On this 01 5.0 explorer it has no dizzy. Just a small device with a couple wires. Can i try advancing it for more power like a guy would do to an older unit with an actual distributer or no?

Sure, you CAN do anything you want. Let us know if it works...:D

it should have a crankshaft and camshaft sensors for the timing

i would imagine you would need a computer or some sort of programmer to plug into the wiring harness and play with it

Ok fair enough, I just didnt kno if that would work or not. Looking for ideers to get more power and or mpg out of this deal.

Look in your local paper for a shop that does Dyno Tuning. They should be setup to flash a new program to your computer (or aftermarket computer) if necessary. Then, have them run the rig on the dyno and you can SEE the differences in how each tune works on the rig.

IF you can, find one that specializes on Mustangs. They'll be more Ford friendly then the ricer guys would be. They'll know more about the 5.0 then the rice tuners as well.

Thats an ideer. My rig is AWD tho and the only dyno in town is not awd. So u think they can just flash my computer with a different tune just that quick?

Not to sidetrack your thread, but are those explorers really AWD?? I might be going to look at one in the next couple of days and just assumed people were mistakenly calling a 4x4 an AWD??

Well, im still learnin but i think they had both options depending on the one you get. Mine is an AWD model. Has no 2wd option or a 4 low, just all time AWD. Kind of nice tho, i like it. I drove the same thing but with the 4.0 V6 and it didnt seem much slower but i like the 5.0 V8 better. Ive been readin the explorerforum.com

The V8's were 2wd or AWD only... no 4x4. The V6's were 2x4, 4x4, and some kind of auto 4x4 crap.

do not try to adjust the cam sensor - that is the little thing on the dissy drive housing

it has to be correctly in phase with the crank sensor, or it will -
ping
jerk
buck
MIL

basicly the timing and fuel injectors will be out of sink. i would recomend getting it tuned by a shop that has delt with an expolder before. i dought that a mustang shop will be able to help you

buy a hand held tuner - they are out there
