: D60 Carrier bearings

So I pulled the carrier and pinion out, and the bearings look OK but the races look fawked...

As I pondered my situation, I thought about the use of 'Setup bearings', and how it is no different than replacing the existing bearings. I have no plans on replacing the gears, so why can't I just replace the bearings/bad races with new bearings.

It seems too easy, and that is the first sign I have missed something, so please let me know what is wrong with this idea.

TIA,

Eric

I don't think I fully understand what you are asking. The setup bearings threw me off.

But, if the carrier bearing races need replacing, replace the bearing AND the race together.

Yes, That is what I meant - bearings and races.

The point about the setup bearings is that we use setup bearing sets to check for tolerances, then replace them with the permanent bearing sets, and assume the tolerances will be the same. So how is replacing old worn out bearing sets with new bearing sets any different, and if it is different, why?

Thanks for showing me the need to clarify my post.

Eric

I dunno - even when the races are bad in my muffler bearings, I replace both the race and the bearing. Yes, that's sarcasm. But anyway, if you put new bearings in a bad race, the bearings will fail prematurely since they have to 'wear' themselves into the shitty race.

Ok, I think I understand now.

I think you are concerned about the bearing preload. Setup bearings just help get you in the ballpark when adjusting your shims.

BUT, you should already have the shim count correct with your old bearings so you shouldn't need to use the setups again. Just install new bearings and races, check backlash and contact pattern, then run it.
