I took my 79 Bronco with the 400M in for an emission test in New Mexico and it failed because of air fuel mixture, no cats, and no "air injection system". What is this and how can I fix it? I called ford and they have an air pump for $350, but there has to be a better way. Can I possibly get it online cheaper or get around that part all together? Thanks for any ideas

My truck failed emissions because of a bad air fuel mixture, no cats, and the "air injection system". My question is what is the air injection system and how do I fix it CHEAP!! I called ford and they want $300 for the little air pump that pushes air into the exhaust before the cats to make them more productive. How can I get around this crap?

You have to bribe a Smog tech to pass it. This IS ILLEGAL.

You have three choices:

1) Sell it now.

2) Bribe someone.

3) Learn to fix what you own.

That is all

Air injection pushes fresh air into the exhaust manifolds. Some vehicles are required to have air injected into each manifold runner others only one. Chaepst way to fix it is grab the parts from the junk yard, second cheapest is pep boys. You also need to have cats welded on and I am guessing that you need to lean your mixture some. After all that you can worry about what cam the guy put in it.
