I went to the farm tonite mainly for a bit of R & R and also to test an engine out for the 45, this is in the red FJ60.
A few years ago I bought a Jacobs Ignition book at Hastings, it has a section on using Modules, (Toyota calls them igniters) from different makes on other models.
After trying every OEM Igniter I had (3 of them) installing a carb, starter, and plugging 147 vacuum lines we still had no spark. SO....I got the book out, and in 15 minutes had this one in the picture wired up, and the SOB fired right up.
I have been promising Henry B a tech article for Toyota Trails for a while so I am not going to go into great detail here.
If anyone needs the info quick PM me.
If any of you have ever had to buy an OEM Toyota Igniter you will understand my excitement...the last one I bought was for a mini and it cost me over $200....this one is less than $30....it is a mid 80's Chrysler every parts store keeps them, once you have wired your Totota for one, throw a spare in the truck, heck you could find the OEM plugends and leave the Toyota in place, and still carry one of these for a spare.
BTW the engine runs great, so the plan right now is to drop it into the 45, hooked to the stock 3 spd, and start driving it some, Josh and I talked and we decided to do no non-reversable changes to the truck.

Butch,

Don't do the 3 speed. Trust me...the 3 speed sucks SOOOO bad!

If you are going with the 2F, back it all up with a 4speed and case.

I know I've had them............but I hate cutting the floor, not sure if the plate even comes out like the 40's, plus I hope to find the winch to go with all the drive gear that's on there now.....how hard is it to locate the pto gear for a 4 spd t case?

I second that, the 4-speed will be SO much more drivable. There's a romantic appeal to a 3-speed in a vintage Cruiser, especially if it's on the tree, but reality hits soon after and you'll find yourself wishing you'd gone with the smoother 4-speed. The look will be virtually the same, the driving experience a LOT better...

And by the way, all y'all better believe I'm getting this Texas "thang", Shiner has displaced Sierra Nevada and Yaengling as my all-time favorite beer!

So don't cut that floor. Don't you have a transmission hump from a later cruiser in the hoard you can use? That way if you ever want to return the 45 to 3 on the tree you will have the unmolested hump to put back in.

Not too hard. I curently have one in mine still since I pulled the PTO gear box off the TC. I have a dude waiting for it once I get around to pull it out. But I am sure you can find one, its from the magical 74" (3spd but with the 4spd input shaft spline). I understand most of the Canada 4spd TC's also have the PTO gear. Just trade a spacer and some beer $$ and you are set.

I will keep an eye out for your write up!

There's actually a shit load of ignitors that will work on a 2F. 22R Mini truck, any Toyota carburetted model ignitor, etc etc. I'm running a 85 Mini Truck setup which is plug and play with my '79 FJ40 distributor in my 75 FJ40. With a FJ60 distributor the harness is different but the wire colors are the same. I'm not sure what the mini truck market is like in Texas but up in Vermont and New Hampshire every third truck is a rusty ass Toyota pick up, which means there are TONS of them in junk yards. I bought three mini truck ignitor/coil combos for $30 from a place called Rathe's in Colchester Vermont two years ago. But then again they knew me pretty well because of my POS Volvo wagon.

Damn ........a Volvo wagon.........almost as bad as a Chevette.
I know there are lots of Ignitors that will work, but the closest yard to me that has any imports is 80 miles, and they price stuff out at 50% of list.

I think it's also one of those Vermont things, gotta live there to under stand. :flipoff2: (I hope I'm not giving Vermonters a bad name :flipoff2::flipoff2:

I thought it was a great car, almost as indestructable as a Cruiser. I sold it to a friend for $500 not expecting it to last another 2 months. 2 years later still going.

My NAPA guy, showed selling 4 over the last 2 years, I remember replacing a couple in my 20 years, Jacobs recomended it because he thought it was the most trouble free on the market, he also mentions the importance of grounding the Module, directly to the battery, most common cause of failure, according to him......
