Well Ill start from the Beginning as it didn't end up were its at over night. more like over the coarse of three years and countless hours of venting with a hammer... But I have some work to do so ill give you stage one and two that lead to its current state of trauma...
Stage One
http://i681.photobucket.com/albums/vv175/MNtal/n302100247_18399_8315.jpg
Daily driven High school truck. Bought it Bone stock 6.2 Diesel, 700r4, np208, 10 bolts front and rear. kicked the running boards 4 inch lift 35inch BFG's All Terrains on Mickey Thompson classic II's ooh Shiny. :D
http://i681.photobucket.com/albums/vv175/MNtal/n302100247_18400_8779.jpg
The truck Every stupid High school punk wanted built in my parents 2 car garage... look at that cherry sheet metal...:shaking: (what the hell did I Do???) ha ha ha…
I Was climbing a dirt wall at a party one night and managed to blow the spider gears out of the front and the rear at the same time the pieces somehow jammed enough in the rear that I was able to drive it back to the shop I was working at without the c clips falling out of the rear.
http://i681.photobucket.com/albums/vv175/MNtal/n302100247_18402_9756.jpg
About that time I found ColoradoK5. Com and was convinced I need to upgrade to 14bolt rear Detroit 4.10’s and a Dana 44 front fulltime pucks with high steer. So not having much money I did all the work myself dumb 19 year old kid after hours at the shop. I drilled and tapped the passenger steering knuckle my first time ever using a mill. And made my drag link and tie rod from 1.25 Dia .281 wall DOM tube and used ¾ heims at both ends. I learned how to weld and built my own heavy ass bumpers front and rear using 6’’ channel.
http://i681.photobucket.com/albums/vv175/MNtal/n302100247_18403_187.jpg
I then barrowed a set 38x12.5r15’s TSl super swamper tires from the shop owner off his old trail rig. With three tubes they all held air so I mounted them to a set of 15x10 black 8 lug rock crawler rims and finally gave in to the way of the Sawzall.

I left off when I got my 60 and the shit hit the Fan. :shaking:

http://i681.photobucket.com/albums/vv175/MNtal/n302100247_18415_7835.jpg

I pulled the rear springs and installed some 56” eye to eye 4” rear lift springs that I had. The rear spring hanger’s were swapped for some Ord Shackle flip brackets and were then moved back 4 inches to accommodate the longer springs and shackle’s.

http://i681.photobucket.com/albums/vv175/MNtal/n302100247_18418_9334.jpg

I didn’t really like the wheel base so once again I moved the rear hangers back another 4 inches for a total of 8” rear stretch. For those of you that enjoy removing rivets Air hammering with a chisel tip has proven the quickest way for me to remove Chevy frame rivets. ( Joy... :shaking:)

The revolver style shackles That I built using Chevy rear spring bushings 1 ¾ .120 wall tubing for sleeves and 1.5 .375wall tube for dog bone and shackle spreader. The shackle plates are 1.5x.375 steel. 11” open 6” closed.:shaking:

For those of you wondering Yes I know revolver’s suck, yes I know they create axle wrap problems, and yes they did beat the crap out of my rear springs, and since they didn’t pivot in the middle like a true revolver they bound and honestly don’t work that well. (so they are getting the boot I just wanted to try them to see) so… :flipoff2:

At this time I also had collected enough parts to do a Rear disk break conversion. :smokin: I ended up using ¾ ton brake parts and caliper brackets mounted in reverse and welded to the axle brake flanges. Not my greatest Fab work ever but they work good and I was still learning at that point so ill just chalk it up to a learning experience.

Next time I will probably buy some brackets .Ah who the hell am I kidding… I will think about it and then break out the cardboard and calculator and make my own no offense to the shops out there making them I’m not doing this to make money. I’m doing it for an excuse to hit things with a BFH…:flipoff2:

http://i681.photobucket.com/albums/vv175/MNtal/n302100247_18421_504.jpg

At the same time the Rear 4” 52’s made their way to the front with some 7.5” shackles and the frame bushing got moved forward with the front hangers for a total of 5” forward from stock making the wheelbase 117”.

This all took place during the first Year of my Tool And Die Program, going to school fulltime and working at night fulltime. every spare second/ and dollar I spent working on my truck.

Even when I was at school I worked on my truck. Since I’m out of Pic’s on this flash drive Here is a few teaser Pics of what I Took on next.

So while I was up North. The front Drive shaft pulled apart on me 3 Times. I need something like 9" of travel total, 3" compression and 6" extension from static (Ride Height) to Keep the driveshaft together. So I sourced this New Bling for the front Driveshaft slip. we've been Buiding driveshafts with these for about 5 years now. 18" of travel with a constant
4" engagement, 10 spline 1.625 Dia. :smokin:

http://i681.photobucket.com/albums/vv175/MNtal/IMG_7510.jpg

http://i681.photobucket.com/albums/vv175/MNtal/IMG_7508.jpg

I'm Currently using chains to keep the slip from spreading to far when at full droop.:flipoff2:

So I've got a new 1350 weld yoke for my rear driveshaft, and I have plenty of spare Joints, so that’s no big thing. but that brings me to my Dilemma Keep in mind I am going Wheeling Friday maybe Saturday morning latest.

I spoke with Jess at High angle driveline on the Phone and he told me Oem yoke's are junk and that he wouldn't use one if I beat him with it...:D haha can't say as I would blame him, Seeing the fullsize Rig they've got at the shop. can you say big block.:smokin:
Jess was real helpful and a hell of a nice guy to bullshit with, mad props to him for being a badass Chip slinger. But He informed me that he was on back order for 1350 U-bolt yokes but he has 1410 U-bolt yokes in stock 90$. and the billet girdled yokes are 240$Ish very nice part's. But I'm still at a dilemma? I have a new 1350 weld yoke and Joint.

(I Apologize if I miss quoted you Jess or have the prices wrong. I suffered a lot of Drain- Bamage as a Child and as a Result spend too much time in the shop and on Pirate4x4.com to compensate for my Affliction)

So Here are my options

1.) I could just put new straps on the old yoke cross fingers go wheeling. 15$

2.) Order a forged 1350 U bolt style yoke from someone else. (Not HAD) swap it with new seal and crush color. cross fingers and hope it gets here on time. . 95$

3. Order a 1410 U-bolt Yoke/ 1410 weld yoke for my driveshaft, add a new Joint turn/weld/pound/wrench/ go wheel. $180+

4.) Machine some billet 4140 straps and match them to the yoke so it’s a perfect fit for the 1 3/16 U-joint cap. Retap the yoke to 3/8th Unf and use cap screws to hold it down. $Buck-2-80

On a side note I'm planning on building pinion skid to that will tie it into the truss/ diff cover to protect whatever rought I go, but haven't gotten that far yet. I also am on the fence about a traction bar im going to test this weekend once the driveshaft is back in to see if one is neccesary. I also plan to test if I should remove the Revolver style Shackles.

But For now I'm stuck working in the cities during the week :mad3: 2 hours away so I have to sit here and think about what to do...

So what do you guys think?

MNtal,
Man you have got a whole lot of work into that blazer. Your build is awesome and I love the fact that you stayed with the 6.2. A diesel trail truck is just cool; one thing I think is really awesome that I noticed from your pics is that sweet exhaust setup.
That 2 into 1 is awesome, on my truck I really didn't have much room on one side for the pipe to fit and the asshats at the muffler shop decided to put a nice little 2" neck down to clear the 208 where it's clocked up at, a setup like yours would alleviate that problem.

Iron Range Off-Highway Vehicle Recreation Area

Gilbert is home to Minnesota's first designated state recreation area for off-highway vehicles (OHV) and all-terrain vehicles (ATV). This park features more than 1,200 acres of recreation trails, scramble areas, training, hill climbs, rock crawls, special events. This northern Minnesota OHV facility is for use by off-road motorcycles, all-terrain vehicles, and 4x4 Jeeps and trucks. This park is open to the public for recreational riding and will also host state and national competitive events.

Some areas offer a view of northern Minnesota from 200-foot-high mountains of ore that stretch more than 20 miles. More than approximately 30 miles of trails are available, along with a six-bay wash area.

Managed by the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (MN-DNR), the park also features safety training and practice facilities for riders of various skill levels. In this Northern Minnesota Park, OHV trails and areas are signed with the degree of difficulty for users. There will be no charge for admission, but off-road vehicles must be properly registered for off-road use and be equipped with standard safety equipment and a muffler.

Areas for activities and special events include a multi-purpose event area, 4x4 rock crawl and obstacle course, tough-truck competition course, sand and mud drags, hill climbs, motorcycle track, observed trails, snowmobile events, bicycle motocross or mountain bike events and more.

Planning and land acquisition are currently underway for a proposed 2,400acre addition to the OHV Park located just east of Virginia.

Well the rig worked awesome on labor day weekend. And I ended up with option 1 since my new 1350 yoke didn’t get here till Tuesday last week. :mad3:
So last Friday after work I pulled the truck in for a Little PM work and decided to put the new pinion yoke on.

http://i681.photobucket.com/albums/vv175/MNtal/IMG_7550.jpg

But I couldn’t just put that new bling on without adding something I made to protect it. So using the pinion shim as a template I cut some 3/8ths thick 6”wide plate to 7 inches.

http://i681.photobucket.com/albums/vv175/MNtal/IMG_7553.jpg

http://i681.photobucket.com/albums/vv175/MNtal/IMG_7555.jpg

http://i681.photobucket.com/albums/vv175/MNtal/IMG_7554.jpg

Brought it to the mill squared off the top edge and used a ½” carbide end mill to punch all the wholes through.

I then Measured the pinion support to find were the radius blended to a flat surface for clearance and approximated a measurement of 4.75. then using a whole saw I roughed out the hole. I used a offset boring head to finish it to size.

http://i681.photobucket.com/albums/vv175/MNtal/IMG_7559.jpg

http://i681.photobucket.com/albums/vv175/MNtal/IMG_7561.jpg

http://i681.photobucket.com/albums/vv175/MNtal/IMG_7564.jpg

I then test fit the part on the support and mounted it to the axle housing to trace the profile of the dif with a sharpie.

http://i681.photobucket.com/albums/vv175/MNtal/IMG_7566.jpg

http://i681.photobucket.com/albums/vv175/MNtal/IMG_7567.jpg

I then went about making a bend template for the pinion skid.

http://i681.photobucket.com/albums/vv175/MNtal/IMG_7569.jpg

http://i681.photobucket.com/albums/vv175/MNtal/IMG_7570.jpg

I then cut a piece of steel for the skid or dif shovel.

I traced out the design that was in my head and started cutting holes for drain and speed.

I like Using annular cutters as Hole saws are cheap pieces of shit that can do the job but are nowhere near as nice as annular cutters.

When it comes to notching tube or cutting holes of any size annular cutters kick ass.

http://i681.photobucket.com/albums/vv175/MNtal/IMG_7574.jpg

http://i681.photobucket.com/albums/vv175/MNtal/IMG_7577.jpg

http://i681.photobucket.com/albums/vv175/MNtal/IMG_7575.jpg

http://i681.photobucket.com/albums/vv175/MNtal/IMG_7577.jpg

Then using some scrap as a template to trace I cut some weight off the dif shovel with the plasma.

http://i681.photobucket.com/albums/vv175/MNtal/IMG_7578.jpg

http://i681.photobucket.com/albums/vv175/MNtal/IMG_7579.jpg

Then all that was left was to bend it the same as the pattern and weld it all together paint and mount. I ended up drilling and tapping 4 3/8ths holes at the top of the support to tie it into the truss aswell as trimming a little off the skid so its a little different then the flat template.

No my buddy todd's jeep the mud slut has a 4.0 crate motor in it. He mud races it in our club in the 4 and 6 cylinder class and kicks ass. He also trail rides with it and it is one hell of a capable rig in the rocks.

If todd is reading this, the jeep is just a french piece of shit...:flipoff2:

But There is anouther red YJ named MUD SLUT in minnesota that I've seen on mn-jeep.com that looks very similar I think he's north of us though never met him.

Actually I run with 1 cherokee, 2cj5's, 1fj40, 1yuppiejeep, 1 cj7, one fully independent suzuki samurai. my pals are mostly jeep guys. (sad huh???) I'm that fat pig of the bunch that has to squeeze were they go and piss them off. All of them are very well buit rigs and very knowledgable wheelers.

The fullsize guys I know like to play in the mud and are very good at it, but I like trails and rocks a hell of alot more.

Hmm...Jeeps and Burnsville kind of screams that BOR crew with all their hemi Jeeps, but the fully independent Sammi...that sounds like RPM? What club are you running with? And where can a person take an ATV out down here in southern Minnesota? I didn't realize how cool living 2 miles from the park was until I moved to farm country. :shaking:

But Back to the tires.

for the last 6 weeks I've Been calling once a week to My Tire guy who is giving me a :smokin: deal on them. (About what 4 wheel parts quoted me but the money stays local / and no shipping)

And Every Week he has calls probably three times and Talks to Interco trying to find out WTF is going on. Every time he calls they say they are on the Truck. Yet no tires!!! :mad3:

I told him a week ago to just call if they get here because I don't want

I'm Kind of locked into a set of 16.5 Rims that I spent forever turning into double beadlocks. And I’m thinking about canceling my order and going with 42 Irok Stickies.

So hears the Skinny... I call my tire guy and he was finally able to give me a straight answer as to where the fuck are my tires??? They are not coming. turns out Interco has been feeding him bullshit for 9 weeks past the original 12 that they said they were on back order.

He told me that the molds for the 16.5 tire is messed up and they have no idea as to when they will be going back into production.

Being a tool maker, it doesn't surprise me when they outsource a product overseas, That they can't produce a decent mold to meet production deadlines.

If its not American made It probably is made like Shit. :mad3:

the Truss is just a bent hoop with two kickers and the ram mounts on with some two piece clamps I made. The ram is from the hydraulic surplus center 2.5 bore x 8" stroke. Im running a modified Diesel power steering pump with two V-belts on the pully. The pump feeds the Stock hydro boost, wich then feeds too the charlynne orbital valve, wich then goes to a 5x9" PSC tranny cooler mounted to the radiator infront of a 10" SPAL electric fan, wich then feeds to a hydraulic filter, before finally returning back to the pump...

Watch the clearance with your engine cross member. Mine is very tight and when I lost my brakes and went for a ride backwards down hill resulting in jumping my truck backwards going off a ledge it bent one of the fittings on top of my ram wich resulted in a loss of steering.:shaking:

Well time for an Upadate...

Since I have been building a CJ-10A all winter for one of my bestfriends, that we still haven't finished.

I decided it was time to tie up the loose ends on my pile and get it ready for the wheeling season, so two weeks ago I brought CHET back in the Shop for some well needed R&R.

And After busting my Ass to:

Cut off old disk brake brackets and replace them with new one's from DIY4X,
Remove the old engine crossmember and fabricate a new one,
R&R the transfer cases, check for wear, reseal them, and add fill plugs to the PTO covers,
Build a cable shifter for the 203 Reduction box,
Service both axle's,
Remove the old Wiring harness to strip it down to bare minimum,
Sandblast the entire Inside of the tub for floor work and bedliner, :barf:
Aswell as clean up spots on the cage for added reinforcement and mounts for the aluminum roof,
Remove front clip so my friend could tear down the motor toaddress Coolant issue with motor while I do other things...

I was finally getting to the home stretch with my list of things to do as I am paying a friend to do the motor. One as a birthday present to myself because I hate working on motors, two because I hate working on motors, three because I have no time. Oh and did I mention I hate working on motors.

I got the word yesterday morning that the 6.2 = :nuke:

Knowing that this was eventually going to happen to that motor, I was trying to stay optomistic and was hoping I would get the word back from the machine shop that the heads were fine and it was only going to be needing Head gaskets and the ARP stud Kit I ordered...

But they were pronounced DOA :lmao: (all my buddies at the Shop) and I was shortly there after given the call... :(

So with memorial out of the question... I think on Sunday I'm going to hold a ceremony and bury the motor out by the big oak tree, next to my friends cat.

I mean after all it lived a pretty hard life, ether, hyrdo locked from rain filling up the air cleaner, The occasional low oil pressure starved climb, Numerous cold starts, and quite a few times were I forgot to turn on the fan, etc, etc, :nuke:...

I can’t really think of a better way to pay my last respects other then burying it, I mean it will be my birthday after all. :D

Motor mod's planned are 3200 Rpm Governing Spring, Intercooler, 4" exhaust, possible fuel mods, possibly bigger turbo hx-35 and larger injectors.

I need to learn more before I get in over my head with the motor. been on 4btswaps.com and anywere else trying to do some research.

Which leaves me with trying to figure out what to do about a Trans and Engine Adaptor.

http://i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae336/MNtal2/4bt001Medium.jpg

http://i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae336/MNtal2/4bt018Medium.jpg

I Currently have a 4 year old supposedly rebuilt 700R4.

Unknown Internal mods? The tranny has worked perfectly and taken quite a bit of abuse. I have it setup running through the stock cooler then a B&M cooler and a remote mounted tranny filter. I'm using a Art car shifter and love the Auto/Manual valve body. The TV cable was hooked up in the stock configuration on the motor.

The Gear Ratios: are 3.06, 1.62, 1.00, 0.70,

27 spline output.

I'm unsure of the factory specs for the 6.2l Torque converter? 800 stall is the best I've been able to come up from an unknown source. From what I've read, the best stall to use with the 4bt is 1200-1600Rpm.

the 6.2liter 700R4 used a 6 on 10.5 bolt pattern to bolt the torque converter to the flex plate. That is not compatible with the 6 on 11.5 Dia. bolt pattern on the TH400's or TH475's flex plates used behind the 4bt's with GM transmission adaptors.

The conversion has been done before by either torque converter/ or flex plate Modifications. Re-drill the FLex plate or weld bosses on the torque converter.

I need to talk to my tran's guy this weekend and find someone who knows more about these motors.

Currently the 4 Transmissions I am considering are.

1.) My 700r4
Pros: I own it, No t-case modifications , Mount changes, or driveshaft changes required.
Cons: possible new torque converter or flywheel, Even lower life expectancy, TV cable would have to be adapted to work.

I Would use a GM engine adaptor, flywheel, wave ring, starter etc... seen them for 600-750$ not horrible

2.) Th475
Pros: 3.06 first gear, stronger straight cut gears, Heavy duty clutches and sprags, No TV cable.
Cons: I would have to get a new 203 32 spline input, possibly a different 6 bolt adaptor, Would have no over drive for cruising to the trail, would have to switch the TH475 internals to a TH400 4x4 case. $$$

I could use the same GM engine adaptor etc…

3.) Th400 2.48,1.48, 1.0
Pros: Strong easier to find parts for, No TV cable.
Cons: 2.48 first gear, no over drive for cruising to the trail, have to get a new 203 32 spline input possibly a different 6 bolt I

I could use the same GM engine adaptor etc…

4.) Allison 545 (R) 3.45:1, 2.25:1, 1.41:1, 1.00:1,
Pros: Gear ratios, bullet proof, simple.
Cons: $$$, 289or 329lb’s dry without 20qts of fluid, hangs down 11.2” bellow centerline, No Idea if I can mount a T-case to it

Uses a SAE 3 Automotive Adaptor

If it fails it can be used as an example of why not to use it... if it doesnt it just fuels the arguement... I don't really care I just want to go wheeling.

Most people aern't putting this motor in a Offroad only Rig, Most are doing it for DD street rigs that they want to get fuel Economy out of.

Ive been Researching the shit out of the subject (Weeding Bullshit from fact), and actually calling people I know with experience with these motors to get they're honest opinions.

For instance I talked with a friend of mine who has done quite a few conversions (does them for a living) and He told me to just run it until I can find a T475.

He thinks as long as I don't mod the 4bta motor too much or drive like a moron, the 700R4 Should take it. Its been the genral concensus. I'm only hoping to get anouther season or 2 max out of the trans before phasing it out.

If I buy the better adaptor that will allow me to run the trans I have, it will allow me to build the A better tranny like a Allison 1000, T400/T475, 4l80/4l85 to put in at a later date.

I don't see how I'm out anything if it fails? correct me if I'm wrong...

4bt FTMFW!!!!! i'm a huge diesel fan, i was thinking a SAS + 4BT, but the cons IMO on a 4bt is weight ~700lbs dry no accessories then add transmission your looking ~1100lbs +/- the 6.6L durmax is 830lbs +/-

you can make alot of power out of that 4BT, get a P-pump, bigger injectors and bigger turbo setup or twins and your looking at 300+/600+ (hp/tq) at the wheel.

as far as your trans selection.... get the Allison, a little $pendy but you will want it later. remember that your max TQ is ~1800rpm +/- you wont have to do much before you start breaking stuff, or shelling other transmissions

4bt FTMFW!!!!! i'm a huge diesel fan, i was thinking a SAS + 4BT, but the cons IMO on a 4bt is weight ~700lbs dry no accessories then add transmission your looking ~1100lbs +/- the 6.6L durmax is 830lbs +/-

try 800lbs dry

you can make alot of power out of that 4BT, get a P-pump, bigger injectors and bigger turbo setup or twins and your looking at 300+/600+ (hp/tq) at the wheel.

According to the Cummins 1997 Recon tag its rated at 125hp at 2500 rpm, So I'm starting off with a pretty good platform, I mean its no PE pump but hey its no 6.2 either.

The plan for now is to try and get the 4bta up between 160-180 hp & 400+ ft/lbs. Its a Ve pump motor and I dont have the coin to really be dropping into a ton of motor mods off the bat If I had the money I would build the Tranny first.

When it gets time for more torque then that I am going to find a PE pump motor and start building that one and swap the two and then sell this one.

As far as your trans selection.... get the Allison, a little $pendy but you will want it later. remember that your max TQ is ~1800rpm +/- you wont have to do much before you start breaking stuff, or shelling other transmissions

a little spendy? try real spendy... I'm looking into it as an option but the Transmission+Controller almost rules it out in my world. I can purchase/rebuild a T475 myself or trade labor to have it done for under $800... its gonna be hard to beat that.

I thought Peak torque on those motors is actually made lower then that around 1200rpm, I could be wrong.

Does anyone know what the output size/spline is on the Allison 1000 or the overall length?

The output shaft on the 4wd Allison 1000 is 1.475" diameter 29 spline. For an Ally 1000 with the GM bellhousing the overall length is just about identical to a 4L80E.

I don't suppose you would be interested in a 32 spline output shaft for an Allison 1000? :grinpimp:

Thanks for the compliment, Those are 44" Tsl's on 16.5 Rims I was running 15lbs of Air at gilbert because I didn't really want to blow a beed. But they were really balooney and I think I'm going to try 12 lbs in the front and ten in the rear this weekend when I head over to WI with some friends from Rock Bottom 4x4 Club.

5 days inluding the 4th of july was spent getting ready for a 5 Day trip to the Gilbert OHV Park the fallowing weekend.

I barrowed a fuel pump and mounted it via exhaust u bolts. A barrowed Fuel Cell made its way into the bed after I made a Mount for it that would use exhisting holes in the bed.

http://i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae336/MNtal2/CHET/IMG_8496.jpg

http://i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae336/MNtal2/CHET/IMG_8495.jpg

I had to notch the frame by the power steering pump and make a new mount to install my Diesel power steering pump on the TBI motor. A modified Alternator bracket was in order to use my larger 90Amp alternator. The 6.2 y pipe was cut in half and a band clamp was used to join the two halfs so I could use my exhisting exhaust (4"):D. Bought a batch of spring buckets and the rear supension was lowered 5" Via new rear spring mounts and shackles (1.25" heims) that so far work ok.

http://i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae336/MNtal2/CHET/IMG_8492.jpg

Alan And I spent the better part of a day figuring out the wiring harness, then I found out the night before I left that I had the wrong Torque converter in and that my tranny was the weak 23 spline input instead of the larger 27spline found in later years. and I had no gear luckily it didn't hurt the tranny or the torque converter but was a major PITA... I Spent the better part of the next 24 hours pulling the trans and putting my 6.2 torque converter on, swapping leaf spring shims from front to rear then repacking Wheel bearings, Gear oil, and one U-joint in the front end that was Iffy. Probably other stuff I can't remember due to multiple days without sleep....

I Loaded it on the Trailer picked my girlfriend up in the cities and headed north for 5 day vacation to Gilbert. The truck was painted again on the way up, and the front fenders were still wet when we went into the park on thursday, power steering belts and alternator belts were put on at the camp ground thursday morning. after the first day of wheeling a water pump was changed the Alternator was rewired correctly 3 wire and the truck got RE-Nut and Bolted to check everything. After the second day of wheeling I swapped in a spare Junkyard axle and spindle after Grenading my outer and breaking the inner in two places out on the trail. On the third and final day of wheeling the Tranny Pan got the snot smashed out of it in UA Alley while I spotted my buddy Ryan onto a dumb line. I Tightened up the bolts cleaned up my mess and went wheeling with the Group for the rest of the day...

Cut My tires sometime in August and absolutely love the way this pattern works.took about 5 hours for all 4 tires and about 9 beers a tire... had to call to get a ride home from the shop but the tires got done and I got to go wheeling the fallowing day, obviously a little later then I planned but none the less... I have about 2 rides on them and so far they work awsome even at 10psi front and 8psi rear...

http://i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae336/MNtal2/CHET/IMG_8482.jpg

Had my Truck on the Hoist to inspect the rig and fix a few small things and found both of my Knuckles where cracked. I called a friend to see what He thought, and He asked me if my steering Ram was limited at all. I said No, not ever thinking it would be a problem. and He explained to me them flexing because every time I turned the ram was trying to complete its stroke only to twist knuckles till they wripped off. F___ I'm glad I caught that before it failed next weekend.

Decided I didn't have a choice but to grind out the cracks and weld them back together with gussets on the nuckles. Also decided to gusset the inner C's.

I never thought of the nuckles flexing but it makes sence so I'm going to make up some Ram Stops while I'm up here this week and try and get the rig back together for next weekend in River Falls.

Yeah Definately, we'll have to meet up for a ride or something next season.

You should definately try and make it up to gilbert if you've never been its like MECA for ORV's. other wise there are tons of great wheeling spots around the State, Mostly private land, like those last pictures are from last weekend at Frontnac Farms at the LoneRiders/Borderline 4x4 Halloween T4T's Event.

The tires kick up alot of crap but its mostly mud spray and dust wich sucks worse then mud. Tree's are far worse then either mud or dust, and I miss my windshield most days (not really an option anymore :shaking: ) I need to get my Aluminum roof done. With my rig as tall as it is, and with no cover it seems to hit every branch that hangs down, and I am forever fighting tree limbs out of the way.

I have had the truck up to a guesstimate of somewhere between 40-45 open field, back road, and blacktop. I would say 20-25 on trails in the woods. The rear tires are not an issue kicking things forward so much as the lack of windshield, hood, and Roof.

I will say this is the last fullsize trail rig I build for myself :(. The next will be a 48" wide, 112"wb, 2-4 seat buggy more set up for the dumb trails.

Sadly we don't have any FSR roads, GIA Trails, or Minimum maintenance roads In my area and due to my rig not being street legal at all, I doubt if I would drive them anyways with this rig. If I'm going to hit a light trail or Minum Maintenance road I take a different rig.

My Advice for you Kyle is Join a club that travels a lot and hit the MNjeep.com Board, Rock Bottom 4x4 Club is badass and travels a lot, If you want I can get you hooked up for a RRR event as a guest. Otherwise The MN4WDA has a list of open events on their web page and there are a lot of kick ass guys in the Drive Association.

I've done more wheeling this season than I ever expected and have had blast, I'm broke as F___ and I don't want to stop, but with winter coming it looks like build season is here.

It’s been a Rough Season, My driving is getting a lot less cautious, And my rig is now able to take most of it, I've repaired a lot of stuff this season from letting inexperienced friends drive my rig, and from not having the experience myself, or from finding weak links.

This wheeling Season -

*Memorial Weekend in my 81 Toyota PU = blown 8" rear end
*5 days - shakedown Run in Gilbert = Trans pan, 2 outers 1 inner Front axle Shafts, spindle, 2 lock outs, Exhaust hanger, muffler tip, body damage.
*T4T's Car show = 4 cans of spray paint, 12 brats and a case of Beer, wicked sun burn.
*2 day- camping trip with girlfriend two Harbors area 81 Toyota PU
*3-day Donnelly Fun Days RRR club Ride = front Outer, lockout, spindle, Exhaust, body damage, etc...
*1 day ride In Hudson WI at Scratch's Place, body damage.
*2 days - Labor Day weekend = front drive shaft, 2 broken knuckles, chipped ring gear, exhaust, brake line, body damage.
*1 day - road along in Gilbert rock Rash with bbaxter51 and Rock Bottom 4x4
*2 days- Road along with my RRR, in River falls Wisconsin Trail Riders fall run after Radiator shit out on the trailer.
*3 days- RRR T4T's Trail ride = muffler tip, toggle switch, body damage.
*1 day- Frontenac Farms Halloween T4Ts Weekend= front driveshaft, some fluid, body damage...

Had a couple days in there Scouting possible Southern Park locations in SE part of the state.

Its been a great season, but its going to be time to cut it all apart again here soon.

Thanks for the advice - I'll swing over to the Jeep site more often, as I realized at the end of this season that is where all of the event information is posted...

I live north of the cities, so joining a club based 2hrs away would be tough - but who knows what will happen in the future. Hopefully I can make it to one of the RRR's events - looking at the pictures it looks like a lot of fun, Dresser is getting a little worn out...

Winter always brings a host of upgrades - I managed to go wheeling 4 times this year.. that sucks and I need to get out more.

Got CHET back in the shop for a little freshening up. I forgot to take pictures of any work I did but I snapped a couple of when I first got in the shop.

Things Accomplished:

Built a mount for the high lift behind the front passenger seat.
Mounted some E-track on both sides in the bed so I can tie down gear.
Checked all the fluids, and nut and bolted the suspension and steering.
Lowered the front of the rear springs one inch which fixed a pinion angle issue I was having.
Welded the front driveshaft back together and got it reinstalled.

As soon as Dave finishes paying me, they'll belong to the 4th owner, Dave and I have a deal worked So he gets Kurt’s 4 Cut Tsl's and I get the two uncut spares Kurt had at the farm.

I'll be running those two once they see the Knife, plus my two fronts on some 12bolt Double Bead locks I just picked up. And I'll keep my rears for spares, unless I can figure out how to make them hold Air and then I'll run them, and keep my good tires for spares... :flipoff2:

Oh I was talking about the big memorial day bash at the end of May. Myself and three other rigs are trying to desperately race to the finish line to get our shit finished up before the big party down there in Wisconsin.

You should hit me up some time you're on your way up to Gilbert. I'm in Duluth 11 months out of the year so the OHV park is only 50minutes north of me.

I'll be at my Clubs local land for Memorial doing some wheeling and trail construction.

I'll be in Gilbert the first Weekend in June for National Trails Day with a few friends. It’s an event hosted by the Northern MN Jeepers where we will be doing Trail Maintenance in the Park and might possibly get to go into the Virginia Expansion to cut the perimeter Trail!!!

You should come up if your free and bring anyone else that wants to come and help. Gloves, boots and good attitude are all that are required…

Post up here if you plan to attend: http://www.mn-jeep.com/forum/showthread.php?t=25483

If I was buying a locker now I would consider the new Yukon version of the Detroit. Or if I had the Coin, OX locker's would find their way in as they Rock.

Edit: 4bt is slated to be installed in September lots of wheeling to do this spring/summer and I'm saving up for parts...

In this...

http://i681.photobucket.com/albums/vv175/MNtal/zzz.jpg

So I've been collecting parts (spendy ones) and researching as this will be my fiirst cummins swap. I've been talking with everyone I know local with experience, but I'm still open to advice from guys that have built 4bts or 6bts before. So if you know something speek up...

I've been lurking on 4btswaps.com and other boards and there is alot of good tech information on that site and others, but there is also a ton of crap to weed through so I feel alot of that has been a waste... But I guess that is every where...:mr-t:

So on to some of the parts I've acquired,

I have a used Adaptor and a new machined billet Flex plate from Destroked. Super nice parts and well worth the money.

Destroked: http://www.destroked.com/parts.shtml

http://i681.photobucket.com/albums/vv175/MNtal/adaptor.png

http://i681.photobucket.com/albums/vv175/MNtal/flexplate.png

I purchased them from my buddy Paul at Screamin Seeman Offroad who does some of the cleanest GM Cummins conversion's I've ever seen. Dude's a true Artist...

Check him out SSOR: http://www.screaminseemanoffroad.com/

So that brings me to my list...

Motor mod's I've planned and parts I need to acquire:

3rd Gen motor Mounts,
box the inside of the frame,
I'll fabricate a bracket for the Throttle Valve cable.
3200 Rpm Governing Spring,
New Fuel pin,
Advance the pump,
Adjust smoke screw,
75hp injectors,
BD Super B turbo, (Unless I find a hy35 or he341 for super cheap)
mod factory aftercooler for 3" intake piping,
3" off the turbo to 4" exhaust all the way out the back,
Pyrometer is a must,
Considering a guillotine Air shut off valve for the intake,
oh and maybe Nitrous (Cause I really wanna happy button on my trail rig :flipoff2:)

Anything I've missed?

Sorry if I missed it, how much did that 4BT set you back if you don't mind saying, and how many miles are on it/on the vehicle it came out of?

What I have is a Cummins 4BTA diesel engine out of a Frito Lay Van. It is a 120hp VE pump, water after cooler version with approx. 60,000 miles on the Cummins Recon. I got it with the fluid filled engine mounts (for sale), downpipe, and air cleaner assembly from the van.

So far I'm into the motor $1800 plus the cost of fuel to go get it from Wisconsin. I got a good deal on the adaptor and billet machined Flex plate from Paul at SSOR but lets just say they weren't cheap either. So with the new tranny I just broke $3k, I still have a couple big dollar items left so If I get the swap done for under $5k with a new turbo, water meth injection, and other break sh_t parts I'll be happy. If not it will just take me a little longer then planned.

Pics kinda suck but you get the Ideah, we ordered preformed flanges, j bends, and collectors. My buddy capped the middle between the tubes and then welded the collectors on the outside to seal it. 1 7/8" primarys w/ 3" collectors. 3" is all that was available in the time frame we were working with. And we might choose to cut them off expand them to 4" but that won't really be a big deal to change that. The first race is Saturday so we will know after that if changes need to be made.

The Radiator sits in a pair of formed C-Channel buckets that are lined with Conveyor belt. The top is Identical but it’s just a simple lever style clamp I came up with that holds the Radiator down and firm. I don't know if it s right but it works.

I will tell you don't mount your Fans like that as they will bounce up and down and break ribs in your Radiator, :shaking: (I am building a shroud) I also think I have my coolers mounted so they are trapping air on top and causing fluid cavitations.

What most people get hung up on are the corner guards because they stick out and look cool. All they do is offer some protection for the $400 radiator that is way too F-ing HUGE.

That is a great rad setup BTW! I noticed that cradle setup in the baddest chevy thread. Great setup!

They are just butted up against the header flange and welded on the back outside. The Motor made 698hp on the engine dyno with 1.625 primary tubes, so we are hoping with 1.875 it will make 715-725hp, but the 3" collector probably isn't helping. For the Application, and for the fact we where under a time constraint, my buddy stepped up and built the pair in 6 hours... Yes,
1983 k5 blazer with a 6.2 liter Diesel

4 core, The core is 34 x 19 x 2.125 not including the tanks I can get you more dimensions this weekend if you want.

It also has ports for an oil cooler on the driver side and a trans cooler on the passenger side tanks.

Late 90's Chevy trucks with 454's have a radiator with the same frontal area as the earlier diesel radiator, but with a more efficient 2 row aluminum core. The 2 row aluminum core is just about the same thickness as the old 4 core brass radiators and cools better. It also has oil/trans coolers in both tanks.

Ah...that explains why it caught my eye. Unfortunately, I'm not going to be able to go with that wide of a core, but it totally explains why your saddle structure stands out so prominently.

I figure I'll need to stay around the 28 to 29 inch core width---otherwise, I won't be able to keep my tires out of the radiator tanks at full stuff / full lock.

After that I installed the fan shroud I made last Wednesday night. I then built a winch mount and installed a 12,000lb Viper winch with Amsteel Blue rope and a fairlead. After that I cleaned up the wiring harness front to back, I then made an Aluminum roof and welded some tabs to my roll cage to mount it.

I took my sister wheeling Saturday and had a real good time, it was her first time out and she really enjoyed it. Had only three issues one being a wire came loose on the toggle switch for the fans, I wrecked a side wall on one of the front tires because I was driving like a dick head, and the cooler tipped over and all the ice fell out. Not a big deal, plenty of cold ice keeping the beer cool back at camp.

Sunday I switched out the other front tire for my other cut and I worked the camp ground for a bit. We went out for about 2 hours and then had a slow gentle flop in a washed out dirt ravine while we where descending the top of one of the nastier trails at our local spot. Not a big deal, We tipped it back on the tires with the help of a friend and kept going. Got later in the day and about 5:30ish, Alan was at the wheel and we were going up a hill climb called Jacobs Jaunt. We had just crested the rock ledge and the front end got sideways in a bad spot, Alan stayed in the throttle to long trying to power through and the rig did a half gainer and landed hard on the driver rear corner of the cage. It then continued to flip back and hit passenger front corner of the cage on the rock ledge, we then barrel rolled once more all the way around until the front got hung up on a tree. All in all 2 complete rolls.

I was the only one who bumped my head, it was very minor and my own fault. My belt was not the tightest since I was in the back seat, and it stretched a good 6 inches when we inverted. after the truck stopped we got out checked for leaks and fire, and made sure everyone was ok, we then laughed a bit, and I sent the gal that was riding with me for help to put it back on its tires. We righted the rig with a tow strap to another vehicle and used my winch to keep it from coming down the hill. I then told Alan he was grounded.

As far as I am concerned the 4 of us got out without a scratch, well that was at least until Alan fell walking down the hill and cut his elbow.

Score one point for Schedule 40 Pipe, none of the tubes cracked and none of the welds broke, it was all deformation, and from how hard we rolled, and what the cage and roof landed on, that would of mangled any material with the design flaws my cage had...

Unlike us, the cage on the other hand was not so lucky, so after some tooling around we decided to head to the shop to see if we could get Chet ready for National Trails Day at Gilbert next weekend. Since I all ready volunteered my rig for limo duty, I wasn't about to back out and after we crawled around inspecting the entire truck and finding nothing but a bent cage from some design weaknesses, Needless to say the thrash fest ensued…

I see uncut Swampers, Swampers with grooves in the lugs, and Swampers with half of the center lugs cut out. Please give me your opinion on how well each of the cut versions works compared to the uncut Swampers. Do the more labor-intensive cuts really perform well enough to justify the effort that goes into them?

By the way....is there a proper name for each of those styles of tire cuts? Maybe a topic for another thread---no hijack intended.

Short Answer: yes...

Long Answer:

There are a couple threads on the PBB that talk about cut tires, try doig a search in the general 4x4 section. In my opinion the difference between a uncut swamper and a cut swamper, is equivilant to the difference between a rig with a front locker and a rig without one, It literally is a night and day difference.

The rears are what I would call a Southern Cut TSL (old version, new version is different) and they work fenominal for loose dirt and muddy hill climbs, they go two directions, forward and Down. They don't work that great in Rocks as they dont grab hard surfaces well but they do work amazing on loose climbs were you are constantly fighting for traction.

The Front which is a variation of a Tri Cut, I call it a "3-beer-cut" well because it takes three beers to get through one... I guess thats pretty self explanitory, but regardless is a good all around cut it has alot of edges to grab, flexes extremely well, conforms to rocks awsome, and cleans out fairly well in muddy conditions, and so far holds up really well to Rocks.

Couple different Names for the Wheeler-lingo-dicitonary:

* Southern-Cut
* Bama-Cut
* Tri-Cut
* Split-Center-Cut
* Siped or Standard-Cut Tsl

There are also different cuts for boggers depending on what you are using them for. A cupped or scooped lug on a bogger essentially is a step above removing every other lug, It is mainly done for mud racing and I would highly recomend staying away from it for trail riding or never take one Rock crawling. Take it on anything hard and be prepaired to rip that lug right off. You can also back cut and shave a tire to reduce weight and allow the tire to clean out and scoop better but thats another topic for another thread.

In a nut shell there are quite a few variations and all of them work a little different.

I plan to run 4 of the same tires as the ones on the front currently, the Southern cuts are on loan as I am selling them to a friend. I am also considering running 150lbs of steel shot/water in each front tire. I would really like to try and run a sticky tire but we will see.

150 pounds of weight in each front tire in that already heavy pig!?! I wouldnt think it would be a high enough weight percentage in that thing to make a huge difference, except causing extra stress to the front end?

We did 150 lbs/tire in the comp buggy, but it weighed 2000 lbs and the front was light anyways with a little aluminum 4 cyl. It did help a bunch in climbing, granted, but it was 15% of total vehicle weight. Does it really help when it is down around 5% of total weight? Have you tried it with and without the extra weight?

Gavan,

Never tried it, just intrigued by the Idea, it would probably freeze and cause all sorts of corosion issues here in MN anyway. But I might try it to see, don't know unless you try right?

Quick question for you, Have you ever hung off the corner off a rig to keep it from tipping over or used a cheater strap/ski rope to keep a tire down? similar prinicple you are just choosing where you put the weight.

Oh, I did not see the "considering" part. I thought you had already done it.

It worked well on the buggy, but the good comes with the bad. We just used black beauty so no freezing concerns, but we never aired it up past 4 PSI so we were not worried about moisture in the black beauty.

It was noticeably harder to generate wheel speed. Of course it was a little ecotec 4, and not a torque monster, but it bogged things down. It was harder on the steering system as well. Full hydro, but you could tell it was heating up more and it was slower to steer. We had to go to an8 lines to get the steering we wanted. It was a combination of a lot of factors, but the weight did not help.

It would get a little squirrley if you had to back down a hill climb you did not make, sometimes the front wanted to pass the rear. When you tried to go fast with it, it played hell with the suspension. Basically the axle threw the body around, instead of the body staying still and the axle moving. You might have better luck with a heavier body.

My take home from running them on the unlimited buggy for a couple years, and seeing it with and without the weight, is if you absolutely, positively have to take the prescribed line and you never drive it over 10 MPH, it helps. I would not mess around with it in a recreational wheeler. I am going to spend a weekend soon taking the 150 pounds out of the old competition tires because they are going on my Jeep and I have no desire to deal with it.

I believe I've seen the "Southern cut", or a very similar variant therof, referred to as "Aetna cut"---possibly from one of Tim Cameron's buggy builds?

First time I'd seen the "Tri Cut" was on Stephen Watson's Blazer from Top Truck Challenge ---2001, I think. Among my circle of friends, I've referred to it on occasion as "Watson cut", which was fine...my friends knew what I was referring to.

I suspect you're right though, that there are probably more names than we know all describing basically the same tire cut. Probably too late in the game for standard, universally accepted names for the more popular variations.

Couple more pics from another camera...

Did alot of wheeling in the two days I was up north with the boys from Rock Bottom 4x4. we camped at the Sherwood forest campground, Cut trail in the 3500 acre Virginia expansion, Wheeled the afternoon in the IROHV (Gilbert) 1200 acre OHV Park, and then Worked and Wheeled on the NOT OPEN TO THE PUBLIC YET Mesabi Mountain Trail (9 miles) with the the Northern Minnesota Jeepers.

CHET worked pretty flawlessly and the only thing I had to fix was a broken fuse from the flop on Memorial. Other then that some rock rash on the Driveshafts and skids, some bolts that loosened up on the passenger rear axleshaft/Hub, and a little tree rash on the cowl, it was a Great Weekend with no seriouse carnage. Oh and I was able to split fuel/food/beer/camping with 3 friends who came up with me so it only cost $98, can you say Awsome...

Those pics are from the Mesabi Mountain Trail which is not open to the public yet. The minimum requirement for that trail is recommended 35" tires, lockers front and rear, and a winch for running solo. We had two jeeps in our group that had 33's and Dana 30/35 axles that where open and they both got around just fine. They both where piloted by very experienced drivers, and where backed up by quite a few other built rigs that were able to assist when they got stuck. Not a place to bring a unproven rig or an inexperienced driver.

There is nothing in the Virginia Expansion yet except the mile of Core Road we Cut, so if you have 31’s you should be able to go out and cut trail with the DNR & NMJ just fine.

Awesome, rig looks great

Thanks.

what green did you use for the body panels and roll-bar?

The body panels are Rustoleum (Army Green),
The Cage is Krylon (Green Patio Furniture Paint),
(Black Raptor Liner) in the Bed,
(3M Rubberized under coating) in the rear Wheel wells and Firewall,
Everything else is Rustoleum (Satin Black),

I participated in the crawl for the Cure last weekend and was able to raise 320$ for the event. The event, the food, and the Campground Shenanigans were awsome, but more importantly the wheeling was epic for 27 miles in 24hours over 3 days. Two 10 hour 9 mile Trailrides with breaks and tire carnage among other things, but beisdes a few small glitches my junk was able to hold together and finish the weekend off with a nice 9 mile sunday drive.

besides a rock shoving into my tire tread and needing a plug in the rear I also ended up shelling my driveshaft when it landed on a rock. I never thought 3"dia. x .188 wall tubing would split like that. 3 miles out wiht nothing but nasty Trail ahead it was looking like a tough drive out. Luckily Wes from Burnsville Offroad's was prepaired and he loanded me the spare front shaft from his pimped out new JK. The damn thing slipped right into my my slip shaft and after I tightened up the one ubolt I took off the yoke we where back wheeling in 25 min after a interesting extraction.

But it sure It made me realize that boy do I ever wan't a Buggy.

Ya how did it fail?
Where your ring gear bolts loose/not tight?
Was the bearings still good?
Or?

Also why not the 76? or a 14 front:flipoff2:

Thanks for the moral support Jack... :flipoff2:

76 would of been nice, but I have till tomorrow to get my rig ready for the trip so a new Ring and pinion was the best I could do in the time frame...

Steering 14bolts front and rear are in the works for my buggy, hopefully I will be starting it in 2 years.

As to the failure it was not catastrophic just to many chipped teeth with one completely missing... With my luck and driving style it would of lead to a stripped Ring and Pinion wrecking my trip to SD. Thats just to big a risk for me to just let it eat with my finger crossed... Go prepaired or stay home, and I'm not staying home...

as to the cause of the failure I suspect it was the poorly designed lock nut that I used on my pinion Prior that let it loosen up and chip the teeth off the ring gear. It happened last Labor day weekend to me and it chipped two teeth on the ring gear before I caught it. I replaced the nut with liberal use of loctite, and I Used a chisel to deform the end of the nut hoping it would lock the nut and prevent it from backing off, Apparently not... :(

Guess thats what happens when you have a LP front housing, a 9.75 Dia Ring gear runnning on the coast side, and a Heavy right foot, pucks and unubtainiam shafts... Somethings gottat give, mine was the nut, live and learn. If I take out another R&P I'll install a 70 R&P without a question I just hd no time left for this go around...

I changed the lock nut style this time, hope It solves the problem for me, I'll post pictures when I get back to the shop later today I'm going to bed now...

Nope, bolts where still tight on the ring gear, I used loctite on them when I set it up 5 years ago, the problem has always been the pinion nut in my opinion...

Very intriguing failure mode and analysis.

If the Loctite and deformed threads didn't lock the nut in place, I wonder what's next to try? Maybe drill one of the flats and tap for a setscrew? Just a thought...

Well I'm finally getting around to posting up my pics from when I was out in South Dakota last week. It was an epic trip that I will remember for a long time to come. I started my Vacation out by Wrenching on my rig friday night finishing up a few changes I wanted to get done before the trip. Then Saturday morning it was off to the local Wheeling spot for my Clubs Trail ride where I wanted to shake the rig down a little before packing up and heading out to the hills. The trails Where awsome clean and Rocky from all the Rainfall we've had this summer. It flushes out the Ravines and sections of the Trails where actually Challenging again. I let Alan Drive most of the Day and it was a fairly univentful until my fuel pump died, After screwing around for a while I called my friend Dan and had CHET Drug back to camp and i winched it on the Trailer.

After a few beers and food we called it a day and Crashed at the cabin we had for the Week. In the morning we got up and set out for Polo Peak Trail wich is rated a 3 by the bh4wheelers. After we searched for the thing for 2 hours we found a place to park and cut across the Highway to the trail Head, What we found was a nice Dirt Road that wound through the hills and had one really awsome overlook.

I'm assuming there's a story to go with this leaf spring?

Late night Trailfix while we were lost and on the way out of HalJohns. I'm assuming the spring Clamp broke while I was wheeling and allowed the mainleaf to over flex since it was no longer bound to the Millitary leaf.

I noticed it was broke while my friends were trying to read the Trail Map wich is a huge Piece of shit and I was throwing rocks at my truck. :p so out came the Ductape, Bailing Wire, and a ratchet strap to get it out of the hills. Made it 10 to 15 miles of trail in the Dark and it held up Great, found out my new lights work good too...

Newish Wheels

http://i1088.photobucket.com/albums/i330/MNtal3/CHET/IMG_8998.jpg

I started building these wheels about 4 years ago and finally got them mounted up and Painted before I left for South Dakota. Upon getting them On the Blazer I promptly scratch the Shit out of the rock Rings so they matched the Rest of the Rig.

The wheels started out as a set of Wagon Wheels I bought from a guy for $100. I cut the centers out with a torch and then chucked them in our big lathe and cleaned them up. I then sandblasted the wheels wich was a huge pain because of the powdercoat that was on them. I then Cut the wheels in half with a skillsaw and once again chucked them in the lathe and trued them up. I made the inserts out of some HDPE plastic pipe that I chucked in the lathe and machined into inserts.

The Centers came from my friend Paul at SSOR and I had him weld them in. The Rock rings came from Copper Head fab and were extremely poor Quality pieces of crap. In 2009 After they where welded together I had them Painted By Alan and during assembly one of the centers pulled loose. Frustrated I tore them apart cut the weld seem apart from the inside and re welded them. I then threw the set of wheels behind My parents garage and let them sit till a couple weeks ago. Well I finally decided to mount them up, Repaint them, and Run them as I probably have 100+hrs and $300 in them.

Well on to the assembly:

I started by taking the inner rim half and cleaning it with carb choke cleaner. I then applied a thin layer of Weather stripping adhesive into the O ring Groove.

http://i1088.photobucket.com/albums/i330/MNtal3/CHET/IMG_9003.jpg

http://i1088.photobucket.com/albums/i330/MNtal3/CHET/IMG_9004.jpg

I made my own O-rings from 3/16ths Buna Oring Stock that I got from Mcmaster Carr. I pressed O-ring Material around the groove and cut the ends square with a razor blade to get the O-ring the right size. I then glued The ends together with super glue.

http://i1088.photobucket.com/albums/i330/MNtal3/CHET/IMG_8999.jpg

http://i1088.photobucket.com/albums/i330/MNtal3/CHET/IMG_9000.jpg

I then pressed the Oring down in the groove ontop of the weather strip adhesive and set the top half of the rim on it to allow the adhesive to dry. I then installed the Insert into the tire using a porta power to stretch it to a scary shape and then dropped it inside the tire.

http://i1088.photobucket.com/albums/i330/MNtal3/CHET/IMG_8995.jpg

Then I spent the next hour of my life bolting the rim together. :shaking:

That is friggin TITS! You gave me some rather disturbing ideas..... Hmm.... I wonder how much I can find a set of 17" plain steelies for :grinpimp:

I would never do it again.

But if your going to, buy rim shells and skip cutting them apart its not worth the headache.

No problem start a build thread if you decide to build some. I can give you some pointers from what I would and would not do again.

I am thinking of a similar way to put my steering arm in double sheer.

My plan was to machine the top piece and thread the arm so that they would be bolted but it looks like you welded right to the arm?

Any pics of the top side I could see for reference?

Hey are those 3/4ton rotors? If so why run them with the stock 60 caliper and bracket? It doesn't look like you grinded them to fit 15" wheels, Sooo. What is the reasoning behind the madness?

I meant break. You could argue they don't brake well either i guess. But they are very strong.

MNtal

elvis I get your point, they are strong yes but I would have to rework the bottom half of my rig to make my blazer work the way I want with them. And I don’t want to completely rework my blazer again.

I'm going to try a 70 ring and pinion with a new 70 Detroit and see how long it lasts. If I can't make it work I'll be building a different rig that weighs alot less.

The fact of the matter is I'm getting to the point with my rig that its either band aid it back together and limp it along for a little while longer or part it out and step up to a front and rear steer buggy as those are the only guys I have trouble following.

Thats why I was asking... I know they don't break, but I have never heard one way or another about the brakes on a Rockwell. :D

I called Karl Jantz yesterday and talked to him for about a half hour. Nice dude, had a good conversation and I appreciate him taking the time to talk to me.

Problem I ran into is there is no 5.38 dana 70 gears available so I would be stuck switching to 5.13. Which then means I will have to change the Rear to 5.13 aswell. Kinda shoots that in the Ass I am still going to have a low pinion front.

I think I'm going to buy another (better brand) 5.38 Ring and pinion and wheel the rest of the Season smart, then this winter start building axles for my Buggy, This fat truck is killing me...

Rig's in hibernation for the winter, Probably will be pulling the motor here in a few weeks. I Decided to send the 4bta cummins down the road, I might get a 5.3 and install that for next year.

New Yukon Gears in the front same ratio.

So far no more issues for the last three rides of my season. But the frame is really starting to get tweaked in a couple spots. The rig really could use some good R&R...

I'm concentrating on finnishing a cj10 pickup I've been building with a friend so I haven't really put alot of energy or thought into CHET lately. We'll see what happens.

Fronts are 52" rear 4" lift springs out of a K5
Rears are 56" rear 4" lift springs out of a 3/4ton

Do you have any photo's of the new cj10 pickup project ? Im sure alot of guy's on here would love to see ! The previous 10 page's are some of the best on here, I must say... Are your front fenders standard length, or did you cut & stretch to do the dove tail ?
