I was wondering what would be the cheapest way to get a 2 inch or more lift out of my '73 FJ40?:D

if you're not gonna wheel it, go with add-a-leafs/and or shackles. If youre gonna wheel it wait and buy a good lift or go SOA. both the add-aleafs and shackles comprimise ride quality and off road ability(suspension travel, front approach angle).

Watch out, here comes the search police!:D

though Im not a fan, a body lift would fit the bill depending on the steering shaft.
how many people have started with a cheap lift and then had to go back and do it right later. :D

I gotta question,

On a 40, how come 5" lift springs don't require a cut and turn but on a SOA with the same lift you do?

Cutting & turning all depends on ujoint angles @ the pinion. lots of people have gotten away w/ not cutting & turning there axle on a SOA fj40. but as has been said many times; if any thing its best to cut & turn, even if it only gets your drive shaft out of the rocks. also SOA usually give you more that 5" of lift.

They really should.
But on a 5" spring lift you typically do not have much droop and you are using the stock spring pads(I know there are exceptions) But on a SO you have a lot more droop. So there is a greater chance of binding the DS. The simple solution when you do a SO to the DS bind is to rotate the housing. Which removes the caster. Then you need to cut and turn.
Make sense?

Now, what do you need the lift for?
If you want to fit 33's you can do it with no lift Just bring out the friendly sawzall....

I ran 32" tires on my 79 for 9 years with only fender cutouts and some extended shackles. It was my primary driver that entire time. Which included a bunch of trips back and forth between Reno and Las Vegas.

Cheap?

I have used BDS 4" rear springs that I will sell cheap. They would have to be shipped from central Ohio.

Cheap...I recommend looking for used goods. Alot of guys have gone SOA after SUA and are selling the lifted springs.
