hey this is mitchells wife so i dont want anyone to think he's an idiot asking these questions. I am thinking about buying a 93 range rover. It appears to be stock,it has the 4.2 and whatever that entails. Is there anything I need to know when I go test drive it tomorrow, like what to look for good or bad. There asking 1200.00. I've had a 96 disco before loved it when i wasn't in a hurry lol,so any help would be great.
thanks carol

Check to see if it has air suspension, the air bags/hoses/compressor leak eventually and can be costly to repair. A coil spring swap can be done to fix this, probably about $1000 at an independent shop.
Chances are, it could use head gaskets if they havent been replaced recently or more important, properly. If the head gaskets are bad, you will see coolant leaking from the front or back of the engine block. This will cost somewhere around $800 at an independent shop.
Then it's just the basics, brakes, steering, A/C, lights etc.

Free Beer-stick to slinging beer because you are wrong on both of the above points.
The air to coil conversion is a lot less expensive than the P38s. 5.5 hours labor worst case and some parts.
Head gaskets on the older trucks are not anywhere near the problem they are on the later model trucks and I wouldn't let anyone near my truck if they thought they could do a head job for only $800 as that's barely enough to cover the parts and machine work. I flat rate that job for $2K and can't keep up.
Things to look for on a '93 LWB:
Rust in footwells where the front mud flaps bolt on.
Rust at lower liftgate, all the way across the back. Water that leaks in through the upper liftgate pools here and they rust out badly.
The transfer cases can have problems with worn out chains, seized or free-wheeling viscous coupler.
Swivel balls leak and the CV joints grenade.
Heater fan blower motors and resistors fail. If it only works on high, it's most likely the resistors. If it screams at all speeds, it's the blower motor.
By this time, the radiator is probably ready to be replaced.
Good luck, you know you want to be back in the cult!
Cheers,
PT

i went and drove the beast yesturday its as slow as my 96 disco was lol. Over all the body and interior are in good shape, the seat control on the driver side is missing, the back wndow doesn't lock, good news no rust anywhere. Its missing the front drive shaft so dont know about the diff. but it does go into low. It has been converted to coilspring already, all the air system is still there except for the air bags which have been replaced with ome.The engine looks normal just alot goin on in there, it leaks oil around the oil filter assembly, doesnt over heat, power steering leaks. They were asking 1200.00 I offered 800.00 they said they would take 900.00 haven't decided yet need to find out how much the drive shaft is gonna cost and the control for the seat(trivial i know lol).

If the front prop has been disconnected I would suspect that the viscous coupling on the transfer case had seized.
Did they say why it was disconnected?

The seat switch may well be a LOT more expensive than a used front driveshaft.
Front driveshaft missing on an RRC can mean a lot of things and none of them good.
I'd say that $800 is too much for that truck. I have bought three this summer for barely more than that combined.
Consider that you'll probably want to put an LT-230 into if the existing T-case is toasted, then you'll need a Disco or early RRC front driveshaft.
Upper liftgates are getting more and more hard to find and more expensive.
I love the LWB but $800 seems a lot when the market is as depressed as it is now.
