Can I replace the rear main engine seal on a 77 3/4 ton chevy 4x4 with a 350 without taking the engine or tranny out? I read the chilton's manual and it says I just have to remove the oil pan, oil pump, flywheel cover, and the seal is right there. It says I don't have to remove the engine or tranny, have any of you done this? How hard is it to replace? Thanks

You also have to take off the rear main cap. It isn't that difficult, if you follow the directions. The best book I saw it described in was a chevy 350 overhaul manual.
Make sure you use the plastic install tool when sliding in the upper half of the seal. The egdes the the seal slides into are sharp, if you slice the seal, it will leak after you get it all back together, and guess what........
Yep, you have to do it again.:skull:
