I am assuming the housing is cast iron, so what do I need to do to get a good weld to steel?

Not cast, stamped steel. If you've ever seen a rockwell, you will notice the BIG FAWKIN WELD DOWN THE MIDDLE OF THE HOUSING! Yeah, so uhhh - normal welding will hold up just fine. TRUUUUST ME!

Crank up the heat and weld it!!!!

i second the crank up the heat statement, i ripped the spring mounts off of mine because i didn't use enough heat. it sure looked nice, right up to the point of ripping them off.

And for shits sake.... be sure and grind off all the old paint/rust/etc.... trust me on this one... it won't be pretty if you don't... :eek:
