: Name those axles!!

Sorry, no pictures!

I found an '86 Dodge 3/4 ton pickup, and I am wondering if both of the axles are D60s. It has a 360 engine, and the sign on the window said "4speed with granny". They want $500 for the whole sheebang.

I am pretty sure that the rear is a D60, but is it a desirable one? What is the front? It appears to be a different axle than the rear - is it a 44?

Sorry, but I am not too good at identifying anything but Toyota parts!

Thanks for the help!

I didn't remember to look at the number of lugs! Doh!

The rear axle looks larger than the front, and the 3rd housings on the driveshaft side look different. Would the actual 3rd housing look different on a front vs. a rear?

60's dont have 3rd members...if it had 60's front and rear then the center sectons (the diff) would look the same-yes

i am guessing it is not a 60 front.

you will know a 60 front when you see one...it will be like 3 times bigger than your yota front :flipoff2: :flipoff2:

so keep on looking.

Look for kingpin caps. An '86 Dodge 3/4T would have a kingpin 60 front, if it has a 60 front at all. Basically, look down on where the kingpins are, and if it has a four-bolt square-lookin' pattern, it's a 60 front. There are no Dodge kingpin D44's that I'm aware of, and also no open-knuckle kingpin D44's that I've seen.

Being an '86, if it has ball joints at all, it's not a 60... ball joints = don't buy it.

As for the rear... it's probably a single-wheel D70. If the diff covers appear to match front to rear, but there's casting hangin' off the cover flange (the cover is smaller than the flange), it's a 70 rear.

Quick redneck axle ID, anyway. Chances are, it's a steal at $500... based on what you've said, I'd be inclined to take it. It is possible (depending on axle ratios) that the 60 front is a 61, which is a PITA to put decent gears in, but possible. The 70, AFAIK, is a constant thing, most recent D70's are the same internally.

Does anyone have a closeup of what the flat top / kingpin knuckles look like?

I am thinking this is not it. There was only one big nut on the top if I recall.

Think "Toyota" design with 4 bolts holding a top plate (sometimes a cap w/ grease fitting, sometimes short steering arm).

'tis a 44 :-(

Next question....

What year/model of Dodge DOES have D60s front and rear? I searched a week or so ago and saw something about '92ish axles.... was it 1 ton trucks only?

Thanks for all of the help!

Now at least I know what I need to be looking for at the boneyard.

You should hang out in the Ford section, we've a few open-knuckle kingping axle pics.

I could be wrong, but I think the Fords have the diffs on the wrong side?

I am looking for one with a diff on the passenger side.
