Any of you Izuzu guys know when (or if) someone plans on offering 4.88's for the Dana/Izuzu 44? If they're already available, where can I get me some?

Thanks.

you can run any standard D44 4.88 r&p......BUT

here's the deal, Isuzu 44's are stock w. a thicker ring gear on a higher ratio carrier. Meaning....a thicker 4.30 ring gear comes on a 3.92 and down carrier.

so to run a standard 4.88 D44 ring and pinion just swap to the right ratio carrier as you would on any other 44.

i personally run a full carrier locker...Detroit w/ a 5.38 R&P in a rear 44 from a 94 Rodeo.

kind of confusing, but i think that was clear.

The factory also offered 4.77s (in the the thick size) which depending on your app, may be close enough.

ST,

Okay, I'm not bustin' balls here, I just need to know if I can do this before I spend any cash.

The Bible says 44 carrier breaks are as follows:
3.73 and down
3.92 and up

If I understand you correctly, you're sayin' I can use a 3.92 and up carrier with a standard 4.88 gear set and have no issues? There is nothing else weird about the Izuzu 44?

Thanks again for the help.

that is correct. the isuzu gearset has a thick ring gear so you have to use the 3.73 carrier for the isuzu gears, if your usin standard gears you go by the standard carrier break.

Thats what it means. Isuzu just used thicker ring gears stock. All
standard D44 rules apply to the axle, because it is a D44:D

You know I had to ask. What I'm reading here today is what I always thought, then.................

A few weeks ago I called West Coast Diff. and asked the fella there if they could get 4.88s in a Rodeo 44. I'm certain I was clear as to what I wanted, if not the first time at least the second or third time I asked. Each time he told me the same thing....can't happen. So I ask if there is anyone else in the area who can do it (it, being installing 4.88s in a Rodeo 44) and he tells me no. Maybe I talked to the wrong guy on the wrong day.... but it threw me for a loop.

Anyway that's the story behind all the questions.

I appreciate the straight scoop.

I appreciate the straight scoop. I had the same questions when I planned on installing it in the jeep. Its a weird thing that nobody seen before. Toyota does the same thing with their 8", using thicker ring gears for the V-6, but Dana just supplied a high ratio carrier to fit the thicker gear. West coast diff has never seen a isuzu 44 before, they had the same issue with the aluminum center 44 in the grand waggoneers, until they started building them. I buy all my parts from them anyway

Sorry man, no Trooper EVER came with a D44, They have had Isuzu 12 bolt(stronger than a D44) axles since 86. Prior was an Isuzu 10-bolt. The Rodeo is a different story. IIRC, the 92-93 Rodeo has the GM12 bolt rear axle.
94+ Rodeo has the D44 with 6 on 5.5 lug pattern and disc brakes.
Along with the 98+ Amigo, same axle.

V6, Auto tranny has 4.10
V6, Manual tranny has 4.30
4 Cyl, any tranny has 4.77
