I'm having a problem w/ my 700r4 & thought maybe you could help since you work at a tranny company. I'm getting a pretty loud chattering at speeds above 30mph when coasting. its been getting progressivly worse. I thought it was the split t-case so I rebuilt it, but it made no difference & there was nothing noticibly wrong inside that could be cuasing this.
I'm also getting a loud vibration & noise when idling in gear w/ the a/c or york on (they drop the rpms by about 50 -100) (it also occurs sometimes w/ the tranny in park also). the noise is definately coming from the torque converter/ flex plate area but there is nothing noticable from looking at them. last night I took the t/c flexplate cover off to see if I could duplicate the noise but it never got very loud. I put the truck in gear gave it lots of throttle w/ the brakes pressed & I got a rattling noise (like a spray rattle can) coming from the flex plate area. Does this sound like a bad torque converter? what about tranny? could it be the motor?
This thing has been frustrating the hell out of me!!! so any help you could give me would be GREATLY apreciated

sounds to me like the flexplate is cracked around the crank bolt holes. pretty cheap to fix, but a lot of labor.
normally a cracked flexplate will make the most noise when the engine is at it's lowest rpms; running the roughest. noise will go away at higher rpms.
if you need a flexplate, i can probably get one to you for $40 including shipping, but i need to know engine displacement and year. the safest bet is to pull the old flexplate so you can measure the diameter and see if there are any weights on it.

i seriously doubt that you have a tranny problem, unless you picked up a what you thought was a chick at bar:flipoff2: !
the symptoms you have described are classic signs of a cracked flexplate.
hope that helps. georg

cool, i'm glad to hear that its something simple like that. I guess I'll have to pull that tranny. I did see one weight on the flex plate. the engine is a 93 tbi350. When I get the flex plate out I'll let you know. Thanks for the reply!!!

BTW, I didn't get that tranny joke :flipoff2: :D

one other thing... can I get your # so I can call you when I get it out. email me @ corey@pswcarchitects.com

tranny as in transvestite:flipoff2:

anyhow, your flexplate should be roughly 14.25 inches in diameter with one horse shoe shaped weight on it. call me at work after you pull it out 800-991-0117 georg
or home 209-955-1217 (there right now)
