OHV STAKEHOLDERS SAY GREEN ATTACK IS A STAB
IN THE BACK

OAKLEY, CA -- One of Governor Davis’ key recreation stakeholder groups is
afraid that the new anti-motorized
recreation hit piece just released by extreme preservationist groups could
cause a set-back to the state’s
collaborative process.* The new report “Off-Road to Ruin” has been
published by one of the green participants in
the California State Park’s* off-highway vehicle (OHV) ad hoc advisory
council.

This report is a good indicator that “crisis mongering” is still alive and
well in the extreme environmental
community.* Rather than commend the state’s OHV program for all of the good
work is has done including the
funding of hillside rehabilitation, trail closures and reroutes,* and
meadow restoration projects the report focuses
on the industry of conflict.

According to Don Amador, the western representative for the Blue Ribbon
Coalition, “I think this report casts
doubt upon the sincerity of certain green groups who I participate with in
Governor Davis’ OHV ad hoc advisory
committee at state parks.”

Amador, a member of the stakeholder group, says, “What makes this report
lack credibility is that it fails to
recognize the many positive OHV management stories that exist because of
the recreation partnership that is in
place between state parks, jeepers and dirt-bikers, and the federal land
agencies.”

“Even Chris Wood, a top policy to Forest Service Chief Mike Dombeck - a
Clinton administration official, has said
the OHV community should be commended for the many volunteer trail projects
they do for the Forest
Service and Bureau of Land Management,” Amador said.

“I have seen even local chapters of the Sierra Club send in letters of
commendation on how they support the
OHV program, yet this so-called report fails to mention the many good
aspects of the program.* Where there is
managed opportunities, the compliance with current OHV regulations by the
users is between 95 -98* percent,”
Amador concludes.
