: Duramax Diesel in TJ?
TeraFlexd40TJ 09-17-2002, 04:49 PM Ive done a LT-1 in a YJ, a 360 in a CJ, but its time to move onto the next project. Heres my idea.....
Jeep TJ with..
Duramax 6.6L Diesel V-8
Allison 1000-Series Tranny
Dana 60 Front and Rear
Somewhere around 8" lift
Has anyone done a Duramax swap into a TJ (or anything else for that matter)? if so, can anyone give me any ideas or feedback on this? Thanks.

ROCK HUGGER 09-17-2002, 05:30 PM There is a shop in CA doing one in a Cruiser. The motor, trany, transfercase combo is long.
B.A.R.K 09-17-2002, 05:42 PM dont those huge diesels way over 1000 lbs, that sure is heavy for an engine in a small vehicle:eek: but hey that is an A$$ load of tourque, i would like to know how it goes
Oxjockey 09-17-2002, 05:59 PM If you have anything resembling an emissions law, it's not worth it.
It's not really worth it from many other perspectives, too, but hey...

wrookie 09-17-2002, 06:08 PM Pretty heavy, long combo for a TJ and I would imagine an expensive swap....
Good luck and if you do it, we want to see the pics
Sharp 09-17-2002, 06:19 PM if it's gonna work a extended wheelbase may be in order too!
TeraFlexd40TJ 09-17-2002, 07:15 PM Emissions Laws?? heck, the YJ dosent even have a speedo....any kinds of emissions equipment, its a rolling ticket....who cares, thats part of the fun aint it?
TJ Fan 09-17-2002, 08:27 PM I was a trainer for GM on the DuraMax intro. It is a great engine made by Isuzu with Bosch Injection and Delphi Controls. This is just stage I of the factory version...stronger ones to come:D That combo is long and that tranny is large. The size of that tranny kept it out of the other rigs(Sub) because of the tranny hull requirements. Quite a few black boxes with that package also.
Would be a sweet deal though....runs like a gas with the power od an oil burner.
hightechredneck 09-17-2002, 08:56 PM I heard that the motors run over $15,000 from the dealer  Any confirmation of the price?

mjs408 09-18-2002, 07:26 AM why not a 12 valuve cummins, they can be had cheaper, tougher than hell and can be souped up to make crazy amounts of power, the nv4500 will bolt up............
nobody20 09-18-2002, 07:46 AM I know a guy that swapped an earlier Chevy V-8 diesel into a CJ. Had cooling problems and he hated all the added weight. He took it out and put in a SBC.
TJ Fan 09-18-2002, 08:11 AM They are expensive, but no one should be looking to replace one for awhile. They have been durability tested to 200k miles. Your best bet would be to get a salvage vehicle. There is a lot of harnesses and PCM's that go with the deal. The engine is completely run by electronics, ie; fuel injectors that take 96v dc to fire, etc. As far as the size and power issue, the dmax is a more compact package and has lots of potential for horsepwer.
"Fastest Diesel Ever: Evan Evans, Duramax Diesel racer and spokesperson for GM Mobility Program, topped the Peak in his hand-controlled, production Duramax Diesel 6600 V8 GMC Sierra, at 13:34.63. Evans' time was a new record for diesels, beating all previous diesel cars and trucks at the Peak. This was this production-Diesel's first-ever race. Evans' time was the fastest truck in his class, finishing fourth overall in High Performance Showroom Stock."
Weezer 09-18-2002, 08:26 AM I can allready hear the axle shafts breaking under all that weight:flipoff2:

"Should" is the key word here. I've heard of at least 1 that was blown up by operator error... someone poured diesel down the intake after running the tank dry, trying to get it started. I don't know if it just hydro'd the motor or what, but the lowest price he was quoted for a replacement was $17,500.
Heck, the injectors are 3x the price of a PSD injector at around $600 each.
Good luck!
TJTRUBL 09-18-2002, 01:53 PM Not sure how large the engine is but just fitting the small block into my TJ was kinda tight and put a decent tranny behind it (I'm running an sm 465 ) and you WILL have to do some floor pan mods big time. Hell the shifter tower for my tranny sticks up into the bottom of my dash;)
Dave (Woud like to see if if you do it though)
Jeepmangled87 09-18-2002, 09:31 PM This swap would be kick ass, If you got the money it can be done, It may require lots of sheet metal mods, and extended wheel base, but it would be one hell of a rig. Oh and for a rear axle, Id go 14 bolt, or 70, skip the 60 rear or it will break.:D
scrudeman 08-08-2010, 10:00 PM dont those huge diesels way over 1000 lbs, that sure is heavy for an engine in a small vehicle:eek: but hey that is an A$$ load of tourque, i would like to know how it goes
200lbs heavier than a similarily equipped 6.0l gmc..... the tranny is huge though
04rubitj 08-09-2010, 05:08 AM the dirty max weighs around 850 pounds, and the atc 1000 allison weighs bout 500
ckato4477 08-09-2010, 05:22 AM i bet it weighs a good deal more than 850 pounds...a cummins 4bt weighs in at a little under 800, the 6bt weighs a little more than 1100 pounds.....the duramax has to weight atleast 1000 pounds.
