Jare and Alfaster on the rocks
Many of you have been interested about Jare's Alfaster and other cool Prototype class competition rigs so here is some pics for you.
I took these at Ravijoki which is one of the best and biggest off-road place here in Finland.
I hope you enjoy:D

FLEXYSAMMY 09-18-2002, 06:58 AM Great pics! Can't read web sight???:flipoff2:
BadDog 09-18-2002, 07:02 AM Drop down on the top right has a series of file names. Selecting them will take you to other pics...
unissamog 09-18-2002, 07:03 AM whole lot of portal axles there..........:D
BadDog 09-18-2002, 07:04 AM Hehe, yeah, Finnish... :D
Also, click "alkuperäinen kuva" at the bottom of each pic for a fullsize image... And the little "arrow heads" next to the drop down move you next/prev...
TessaL 09-18-2002, 07:06 AM Here is short lesson about Finnish:
SISÄÄN=Enter
luettelo=archive/list of thumbnails
vieraskirja= quest book
Simple way to check those pics:
Just clik small white arrow (pointing right) above the 1st pic and it takes you to next picture and so on....
text "alkuperäinenkuva" below pictures is "original picture" and by cliking that text you can see pic at bigger/original size
I hope this helps a little;)

TessaL 09-18-2002, 07:14 AM When are brining them to the USA to compete?
Hmmmm.... ;) You must ask Jare he might have something on his dirty mind :D
patooyee 09-18-2002, 12:43 PM Those rigs all rock! Something I noticed is that most of them are running 44" or larger tires, which I bet many in the comps here in the US would run if they were FRICKING ALLOWED. I don't want to hijack this thread, but why the hell don't many of them allow anything bigger than 40"?

Not necessarily.
If you look at how they are mounted they are inboard on the axle and way inboard on the body compared to similar rigs you see in the US. That would give you a lot more flex on a ramp type situation, but not a whole lot of over all droop or compression since they would have a relatively short about of travel.
Those things probably only travel 8" at most. But, the way its setup it doesn't matter.
BJ On Roids 09-18-2002, 09:56 PM hey you EURO guys :flipoff2:
who over there isn't running portals? :D

TessaL 09-19-2002, 01:07 AM You guys must pay a lot to import the boggers and TSLs.
Yeah, swamper prices are quite high here compared to prizes you have....
for example 33x14x15 bogger cost 312 euros (euro=$)
and 35x15.5x15 TSL sx cost 345 euros:mad:
TessaL 09-19-2002, 01:23 AM How big are the tractor tires on the white "jeep"?
those are about 47" tall agricultural tractor tires
Note in the this picture how tire is twisted between rocks. Result w/ rear locked was rear axle shaft u-joits destruction :shaking:
http://photo.jippii.fi/fi/image//data/photo/jippii.fi/t/e/tessal/1031304165723.jpeg

MOG and C303 portals are as common here as dana 44's there in US....
...NOT :flipoff2:
In Finland there is about 20 portal axled rigs... And if you want to find portals these days you need to buy whole unimog:p
BJ On Roids 09-19-2002, 05:16 PM COOLCOOL....
BUT...my question...if you know the answer that is...
do you know how the C303 compares...strength wise to the mog portals, are the volvos a heap weaker or do they still have significant strength?
can you run 42" or 44" tyres with a 3 tonne rig and get some sort of reliability....or will i just break them :nuke:
cheers!!
a comparison page or something might be cool too..... in english of course
we from down under also get raped on swamper prices
spudzz 09-20-2002, 01:48 AM I have some questions too please, how wide are the 303 axles wheel mounting surface to WMS?
And most of the pics I've seen so far of rears are with the diff offset to the passenger side. Are the centered diff rear axles from the 6x6 Volvos only, and not from a C303? If this is the case are the the 6x6 axles the same specs as the 303 axles?
Also do you know the spring perch width?
And last question for this post, what size is the bolt pattren?
Ok this is the last question... What size rims are stock for these axles... 16", 16.5". or 20"?
Ok this is really the last question... What is the safe reccomended RPM for these axles? Can they be run at 90 or 100km/h (Canadian `Eh) on paved roads?
TessaL 09-20-2002, 05:54 AM COOLCOOL....

can you run 42" or 44" tyres with a 3 tonne rig and get some sort of reliability.... my knowledge about strengths of mog vs. volvo portal axles is so that mog axles are better (cast iron axles are heavies and strongest) than volvos.
Both portals are possible to break (seen that) but it will need very much power and big tires and very agressive driving style
If your rig weights 3000kg, tires are 42-44" and you have lockers and horses to spin those rubbers you probably will need cast iron mog axles. That's my opinion :D
how wide are the 303 axles wheel mounting surface to WMS? What size rims are stock for these axles Track witdh is 154cm and mounting surface at rims is on the outer edge so WMS to WMS
is probably some 170-175cm (this was wild quess  )
Rims are 16"
What is the safe reccomended RPM for these axles? Can they be run at 90 or 100km/h (Canadian `Eh) on paved roads? In some C303 info page there was mentioned that max. recommented speed was 80km/h:rolleyes: Not sure how fast C303 will REALLY move but as gearing is about 58:1 in stock that speed sounds realistic
To all other your question I don't have nothin more than ...

Well I had some plans to take part to UROC Super Crawl, but "no money, no honey". And lack of time and I'm also on to a new job so it's impossible to get vacation right away when beeing newbie. So we'll just have to see that maybe next year we could get something.....at least I would like to see some action in live.

We made those ourself. Coils are from VW Golf or Passat (don't remember) and those coils for lowering your car. Shocks are adjustable Koni shocks for Audi Coupe Quatro. And rest is all hand made.

On the way back from last weekends Nordic Trial in denmark we bought some Volvo c-303 portals from sweden (Fjärås Bildemontering). So far I can't give you much info, but the complete front axle weigths 170kg without tyres. So the axle is very light compared to unimog 411 "older type (one big center part + portals) that axle weighs 240kg!! I could measure the width tomorrow if I remember(we are going to go driving into my friends woods), so if you need that and I haven't put it up to here untill tomorrow evening then please remind me ;)
6x6 axles has different gear ratio....if I remember it was prettuy close to 7:1 when in 4x4 models it's about 6:1
6x6 model back axle is centered...or at least very close to the center line. In 4x4 models the pumpkin is on passenger side (right side).
If you have tyres like 38.5 SX on road I think you can push it up to 100km/h. Formula Off Road dudes spins these axles a lot on sand and there seems to be very little problem on those cars.
Bolt pattern....don't know yet but keep asking it from me and I'll sort it out. And same goes with the spring pearches...;)
Someone asked about tyre size to Volvo axles....well Popo here in Finland uses 44" tyres and Per Larsson in Sweden too but their cars are very light (something like ~1200kg) and have only 4-cylinder engines. But I've seen some 38.5" SX under 1500kg Jeeps with about 350 healthy V8 horses. And some paddle tyres (21" wide Paddla Trak) and 270hp turbo charged Volvo engine. So go figure out :D I think it's lot about that how you drive and where you drive.

spudzz 09-20-2002, 01:33 PM Jare and Tessal thanks for the answers I promiss I'll keep buggin' you for the rest too... :D
If the 6x6 is close to centered can the 3rd member gears from a 303 be swapped in to get a 6:1 ratio? I don't think I could make a 303 offset rear work in a toyota with toyota t-cases.
100km/h is not a big thing if it can't be driven at highway speeds that just means I'll wheel close to home or get a trailer...
And I'm not coming to Finland until you fawkers put on some damn cloths!!

The width I measured today with my girlfriend and front axle from WMS to WMS is ~178cm. But the bolt pattern I'm not so sure. It has 8 lugs and the cirkle is little less than 225mm but more than 220mm......so if you need the accurate number please let me know and I try to find it or measure it:D :D
Oops I forgot to measure the spring pearches:(
I think the third member from 4x4 could be fitted easily to 6x6 rear axle.

Thanks again for the info keep it coming! :D
I did find out that the bolt pattren is 222mm so it looks like any rim other that factory is out as a bolt on. I think it'll be hummer wheels with new centers. Great news on the gears though, now I'll need to ask the guy in sweden i'll be buying from to either swap the 3rd from a 303 to the 6x6 axle or just remove the 3rd and crate a 303 3rd.
Just over 70" width is what I wanted to hear too, with hummer wheels I should be able to stay under 80" wide over all.

sweden 09-21-2002, 02:02 PM Just a thought about highway speed on volvo portals.. Since there are ppl using them in a paris/dakar rally (The Volvo XC70 /w portal conversion (http://www.dakar2003.nu))
And they intend them to hold up, both to the abuse and the constant high speeds on some parts of the rally?
There has been a C303 in a Dakar rally in the eighties dunno the result..

-Yea the bolt pattern is very strange one. In Finland and in Sweden most guys just laser cuts wheel centers for Volvo portals. You can use straight wheel centers if you grind little bit of from the drum brake.

I've exchanged a few emails with a man named Andrzej Gumowski. And he is offering from what I can tell a great price on a set of axles with steering linkage, all vaccuum valving, and a set of 4 wheels. That is for the 7.4:1, 7:1 or the 6:1 ratio. I'm looking for others to get in on a buy right now so the price will go down even more.

Well my opinion is that pretty many knows some english but Finn people are scared to talk, but after few beers you can talk A LOT!! People aged 35 and under are better in english than old people. Of course there are older people too who knows english, but it's easier to find younger ones to talk or get advices. I think you can get along just fine in bigger cities like Helsinki (Espoo and Vantaa is included to that), Turku, Tampere, Lahti, Oulu etc. but in small villages I think you really have to look for some younger people. I'm 26 and my childhood includes lot of James Bond movies and American films and TV series and off road magazines, so that's where I've got most of my speeks and writing.
What you would like to study?? I just finished my school in May in Helsinki Polytechnic (http://www.teli.stadia.fi/English/) and so I'm now car engineer.

Finish language can't be that hard....even all the children here speaks Finish:D :D :D :D
Well we have these immigrants that has learned to speak Finish so there is possibility to learn it if you really want to. At our class we had one fellow from Croatia (I think) he was brought to Finland to a hospital after getting shot badly in their war. He was heald up here and he was gratful of that and decided that he will pay back the money for Finland and learned the language and studied to be also a car engineer instead being a bum and just pick up welfare money.
