: my driveway build

jackson76550

well my old rig had a bit of a power steering leak......and a driveshaft malfunction the last time out, so it was time to fix things up :D
http://i900.photobucket.com/albums/ac203/timmayjeep/Picture709.jpg

all of this work has been done in my driveway..... my garage is basically a toolbox, and my bender is a few blocks away on a slab in my parents back yard :homer: so the tube bending process was a pain....

this was one of the last trips out.....it had a good life
http://i900.photobucket.com/albums/ac203/timmayjeep/Picture553.jpg
everything else is just the same as all the other yj builds......
60/14 bolt
turbo 400
203/205 with lowmax
42's
you know..the usuall

this is the best i could come up with for outboarding the springs.....keeps the ride height and pinion angle pretty reasonable
http://i900.photobucket.com/albums/ac203/timmayjeep/Picture797.jpg

rear frame section
http://i900.photobucket.com/albums/ac203/timmayjeep/Picture766.jpg
started bending a bit of tube
http://i900.photobucket.com/albums/ac203/timmayjeep/Picture768.jpg

http://i900.photobucket.com/albums/ac203/timmayjeep/Picture790.jpg
at this point maybe you can see why the old rig got retired......
http://i900.photobucket.com/albums/ac203/timmayjeep/Picture803.jpg
lucky for me it was an organ donor
ive never really found a way to tie in the a pillar......so just a simple one will do
http://i900.photobucket.com/albums/ac203/timmayjeep/Picture782.jpg
so this is where planning ahead for the upper link frame mounts would pay off.....but i think it will work just fine.
http://i900.photobucket.com/albums/ac203/timmayjeep/Picture800.jpg
starting to look like something now
http://i900.photobucket.com/albums/ac203/timmayjeep/Picture801.jpg
http://i900.photobucket.com/albums/ac203/timmayjeep/Picture795.jpg

jackson76550
08-30-2009, 09:00 PM
the rear is close to what i think ride height is going to be.....the rest of it should be about an inch lower than the grey one.
http://i163.photobucket.com/albums/t311/jackson76550/Picture811.jpg
at this point the previous rig is looking pretty lame.....

pretty simple shock mount, supported from the bottom so hopefully it wont peel off of there
http://i900.photobucket.com/albums/ac203/timmayjeep/Picture820.jpg

i really didnt want to cut too much out of the floor..... just no room for those heavy ass cases that tried to kill me when i was putting them in with a floor jack :homer:

here you can see my custom dash......going to have a spot for some gauges and an ignition switch....but thats it, nice and simple

ride height is getting down where i like it with a few more pounds added

jackson76550

whats the height from the ground to the top of the cage or top of windsheild(highest point) seeing if a build like this will allow me to run 42's and still fit int the garage

09-06-2009, 07:04 PM
like it, but why leaves in the front still?

jackson76550
09-06-2009, 07:38 PM
in my opinion leaf springs make for a stable rig without getting too complicated or expensive. expensive being the key word right now. the old rig flexed just enough, and the front end stayed down when it got steep without the aid of a suckdown winch...... which is the only thing i dont like about rigs that are linked in the front

but give it a year and im sure those springs will be in the shed. but for now im keeping this build simple so i can get back out on the trail before winter hits and it gets down in the 60's :D

threw a seat in it.... im 6' and have at least 6" above my head when sitting in this thing, nice and low. i like it
http://i900.photobucket.com/albums/ac203/timmayjeep/Picture832.jpg
one of the last times i wheeled the grey jeep and i was winching out of a situation, i noticed the dash moving away from the cage when started to winch, so i added this to try and stiffin things up a bit. goes through the firewall and ties into the cage.
http://i900.photobucket.com/albums/ac203/timmayjeep/Picture831.jpg
and i think it will hold some shocks. wouldnt take much to mount some coilovers or airshocks on it in the future
http://i900.photobucket.com/albums/ac203/timmayjeep/Picture834.jpg
this was from the previous "build" but id recomend anyone who has a 14 bolt to take the time to make it a 13 bolt. well worth it. i plated the bottom with 1/2" and it has about an 1/8" between the 4.56 ring gear and the plate. i have drug this across about every rock at katemcy with no issues. the leak is from the pinion seal.

also notice the ballistic diff cover, apparently the welder on duty was having a bad day when he stuck the skull on there. i left it like that for some character

UCTJ
09-06-2009, 08:34 PM

Did you turn down the ring gear at all? How much clearance did you gain after plating it. I am debating having mine turned down vs leaving it 10.5" and plating vs just grinding down the lip.

Looking good, love the dash:D

Looks like you have tested out the cover pretty well. Ever had any issues with leaking?

jackson76550
09-07-2009, 06:17 PM
not from the cover or the plate on bottom. i winched it down a rock about 30 feet with the rear tires not even touching the ground and thought for sure it would have peeled off or something.....but no issues. and im no professional welder

ive always had hell keeping all the bolts tight on my tranfer cases and mounts......i always blamed my non balanced front driveshaft. time will tell if i was right.

jess at high angle driveline ( onetoncv on here) came up with this ......and it took less than a week to get to my door. VERY impressed with it, from the price to the beefcake slip material......holy crap! it was even better than i expected. and for a couple hunded bucks less than any other place ive found.

I love what you did on the rear shackle mounts. I wish I saw your work before I did mine. It would have given me more balls to do something similar rather than the cop-out I did. The only difference is my shackles would have required an inch or two more offset to the outside. that would be a little more tricky in the reinforcement of the frame but not impossible. The fact that the front shackles on my rig are limiting how low I can get the stance is killing me. I might be cutting mine apart soon after finishing it just to do something like what you did.

well the rain has been great......but it makes it hard to go outside and use power tools....and weld...in comfort at least ..so i didnt get near as much done as i wanted to this weekend. got the skidplate done, shifters mounted and worked on the boatsides.
http://i900.photobucket.com/albums/ac203/timmayjeep/Picture851.jpg
i laid a bit of sheetmetal on top between the two tubes to kinda show my plan for a step.....or whatever it is. it will have a few dimpled holes but nothing too fancy
http://i900.photobucket.com/albums/ac203/timmayjeep/Picture849.jpg
need to cap off the back somehow. the boatside is 1/8th" and it has 1.5" .120 wall square tube along the bottom and the supports to the frame. tried to make it semi beefy without going too heavy. i expect the plate will dent.....but i made sure it could be replaced in the future.
not the best boatsides ive ever seen as far as clearance goes......but they should work out

going to hit the scales sometime this week to see what it weighs.....any ideas?

It looks like you can cut a little more out of the tunnel and remove the t-cases through the door opening with an engine hoist. Much easier and safer than trying to do it with a floor jack. You can always make a new tunnel to cover it all up.

09-22-2009, 06:36 PM
well i got it done enough for a little shakedown run......the only two problems were being a little low on trans fluid and fuel. :shaking: one thing i really like is that i can see all 4 tires, the rear diff and both rear links. so when it gets hung up.....i dont have to ask for help.

finished up the boatsides
http://i900.photobucket.com/albums/ac203/timmayjeep/Picture881.jpg
got to test them out a bit.....didnt even fall off.... a proud moment :D
came up with a skidplate and an exit for the exhaust
http://i900.photobucket.com/albums/ac203/timmayjeep/Picture879.jpg
the belly is 20" at the lowest point and its a pretty low slung rig. but thats actually better than the previous model
you can kinda see the rear storage and ummmm....lightweight dash
http://i900.photobucket.com/albums/ac203/timmayjeep/Picture871.jpg
ony person i could get to go wheeling with me was doug......which hurt my self esteem a bit.....but bigger tires and a few hundred more horsepower can do that to a person
http://i900.photobucket.com/albums/ac203/timmayjeep/Picture876.jpg

it feels REALLY stable when things get steep, which i know is gonna get me in trouble.......almost defies gravity :flipoff2:

Great work on the boatsides. Im trying to do alot of what you did there with the boatsides, but I will be dovetailing my tub instead of backhalfing it all.

Could ya snap a few pics or explain how the boatsides meet up with the tub and how close you get them to the body mounts?

What did you do with the floor of the tub? Welded to the boatsides?

jackson76550
09-24-2009, 05:56 AM
yeah im gonna check out the new place......try to run the race. should be a good time either way.

boatsides.....
ill try and get some pics, basically there is some 1.5" suare tube that runs down the length of the bottom with supports going to the frame every foot or so that are even with the bottom of the body mounts. the top is welded to the cage. i left a 1" gap at the floor of the tub.....which cant even be seen... so i can clean everything out with a waterhose

bit of an update. rig has been working great! havent even rolled it :D
its crazy stable and for low speed stuff i could only really complain about front axle wrap. but for anything half fast and bumpy.....it just sucks.

as soon as i finished this thing a lot of my wheeling buddies had been getting into the semi local races and it looks like a blast..... i wanted in! the class im interested in requires a stock frame to the rear of the seat and an oem appearance..... thats basically the only rules. i think i can make it work out

plans are to have kind of a dual purpose rig....it definately wont be a racer but id like to be able to try a little.

add bit of tube work

3 link front

new and improved shocks front and rear

hmmmm.....guess that was my only goal at this point

the a pillar always bugged me on this thing.....thought the bend was to high.... so i fixed that
http://i900.photobucket.com/albums/ac203/timmayjeep/Picture2021.jpg
i sleeved the tube where i cut it and filed it down smooth.....think block sanding after body work.... only much less fun. but now you cant see where it was cut

heres the front at full bump

had to notch the drivers side to get the bolt in
http://i900.photobucket.com/albums/ac203/timmayjeep/Picture2070.jpg
and the budget buster! had to wait a whole 3 days after i ordered the oris

so now all i really need to be competitive is.......better tires, more power...few driving lessons......more money

Your jeep looks very cool. I like the look and the stance of it. Great job. And by the way...you welds kick a$$.

Really interested to hear what you think of the ORI's. I wont get my rig put together for another month or so. I have 4- 14" ORI's awaiting instalation.
Rig looks really good.

i have driven it around some. and im already impressed with the oris. im pretty certain i could do do-nuts on dry pavement with just a hint of body roll... :D but at the same time its a smooth ride. which is great.... because i had to sell a few things to afford them :homer:

:D
just got back from a race this weekend with the new motor. its pretty fast. even faster with the nitrous :flipoff2: hopefully some pictures surface. ruined a tire, and broke all the bolts off the left drive flange (dodge hubs)

been so busy i havent had much seat time with it, did some shock tuning after the race which helped a ton. need to get the idle up a bit to help with steering assist at idle and a few misc. issues. but other than that it has been taking a beating. the oris have continued to be awesome.

what kind of nos kit are you using. it sounds like you have a nuff power

you can never have enough power. I absolutely love my nitrous. :D running a 100 hp wet shot? i know guys that run 200 hp wet shots on stock 5.3 with no issues.

funny story about nitrous. on the previous motor (305) we basically zip tied a bottle to the cage and wired a handheld button. the jets installed were somewhere in the range of oh.......200 hp  really kinda just wanted to kill that old motor but ran out of nitrous......the 305 lives on. it was a lot of fun and that thing made serious power on the bottle

even tried widowmaker at trees on the bottle

http://i900.photobucket.com/albums/ac203/timmayjeep/Picture2132.jpg

its a nitrous express wet kit. for the first run out i just have a little ol 70 shot on it. it doesnt make huge difference....but you can definately tell its faster. so the bigger pills will go in very soon :D

i havent needed it on the trail yet......just for goofing off and drag racing at this point.

you can kinda see it in this pic. along with my upper radiator hose :homer:
http://i900.photobucket.com/albums/ac203/timmayjeep/Picture2193.jpg

the engine is a few inches further forward than i like......basically to have decent driveline lengths with the doubler. it was a pain to get it all to fit. so i think the 203 box will go away here in the near future.

43" sx's showed up today..... nasty looking tires. id say almost 3" taller than my 42" iroks......the iroks are well worn.

i kinda just felt like rubbing it in.......all the cool rigs here make me jealous. your turn! :flipoff2:
