Now that i have a transmission cooling system that works i want to take the next step and keep it at an optimal temp and possibly run a thermostat. After talking with a few buddies last weekend at Hawthorne it seems like a good idea. "Most" of the time when my the fan is spinning on my transcooler the temp stays below 160 and from what i've read this is not good for the tranny. So is anybody running anything like this in their system? Pros? Cons?

This particular unit opens at 180*. When it is below 180 it bypasses the cooler. At around 60 bucks it SEEMS like a good idea. :D

Thanks for any input

Huss, there are a ton of newer cars/trucks that run them.... Not sure about your application...but I know they work;)

You could use a thermostatic switch on the fan, but it might not be as reliable as that thermostat.

All of the transmission guys I talked to said the transmission can't run too cool. Thats why I run both coolers on mine. Of course my trans just quit. I fawking hate autos.

Why not run the fan on a thermo switch so the fan will turn off below 170deg or something.

i have had issues with fan thermo switches, i just don't trust em. Is there any downside to running an auto trans too cold?

Yea running them too cold can reduce thier life. Not near as much as running hot but it can. The big difference is oil doesnt break down from being cold.

You can run temp switch on the fan with an override switch. Id let the temp switch handle it most of the time when recreational wheeling. And when racing switch on the overide.

You know there is choice #3. Just always drive the thing with your foot to the floor and that will guarantee that nothing will run too cold. But that may burn up trannies too.

If those tranny thermostats are not too expensive, <100 Id give one a shot. and run the gigoneurmous cooler. Fuckin A.

Don't listen to Ian, he still has a clutch pedal:flipoff2:

Huss, I have a brand new t-stat for a Ford truck, I have no idea what tranny, or what temp it opens/closes at, but its yours if you want it;)
