I need to weld on the knuckles of my ford 60 and on the Pumpkin where the spring pad is.

I heard everything works from the wire feed to 7018 (i think) to nickel rod. Any 'real' welders got the scoop on this?

if you are welding on the axle tube where the sring perch is, the wire feed will work jsut fine. as for the cast in pad on the pumpkin and the knuckle, I would preheat with a rosebud (regular cutting tip will work, just take a lot longer) and then use a good high nickle content rod, weave just a little to avoid any undercut at the foot of the weld, and then post heat, gradually reducing the heat over about 15-30 minute period for optimal strength. should be fine........

I heard somewhere that you can use sand to slow the cooling process. If that is true do you still have to reheat the new weld then cover in sand?

I've been welding all that stuff with a mig for a few years with no problems. I always pre-heat to 400-450deg. and test it with a temp. crayon. When I'm welding on something like a empty axle housing, I plug the tubes with fiberglass insul. and old leather gloves and blow a salamander heater directly into it, while I heat the outside with a torch, after I'm done welding, I heat it up again if necessary and wire some old f.glass house insul. around it... Last time when I pulled the insul off 4 or 5 hrs. later, I fried myself by touching the damn thing...still very hot!

Aren't knuckles forged, not cast? I welded mine back on w/ 7018 just fine, on a 60. No special treatment. Now cast is another story, I was bored and welding old brake rotors together recently with 7018 no preheat, postheat any of that. The bead would look awesome then one sharp blow w/ 2 lb hammer would break things apart.
