: Help with noisy rear springs

So the previous owner relocated the shock mounts to allow some serious articulation in the back of my disco. he also welded in some cones inside the coil bucket to allow the spring to come out of the bucket and be guided back in. Only problem is that when the coil comes out of the bucket it makes one hell of a noise. the first time it happened I though I snapped an axle shaft. It is really quite loud. any ideas. I though I would flare the bucket a little to stop it from catching on the way out and maybe put a spring isolator in there made of floor mat or something to cushion it on the way back in. I dont mind some noise but the guy 4 trucks in front of me came back to see if I broke something. lol.

One more thing, anyone have trouble hitting the horn all the time when they are wheeling. Its kinda funny really. The people I have been crawling with ignore it now. lol.

Dump the cones and retain them.
I always bump the horn button, on a DII they like to stick.

If I retain the springs I will lose a lot of articulation. Right now I have 3" lift springs with 2" spacers. The springs come about 4-5" out of the buckets under extreme articulation. The rear end will twist up very nicely. I dont want to lose that.

With out any weight on the axle, what exactly are you getting with that 4-5"?

Cones are for chumps.

you might lose some rear articulation but your vehicle will be much more balanced and capable. You should search on this forum for retained springs. Just about everyone that wheels their rover hard has retained their springs. If you don't it can cause very quick changes in momentum which can cause roll overs.

If I were you I would find a way to disconnect the shocks and driveshaft to. Imagine the travel!!!!

It it true your tears make noise? ;)

I am a bit of a rookie in offroad tech. Not a rookie wrench. lol

It never really occured to me that a wheel lying on the ground with only axle weight wouldnt do much. Excellent point. Can I get a longer spring that keeps me at the same ride height and stays in the bucket with a retainer. Coil overs of course but after the research I did it may be beyond my budget.

Yea yea. Just imagine with only a brake line holding it in I could go anywhere. lol.

So retain the springs I get it. The previous owner obviously set it up to do this on purpose and I have to say he isnt an idiot. he owns a Rover and Morgan repair shop. Super nice guy and has been very helpful.

So in all your wisdom I will look into retaining the springs and possibly getting rid of the spacers and going all spring.

Any suggestion on a replacement spring? It is at 5" now 3" springs plus 2" spacers.

Think I will order the RTE 5"springs and make my own retainers. I read some guys are letting the shock limit travel. Sounds like a really bad idea especially if you have any money in your shocks. Are you guys running limiting straps or are the springs handling it for you.

Limit straps and bump stops are cheep compared to shocks.

Was anything done to adjust the pinion and stearing geometry after the lift?
I have heard of problems with 5" and can only imagine 7 would cause even more.
Why do you need more lift?

I will remove the spacers and go all spring and yes the axle hardware was cut off in back and the axle repointed. The hockey sticks were replaced with johnny jointed lower control arms. The front looks stock as far as I can tell. Drive line angles look good.

I wanted to do some real of roading and built this thing. Never really wheeled it. It just wasnt ever done. lol. Sold it to a buddy who wheels like crazy. Bought the Disco and now I am going about 3 times a week. I live about 5 miles fom some serious trails. High pucker factor. Get some pics and movies up when the camera shows up.

Nice looking. Just keep it the way it is. Your at the edge where making it better will cost you a crapload of cash.

Where do you live that has serious trails within 5 minutes?

West Virginia. Its a mix of private property and power line property (we have permission). There are some very rocky creeks we can go through. Ledged out hill climbs. Some off camber stuff. Lots and lots of trees. The Disco feels wide. A bunch of samurai's and wranglers cut all the trails so they are tight.

Tend to agree.
if you want change, then do coilovers and 3-link the front.
Just wheel it until you can afford it. Much better then having a rig sit in the garage for 3+ years as you save your pennies.

Not that I know much about that or anything :D

You should visit our shop talk forum (http://www.autobodytoolmart.com/shoptalk/)and ask Lou Santiago.

I tend to get way too in over my head. I think I am going to whel what I have and buy another and start over and do it the way I want.

I would definitely listen to everything the Previous Owner told you. He clearly is at the pinnacle of Land Rover engineering what with the heim jointed rear arms and a roto-flex, that's state of the art right there!

(who the fuck goes to the trouble of installing jointed rear arms and retains the roto-flex? The builder of this truck spent a couple of hundred dollars on a serious suspension mod, but did not spend the lousy $100 it takes to upgrade the driveshaft? WTF?????????????????)

The previous Oner as stated is a very nice person and has been very helpful. He gave me the part to convert to a non rotoflex drive shaft but said he hadnt got around to changing it. He offered to give me a RRC drive shaft to use with it but I think I am going to try and do a 1310 conversion so that I can do a DC drive line. I am not happy with the angles at the T Case. I believe an XJ drive line will fit OK. Need to measure tonight. I am confident I can adapt a new piece top and bottom to accept the 1310 joint. Let you know how it goes. For now it works. If my idea fails then I will get the RRC drive line from him until I figure out a better way to do it. I know I can go straight to Tom Woods and buy what I need but all my fab tools get Jealous when I start buying stuff I can make. I need to plan a few winter projects and this will probably be one of them.
