they dont call 'em "Exploders" for nothing:laughing:

seriously tho, my mom had one and had no big probs but shes almost 70 now. good car to get around town when its snowing... would not recommend as a wheeler. Look under there.. you'll see lots of stuff hanging low that you dont want to damage.

FYI hers was exceptionally clean, I sold it for her (she bought a new Exlporer) for $3800 last winter, most around Sacramento were in the $2000-3000 range.

The older ones ('91-'94) are good offroaders, but the later ones with the torsion bar IFS aren't as desirable for wheeling.
You could do a SAS on it though and turn it into a good truck.

Like urjb said, there is a lot of crap that hangs down pretty low under any year Explorer (gas tank, exhaust, rear suspension, frame, etc). Plan on making some extra skidplates for stuff.

My family has owned a handfull of them, for transportation they are hard to beat. The OHV 4.0s have funky timing chain tensioners that can make alot of noise, if you replace them it can run $400 for parts alone IIRC. The trannys are ok, the tcases have an inherant problem that cause them to nuetral out, you can't find used ones, but I have a $10 fix for it. My moms 97 probably has 175k, still running strong, and she beats the everliving shit out of her cars. I had a 5.0 AWD 97, that I never should have sold:shaking:.

Actually its the OHC that has the timing chain issue. For anything Ford Explorer related goto explorer4x4.com and check out the message board. You will find answers to any question or problem you will ever have.

BTW: I'm on my 2nd Explorer. Had a 92 that I DD and wheeled the piss out of. Basically ran it into the ground at 235K. My current DD is a '96 with 217K and it is still running strong and getting 18mpg.

Yep, that's how you do 'em. You'll find a bunch of info on www.explorerforum.com and www.therangerstation.com if you wanna go this route.
