helical cut gears forward eventually blowing off the cone/bearing carier. the crack on the front of the case was about 6" long and one edge was about 1mm higher than the other (outward force)

I will probably leave the new 73 case in there and install my case saver along with a Idea I have to reinforce that cone. I am sure a much smother lincoln in the rear add life to that t-case.

I had about 12 hours this weekend (waiting for parts) with nothing better to do than think about options. I considered taking off the cruiser case and puting my 205 behind that 203 and puting a 14 in the rear and trying to swing a 60 for the front, but after I added all that up in my head  FT!

I think my only option at this point is ditch the lockwrong, weld it up, beef up the case a little more and run it!

Eventually if I ever find a deal on a 60 front,I will go 1 ton and a 205 behind my 203. but for now,...Its all good  :fj:

Don:

Keep an eye out for a "cab and chassis" 14 bolt rear (63" wide) - Ian paid $200 for his. Then put in the 205. Then save up for the D60 front. The down side is running 6 lug in the front and 8 in the rear (two spares:( ?) Or putting Lincoln ends/RDB's on the 14 bolt. You could even do the 14 bolt rear and run a "slanted" rear driveshaft (I know OrangeFJ45 is not a fan of that), but with your wheelbase it should be a doddle (Brit word for piece of cake). Sorry to say I am not a fan of the Cruiser case in doubler applications and on heavy rigs - maybe the locker does not help either.

Ya darn right! They should be able to stand up to hard wheeling for at least 9 years. I'll help you recycle that POS so that it doesn't ruin anything else. I'm in Sacratomato next month, so when can I come by and pick it up and safely dispose of it? :D

I know. I actually have "longfields" in it. They seemed to work pretty good this weekend. With the rear locker poping and banging the way it was I had the ARB in the front on allmost all the time.

my junk is good enough for now I guess. But eventually,...:D
