: Smog Issues-How does this happen?
Amanda G 09-16-2002, 09:27 PM Okay, last week, took the EB for a pretest to determine what was needed to pass the biatch.
Rebuilt the carb, new distributor cap (broken risor) and she was running healthy.
This was the first test done today, PRETEST HERE IN WOODLAND. The exact same test as the next...I got pulled into a test only station, and the nearest one is in Davis, 10 minutes away, it drove straight there, and went straight on the test there.
WTF happened???
Notice the test times at the top.
The actual test:
What the hell is wrong with it?? Or the smog places.. :rolleyes:Passed Test (http://photos.yahoo.com/bc/cali_kahuna/vwp?.dir=/1977+Bronco1939+Ford&.src=ph&.dnm=SMOGPASS.jpg&.view=t&.done=http%3a//photos.yahoo.com/bc/cali_kahuna/lst%3f%26.dir=/1977%2bBronco1939%2bFord%26.src=ph%26.view=t)
Failed Test (http://photos.yahoo.com/bc/cali_kahuna/vwp?.dir=/1977+Bronco1939+Ford&.src=ph&.dnm=SMOGFAIL.jpg&.view=t&.done=http%3a//photos.yahoo.com/bc/cali_kahuna/lst%3f%26.dir=/1977%2bBronco1939%2bFord%26.src=ph%26.view=t)
Edit: I just realized those are REALLY hard to read....
Test One:
15 MPH HC was 160 Max is 199
25 MPH HC 81 165
15 MPH CO was .91 Max is 1.62
25 MPH CO .14 1.42
FALIED Test Two:
15 MPH HC was 172
25 MPH 115
15 MPH CO 3.20
25 MPH 1.21
WTF!!!!

Not for your carb probably but it's a place to start. I'm still looking for other resources.

fatkid 09-16-2002, 10:19 PM It's hard to find a dirty Smog guy, when you do there worth there weight in gold.
Amanda G 09-16-2002, 10:26 PM Going by the first test less than an HOUR before the actual, I shouldn't need a dirty smog guy. It passed fine. THen less than an hour later is a gross polluter?? WTF IS THAT!! I am getting it tested again tomorrow at the presmog, (the guy told us to after we called him-he was shocked it failed) if it passes then, I am taking the test back to the toehr place and telling them i'm challenging it. Their machine better be off cuz I dont want to deal with the BS.

Albino Man 09-16-2002, 11:06 PM I think the problem is you took it into Davis. He probably gets his real income from the communist hippies that pay him to fail smog tests on vehicles.

The pretest guy referred me there, they had passed a pickup he sent in this weekend too. Damn test onlys. :(
And yah, I agree, it is a hippie commie town. But hey, that's where I found the EB to begin with.
Albino Man 09-16-2002, 11:36 PM It can't be anything major. I have a '69 and my buddy owns a '74 with 110,000 miles and his smogs as good as his '89 chevy. On the other hand between my '69 E.B. and my P.S.D., I forgot what it's like to have to smog.:D
Lil Uzi 09-17-2002, 06:12 AM What year is the "EB" ?
Broncrick 09-17-2002, 08:13 AM It's a 1977......
Amanda G 09-17-2002, 08:34 AM Alternative...Anybody got a pre-smog title they want to sell me. :D

Sure I got a 1968 toyota title. Maybe it you title it as a toyota, it might actually work? ;) :p

This is why I said I'd never buy a FORD....She really does hate me. I get in it...batteries dead...I put it in gear...it dies....ANYONE else gets in it...it starts and runs great. Damn cold hearted biatch!
Chris-I'm serious! Check out your PNP's for some old junker and pull the vins for me.:D Big reward of beer for you! ;)
GloNDark 09-17-2002, 08:41 AM I know a guy who is parting one out. Not sure on the year though.

hehehe....wouldn't be the first time you've been involved in illegal activities chris!!! :innocent:
AH hell, I'm goin back to the pretest guy today, we'll see what happens. :(
welndmn 09-17-2002, 09:55 AM what i would guess what happened, is your CAT got cold, When it failed at the 3nd shop did it sit for a while until it was tested?
When you go back, Park in front of the bay and leave it running, Tell them you here, then go back sit inside the truck and hold it around 2,000 RPM's to keep it warm until they check it

I bet Marks right. Carbs are hard as hell on cats. I would just throw a 70.00 Catco cat from summit under it.
Amanda G 09-17-2002, 01:20 PM No, it ran to davis from here and sat running in front of the bay for 3 minutes, then went on the test. That is was is baffling me.

Kinda like those dirty tire guys that fix huge sidewall gashes:D
dieselcruiserhead 09-17-2002, 01:27 PM Just my opinion but I would be real weary of discussing items like this publically, you never know who might be watching. Feds, Cops, Customs could be watching or someone who works there might be into trucks. Especially lately as there's been trends towards "tracking criminals in chat rooms." For future reference I'd take it back channel, it's not safe but safer and a whole lot harder to track in the billions of emails sent each day, versus a chat room that's searchable and will stay there for a long long time.
Live Wire 09-17-2002, 09:48 PM Well, today my wife takes her 91 Geo Metro to the TEST ONLY station for her smog check. This was the 1st time we have ever had to go to the test only station. We always have her car pre-tested & it has never failed. Never even had any work done to it . Then last year it burnt a valve, so we had a valve job & timing belt done. Also had to replace the injector. Now today, they do a pretest & it ran so fawkin bad it would have been a gross poluter:flipoff: The low RPM readings were off the scale & the high RPM readings were close. Spend a bunch of money & now the thing runs dirty.WTF? Think we might be buying a new car:::(
Blame Canada 09-17-2002, 11:05 PM Hey Amanda,
Up here, it gets cold in the winter time, and we have to add METHYLHYDRATE (Basically, paint thinner) to our gas tanks to keep the fuel lines from freezing.
One of the side effects, is that it CLEANS UP the emmissions from dirty, to passable.
Also, just like up here, you'll have some minimum RPM settings for the curb idle.
Crank the idle up to the minimum, like say 3000 rpm at idle. That'll dilute most of the dirty pollutants.
Also, run the highest OCTANE fuel you can buy in the beast, and that should also clean up your emmissions.
High Octane Fuel
Methylhydrate
High Idle.
Keeps my '80 CJ passing every year (which expired two days ago)!!
Hope that helps.
Howdy 09-18-2002, 12:12 AM You probably should have had the guy you bought it from smog it for you. Isn't it the sellers responsability for the smog? I know the EB I just bought I made sure the guy smoged it for me. I didn't want to deal with the things you're going through right now by picking up someone elses problems. Didn't you say that you knew when you bought it that the engine was on its last legs? Maybe its time to drop in that FI 5.0

Yes and no. I wheeled and dealed with the guy for lower price if I smogged it. We did originally think the engine was going to need replacing soon...but guess what, the seals on the Carb were GONE and it needed work So I rebuilt that and threw on a new distributor cap and she runs TOTALLY GREAT! Everything looks good. I just heard also that Davis (where I took it and it failed) has adopted even HIGHER standards than the test only stations anywhere else, so I may not take it back to them at all. I think I'll go to Sac.
The cat is prolly the problem at this point. I talked to my stepdad some more (ex smog tech) and he suggested swapping one for the smog test. :D:D:D
I'll be sure to keep you all filled in. ;)
ChevyGal 09-18-2002, 03:16 PM Amanda if you need a smog only place there's a good one off of Hwy 99 and Calvine. It's called Smog-N-Go. Where I go and always pass...
Also I usually dump in some good ol' 91% rubbing alcohol you get at Wal-Mart. Usually about 1 liter (2 bottles of the alcohol) for every 15 gallons of gas. Works well for me! Good luck... :)
Amanda G 09-18-2002, 08:07 PM Okay. Diagnoses from the smog guy-(free of course ;) )
The floats in the carb are making the idle jump around...Rebuild doesn't cure that problem. I think I may pull the carb off the 289 in the '39 and get the bitch smogged. Just to get it done...Then put the old one back on till my now-broke ass can buy an edelbrock. :D
if your gonna buy a carberator get holley. ive seen some edlebrocks go bad and when they do they go real bad. for about $200 you get a very nice NEW carb.

Shows what you know about Cali smog laws:rolleyes:
Amanda G 09-19-2002, 08:12 PM Yah, from what I've seen, the Holley's are junk. I'd go quadrajet...but I dont' have 450 to spend on that...that's half my tires! :p So the piddly 2 barrel edelbrock will work for me.

No matter what deal is made the seller is still responsible for the smog, I checked into this a while ago with the DMV and was told even if you have a bill of sale or agreement on paper you can force the seller to comply to the smog rules here in KA...
Thats if one wanted to force the issue due to failing smog.

Yah but I wouldn't. I knew that it wouldn't smog when he sold it to me. I'm not gonna stick it to him. He was totally cool thru the whole sale, let me take it with just 1000 deposit...Waited for 2.5 weeks till my money got here..blah blah blah, he was super cool and I got it cheap so I won't stick it to him. It's not that big of a deal now that I know what it was. Just pissed me off that 50 minutes would cause it to fail like that.
Littlex 09-19-2002, 08:37 PM what is the rpm readings from the 15/mph and the 25mph tests?
compare the two pass fail tests, i have seen carb. engines that bogg down kick the power on and give the extra fuel.if it is a manual trans. it is to be run in 2nd gear for both speeds.if it a auto then it is put in drive for both speeds.
might be worth a look.
mike
ranger 09-19-2002, 09:29 PM If your address where you live in is Davis I doubt you will be able to take it to Sacramento for a smog., unless you go the referee station. I don't remember if Davis is in an enhanced smog area.
I know Vacaville is enhanced smog checkII. If you live in Vacaville you can't take you vessle to Fairfield, which is only Smog check 1.:skull:
so you cant even install green sticker items on your cars. that sucks, oh well.
