I'm having trouble figuring out why my Sammie won't start. (I've got another thread going on that.) I was wondering if anyone has used an aftermarket ignition, an if so, how did they set it up? It's a 90 EFI on a 1.3 8 valve.
I'm thinking my ignitor or coil might be bad, and it might be cheaper to buy an aftermarkrt system than just the coil or ignitor.
Anyone have any first hand experience with it?
Thanks!

i did a writeup on the msd a while back, it's linked in the faq.

Thanks LBS!! I do have a couple of questions though. What diode do you use? I see that you have MSD 6A in the pics. Do others work and which coil do you recomend? Thanks again!!

i burned up an accel supercoil (which was rated ok by msd) after a few thousand miles, so i recommend the msd high vibration blaster coil. as far as diodes, it doesn't take much. the pulse from the distributor needs to go to both the msd and the ecm, so putting a diode in there is just a way to prevent any backfeed from the parallel electronics. a 1-amp barrel diode is fine. as far as other ignition boxes go, you can run any efi wth a distributor on an aftermarket ignition. you just have to wire the distributor signal or tach signal to the ecm so it knows what rpm the engine is running at. remove everything from the coil, and let the ign module control it. it is pretty straightforward. sometime in the near future, i will be switching over to a crank trigger and controlling the msd with a megasquirt-II... that'll be a whole other writeup. you really can't go wrong with a 6A ign box.
