I'd personally go with a 300 I6. Those motors will last 250,000+ easy and have tons of low end torque. Other than that just make sure the rear main seal isn't leaking too bad and everything feels tight.

If you feel the need for a V8 get one with a 351. My truck has a 302 and ive always felt like the truck could use a little more motor.

Also look into the F250s and F350s I wish I would have gotten one instead of the half ton.

Just familiarize yourself with the Ford Dana 44 TTB system. It's ok in stock form (much stronger than an IFS), but it is difficult to lift and modify.

I would look for an F-350 - they have a regular straight axle (dana 60 I believe).

Like everyone says, inspect the bushings and steering on the TTB thoroughly. If it has two tanks the slector valve is prone to going bad if it hasn't been used in a while (easy to fix).

Go fuel injected and the 1996 got a roller motor.
