I am in the process of doing a 5.9 Cummins swap into a 79 Ford F-150 which is going pretty good so far but have a few questions about transmission to transfer case set up that I would like to run.

The transmission that I have is a NV4500 out of a 1998 Dodge 4x4 2500 diesel and the transfer case is NP205 out of my 1979 Ford F-150 (400m C6) and would like to know if there is any way to mate the two of these together.

Problem
#1 the transfer case and the adapter that I have will not go together because the shifter on the transfer case hits the mounting surface. So can this just be clearanced to fit?

#2 the number of splines on the transmission is 29 I think and the transfer case is 31. 5th gear nut is backed off in the Trans so does anyone make a transmission output with 31 spline that I can swap in? Or do I need to go back with 29? And change the input shaft on transfer case with one out of the Dodge 205 that was mated to a Getrag (if I can even find one)

Or should I just say to hell with it and get a NP241 like was behind the Trans to start with?

Thanks in advance
Here are a few pictures of the stuff I that speak of...

I'm not sure if the adapters are the same, but I had to grind a notch out of mine to clear the np205 shift rails. I am running a 7.3l, t19, np205.

I'd go with the 241, if it will fit in the chassis.
Dodge used a male input shaft on the 205 and a coupler. The racetrack to round adapter they used made up for this legnth. You'd have to come up with a spacer to do the same using the ford case, it's around 4" or so.

I'd just run the NP241, they are plenty strong, have a better low range, and are lighter.
Are you going to keep the half ton front end?

I learned alot doing my swap, and have researched alot of others, some things I learned;
A PS hose from a 88 E150 with 5.8 can be bent up and used
I didn't use factory AC in mine, but it looked like the turbo would hit the box unless the motor was moved over, or big body lift, or different manifold
NV trannys take special fluid, like $25 a qt, and you need to overfill it through the boot by a qt.

I would use a NV271 out of a 3rd gen dodge, they are a direct bolt up and very strong, also a little heavy, and if you can find one from a manual tranny truck get the driveshaft as they have 1480 joints.....I would also recommend getting rid of the 44 front and 9 inch rear, they will begin to hate life quickly with a cummins, a 60/70 combo will be more to its liking.....

I wanted to use the Ford NP205 so I bought it from an Advance Adapter dealer (here on Pirate...but I can't remember who...sorry) for less than Advance was asking. The kit was an adapter ring and stub shaft. I had to clearance the tailshaft of the Dodge NV 4500 some for the shift rails (the instructions were with the adapter) If I remember correctly, it spaces it out 1 5/8 inches.

My Nv4500 came with the 205 on it and the guy did the adaptor and stub shaft everything. It looked like he had to shave off a protion of the output shaft on the nv4500 for the stub shaft so everything would sit correctly with the adaptor. I took it all off and went with the atlas 4 speed. Sooo...

I still have the adaptor and stub shaft up for sale its for the dodge 29 spline to the for 31? spline input. Let me know if you need it make me an offer.

Thanks for all the input. Looks like the easiest way is going to find a 241 (are there any other bolt in tcases to look for?). The 44/9" will not be there for too long, plans include 60 up front and what ever happen to run across for the rear

Kyle Might have to retract my previous post this would mate my NV4500 to my 205 that I want to run? If so then I am interested

Mine was for the 98 Dodge 4x4 gas version. It has the 29 spline output shaft and had the NP205 with I think it was 31 spline. The adaptor is a ring that mounts between the tranny and transfercase, it also has a stubshaft that slips over the output shaft of the tranny to convert to the correct splines. Check all your stuff out, maybe even call advanced adaptors about the adaptor to make sure it will work. Make me an offer on it, you can see what they go for new on the AA website.

Let me know,

Kye
