The SOB's are at it again.

Today's Naples Daily News had an article in it about the ORV issue. Give their home page a visit and look for the article. Our old nemesis Donald Barry made a few remarks in his new capacity as vice president of the Wilderness Society, but at least he didn't compare us to Nazi's like he did last week in the Sun-Sentinel article. Superintendent John Donahue contributes misinformation implying there was absolutely no management of ORVs prior to his arrival.
It really is a must-read. Click: http://www.naplesnews.com/01/04/naples/d631077a.htm
Also, folks, there appears to be a rumor--or a series of rumors--based upon last week's Sun Sentinel article that the ORV Plan has been thrown out (one version of the rumor had it being thrown out by Congress), that Donahue was fired, and worst of all, there is no need to continue our fundraising efforts.
NONE OF THIS IS TRUE! I am in frequent contact with our attorney and met with him personally earlier this week. Here are the facts:
The new Administration's appointees are finally settled in enough that they can get around to familiarizing themselves with the issues related to our case. Naturally, this would include talking with the superintendent of the preserve, and that's the reason Donahue was summoned to Washington.
Whenever the federal government is sued it is common practice for them to entertain settlement discussions. Just because they are willing to talk doesn't mean they are ready to roll over. Despite what you may have heard anywhere else, settlement discussions have not yet begun. There is no sweetheart deal in the works. We anticipate fair treatment by Secretary Norton's staff, however, unlike the biased and underhanded approach that took place during the previous administration.
Resolving the ORV issue effectively will be a long and expensive process. There are now eight anti-use defendent intervenors who will be opposing us in court. By law ORV use in the preserve must be properly managed. If we are successful in throwing out the flawed plan (either in Court or through settlement discussions) it will be necessary for us to help craft a sensible replacement plan.
Please save my email address and let me know if you hear any more rumors. We need to put them to rest before they get out of hand.
If you have not yet made a contribution toward the cause, please make your check payable to Wildlife Conservation Fund of America and send it to me at:
Everglades Coordinating Council

Miami, Florida 33170
Contributions of $100 or more will get you two free "I GAVE" stickers to display on your truck and ORV. Contributions of $250, $500, or $1,000 will get your name or your company's name on our major contributors' board which we take around to various public events.
