I figure this forum would work best
I am making a new swing out tire carrier for my jeep and I do not feel like doing the traditional inverted "T" or "Y" carrier with studs and lug nuts.
Mainly because I am sick of lifting 37"+ tire and trying to align it with some fucking studs 4 feet off the ground :shaking: Its got 10lbs too much steel and could use a diet. That and the design is inherently weak as it puts a lot of stress on the mount.
This is the kind I am NOT doing:

I want to do a swing out cross bar but with a cradle for the tire and use a ratchet strap to hold it in place. This way I can just throw the tire in the cradle, ratchet it down and be good to go with no finesse needed

Problem is I cant find a good side picture of a spare while mounted in a desert race vehicle. Are you guys running side bars to keep the tire from flopping left/right? Or are you just having the tread supported and the ratchet strap is keeping it from moving? If you are having side bars how far up the sidewall are they to keep the tire in place?

nice but overkill

Thanks but I am looking for side/detail pictures of what desert racers use to hold spares that use a ratchet strap.
