whats the deal with non-residents registering their trailers in maine? what is the advantage, and if worth it, how do you go about this? trailer in question is a 12k equipment style trailer, just purchased brand new from a NY dealer.

You can do a 5 year registration for cheap money. I have been meaning to check it into it peticulars of it. , the last time I was at DMV, they could not offer any useful info, I need to call someone in Augusta in find out the details. The state allows it , that I know for sure.Just not sure how it benfits you. Does every dealer in NY reccomend this or what? Just about everyone I know from NY regsiters there trailer in Maine. My son races Karts, and one of the guys from Long Island has his enclosed trailer reg. in Maine. Is there somthing particullarly hard about registering a trailer in NY?

The idea is it's cheaper than registering the trailer in the owner's state. Some states charge obscene amounts to register trailers.

I prefer Michigan myself. They have permanant trailer plates that never have to be renewed. One of my buddies lived there most of his life before moving down to Ohio a couple years ago. So we just tag all our trailers at his brothers house

Maine might be cheaper yearly on registrations but nothing beats never having to register it again.

I registered a small "home made" boat trailer with these guys: http://www.mbi-trailers.com/
I'm sure it's slightly different for larger trailers but I just called them and they said all I needed was a letter saying I built the trailer and a little description. It was much easier than dealing with the people here at DMV asking for receipts, inspection, etc. Best of all it's better than going to DMV, waiting in line, only to get turned back because of a broken tail light or something stupid, then repeating.

This is my first post but this isn't spam. I can't post anywhere else because it's still a little over my head. Great site here, I'm learning a lot.

i currently have an email in with MBI, as they say they need titles for the trailers, but my little landscape trailer only has a bill of sale when bought new, and the new equipment trailer has a certificate of origin, not a title.

as far as the new trailer goes....take the certificate of origin to your local title office and they use it as evidence to issue to first actual title on your trailer. I did this when I bought my new gooseneck from a dealer in Michigan in 06

In Ohio, any trailer weighing 4000lbs or more requires a title to get tags. Anything 3999 and lower just needs a weigh slip and info on make, model and vin unless you list it as "homebuilt"

I have two trailers registered In Maine and my buddy has three. Way cheaper than NY and no yearly inspection hassle. Check out www.staabagency.com..

My 32' horse trailer has had a 5 year Maine plate on it for 2 years now and I went through MBI. BUT I was told by 2 friends of mine (ones a NY trooper the other a deputy) that it's illegal and you can get ticketed for improper registration. I haven't been hassled yet (knocks on wood) and have been to FL and back a several times as well as to Mass several times and all over NY with it plated that way.

I used Staab agency as posted above. No problems. You don't have to pay the sales tax (great when buying new) and as stated no worrying about yearly inspection. For a 10K rated car trailer, all I had to submit was a certified weight slip. Didn't have a title. Mines in NJ and my dad has 2 trailers in PA with Maine plates.

Never heard that it's illegal in any way. If so, there sure are a lot of illegal Maine plates, seems like 50% of the trailers I see are Maine.

I read on another forum that Staab was having trouble with not paying their taxes and were under investigation. MBI seems to be ok with Uncle Sam though.

They just said in NY state, If your a resident of NY and register it in another state you can get ticketed for improper registration or something along those lines. I haven't been stopped in 2 years with a Maine plate so I think maybe it's more of a if there in a bad mood or you piss them off them can write you for that. What ever the case it's way cheaper and I use it.

i have my paperwork in with MBI as we speak. ill see what happens. It is not illegal in NY, just frowned upon and gives a dickish cop more reason to "look into things".

cost was $175 for the reguired maine title, plus a 5 year registration. NY reg would have been probably $100ish/year, plus the inspections, which i never seem to have good luck with:shaking:

you could always say its a friends trailer. or register it in a family members name so that the name on the trailer regi and your driver licence isnt the same.

Any updates on this ? Do you get a title back or just a registration ? I need to apply for a title for a trailer that doesn't exist yet. ( home built ) wondering if anyone else has used them for this. Their web site say's only registration for any trailer over 3k EMPTY, no title ! That leaves out almost every 7-10k car hauler..

I'm sending off an e-mail to see what's up but maybe someone else has done it already can shed some light for the rest.... In Pa. it would cost me almost as much to get it titled, registered and inspected as it would to build it.

I reg'ed my trailer through MBI. I bought the trailer used and did title it in MD just in case I want to sell it later. I didn't want there to be any issues with a potential seller thinking something was fishy having a ME title.

Cost me $90 to reg it for 5 years and they sent me reg slip and a plate. Very simple easy process once they got my email the second time :p

everything went super-smooth with MBI. I got my plate in the mail, and a little while later a maine title. i couldnt be more pleased

Reg in NY for my small 6x12 utility trailer is now $38/year; up from about $20 in 2005 when i first bought it.

Maine reg for the 12k was $125/5 years or $25/yr. Last week i got a check in the mail from the state of maine, refunding $33, as reg fees went down:grinpimp:

as i understand, they will do the maine reg for trailers under 3k, but you dont need/receive back a maine title. they just register it in maine, no maine title needed.

Correct, my trailer is just an open deck car hauler and doesn't hit the 3k weight. They were happy to reg it, but wouldn't(couldn't?) title it.

im in NY also and my parents registered a 22-24ft camper and it cost them around $150 for a year plus inspection. when/if i get a car trailer im going for a main regi also.

so if you register it in maine you dont get a title back? how is that going to effect the resale value in NY?

i got a replacement maine title, and i also have the original NY title.

chances are a car trailer is not going meet the 3000lb unladen weight, therefore, it does not need a maine title, even though it can be registered there. clear as mud?

where in NY dopeass?

I'm in NJ. I asked them about re-selling my used trailer that I just registered in Maine. They told me that I could get a title in my name in my state and hold onto that for resale.

Just FYI, I did have to pay sales tax since I didn't pay tax when I bought it used. I didn't have to do this last time with Staab. Maybe that's why they were in trouble as stated above.
