I did a search and did not find much on the 5.4 Ford. I'm looking at a 2009
F350 CC with a 5.4. and an automatic. I know its not my old 7.3 in the 2001 f350 but it should be alright? I tow a GN with a CJ or a M715

We used an f250 with a 5.4 to tow a 19ft toyhauler (5000 lbs) about 300 miles...and it was fine as long as we were on flat ground.
As soon as we hit a cigarette butt in the road or a dragon fly smashed on the window our momentum dropped so bad we might as well have been driving up Mount Everest.
I do believe this was a pre 3 valve 5.4 though, so I don't know if the 03+ 5.4's are better.

no you won't be happy having towed 7k beind a 5.4 auto in an '08 F250 in I found that it did not have the power to maintain speed (70-75) over anything (highway overpasses lead to gear drops) even would out to no end and the gas mileage when towing was horrid (~7mpg)

I would keep that diesel 10x over.
My old man had a dually F-350 with a 5.4L in it. It was always loaded down to about 11K since day one. It never saw above 8-9mpg. Even without towing anything it would down shift at a .0001 percent grade and stay at about 4 grand or higher until it was a level ground or going down hill. Another buddy had the same setup but a stake body. Same thing. His company thought they would save money and get a gas motor. They got rid of it in a little over a year. And went back to all diesels and haven't looked back.
Millage will be bad.
Power is lacking.
You will just get annoyed and want your diesel back.

All good points. The truck will be empty 80% of the time. The next 10% will be GN about 3000# the CJ 4000#. The real load will be the GN 3000# and the M715 6500#

Even unloaded it will be a dog. That is a heavy truck. You will never see the millage you get now with your 7.3.

Just keep yer 01 unless you love being depressed and hating life. I have a 05 6.NO and wouldnt go back to gas. I would just put some of the $$ you were going to spend on the 09 into the 7.3. Here is a good start. http://www.elitedieseleng.com/73.htm

I would suggest that you buy a cheap gun so you can shoot yourself the first time you tow 7k with it.

Fuck, those things can't get out of their own way in a 1/2 ton.

i have a 5.4 in a 2001 1/2 ton. It does fine. Good reliable motor. and yes, it can "get out of it's own way". I usually tow around 5-6k and it does fine with that load. have towed around 8k on a couple of occasions, and it did it, but it wasn't happy.
How bad can they be @ 300hp/365tq? Im considering it in a f250 (ext cab, short box, 4x4, man trans), that or the v10.

The problem is where the power is. If you are ok with pulling over 4000 RPMs all day then go for it.

Shit my wife 07 f150 s/crew 5.4/auto. With just my 2800pd car hauler was a scary fucking ride with just a hours drive. I dropped it off and drive home that night and brought my 01/24v/2500 back the next day. No way it was going to hold the trailer with a load of firewood.
But my father-in-law with same truck but 05 a liter carhaul and his big heavy drag car. They tow with it all the time. But he's one of guys that pull at 55 or 60mph.And with the od off and srceaming rpm's.
And drive by wire sucks.
Are best mileage is 16mpg and it averages 13 to 14mpg with a f150 highway. We have to make 2 more payment and we can break even and were trading it in.
