Hi all
I have a well used small backhoe. the ram that lifts the first part of the boom
will not go all the way up. the rest of the rams work ok.
the controls have not been apart.
it worked one day and not the next.
I need help trouble shooting it what do I need to check?
I am thinking I need to rebuild the ram

Check out northerntool for a new ram. We have found them on there new for cheaper than we could rebuild ours. Are you sure that the ram didn't suck some air or water that won't cycle thru the ram?

some zilch

just replace it, especially if aren't personally equipped to disaassemble a cylinder

ummm... don't just replace it... go through a trouble shooting session of some sort:shaking: it's extending partially and then stopping??

is the boom mechanically jamming for some reason??

is the hydraulic pump providing enough pressure to make the cylinder lift the boom or is it shitty and worn out??

have you check for kinks in the hoses as the boom moves?

have you cracked the lines at the cylinder to see if they are receiving hydraulic pressure once it stops extending??

or you can just throw a new one at it and see what happens:shaking::shaking:

+1
Put a pressure gauge at both ends, watch what they do when you run the valve.
Also what kind of backhoe is it? Some of the newer machines have somewhat complicated hydraulic systems with regen for boom down.
