: The "Cleanest" Samurai out there?
Reflexx 09-10-2009, 11:36 AM I'm starting my (20 year in the making) Samurai project. A stretched, VW diesel Samurai on 33s. I'm after a clean, modern, look. No exterior cage, no bobtail, no extreme suspensions, etc..
Something along the lines of a Defender 90 or new Wrangler's fit and finish. But certainly not a Mall Crawler. Imagine a 2010 Samurai and that's what I want to build. Something I can drive on weekdays and tackle decent trails on weekends.
Soooo... please post up pics of the cleanest / well built Samurais for inspiration and ideas. I'd also welcome suggestions on suspension, cages, bumpers, drivetrain, etc.
I want to do this once and do it right. My Samurai has been with me for over 20 years (original owner!) and it's time to get it done. Consider this a " Samurai community driven" design. I have my ideas, I'd like to hear yours.
Below are pics of my Samurai (humpin a wreck) and the stretch that I bought.
thanks!

is there anything else you did to the motor and is that 110hp a est. or dyno
is a it a 1.6 8v or the 1.3 ?
if you click on the link at the top of the page and view slide show you will see our 61,000 original miles 86 zuki I got for $800 and built it in 11 days to do the rubicon in. It has a 95 16v power steering and working A/C. hybrid rear 4.30 gears lock-rites F/R 4.16 t-case RUF SOA on 31's. It looked realy nice before the rubicon and then it acrued some dents.

Dyno!
The engine was completely rebuilt and tuned. Special cam, pistons, lighter fly wheel, spark plugs, coil, twin 40mm Weber carbs, header, 2" free flow exhaust etc.
The acceleration is crazy, but so is the fuel consumption (12 MPG).
I once drove about 100 MPH but that was scary as hell.
I had to use both my hands to keep both doors shut and used my teeth for steering ;-).
Unfortunately I didn't have any hands left to keep the softtop from getting airborne.
At that speed you can see the fuel needle actually drop:D!
At idle speed I have to keep revving the engine or it will stall.
Starting the engine in the cold is guaranteed to wake up the whole neighbourhood:shaking:.
That's why I installed the coolant heater.
But it's all worth it!
I almost win every traffic light duel when I go to and from work:smokin:!
It makes the day bearable!
I love the stunned faces of my 'opponents' in the rear view mirror when they realize they've just been beaten by a Suzuki Samurai:flipoff2:.
I know, my life is sad...

thats bad ass man I not too sure about driving a sami at 100 mph steering with my teeth thou, I running propane now so I either going to build a high compression motor or try to do a turbo Do you know what the specs. on the cam?

Of course driving it with my teeth was a joke.
But I did drive 100 MPH and I can tell you: that car wasn't built for that kind of speed!
I don't know the specs.
The cam was custom made. I just went to a shop that makes custom racing cams, gave them the specs on the engine, carbs etc. and told them I wanted to go really fast!
I only remember it wasn't cheap.
If you want more power gain for less money I would go for another engine.
I spent thousands of dollars on the engine alone.
It was my first project and I'm much older and a little wiser now.

Somewhere I have pictures of it with no top and the windshield folded down and it looks pretty cool. We built this for a guy that wanted an Army Jeep/LJ10 look with modern Samurai running gear. We removed the targa bar, flares and rockers along with anything that made it look like a samurai. I put wheels/tires off an LJ10 on it. The guy ended up selling it back to me after he owned it for a while and I have to say that it is one of my favorite sammy's I've ever owned. I sold it a while back to a guy in AZ and I sure miss it.
I bought an LJ80 to replace it.
Reflexx 09-16-2009, 10:47 AM Truck trader,
I've watched that LBW maroon beauty for years. It's almost exactly what I'm after. I'll certainly welcome any of the links, advice and info you're willing to share.
Once I start that project, I'll even invite (bribe) you to come help. I'm in rRverside and have a nice fab shop. Perhaps trade some of your knoweldge for use of my shop?
TruckTrader 09-16-2009, 10:51 AM Sounds good to me. I saw that you were local and was wondering if you would like me to drive it out there for you so you can see it? I would be happy to share info on the build/specs if you like. Let me know if you want to get together sometime and talk Sammy's. :D
Reflexx 09-16-2009, 10:55 AM Rockrat,

Reflexx 09-16-2009, 11:02 AM TruckTrader,
I was under the impression that the LWB was sold? If you still have it, I'll offer lunch to have you come out and talk Samurais!
I have a sandrail to tune up and prep for the coming duning season, but once that's done I think it's Samurai time. Having my wife see yours might let her loosen up the budget restraints!
I'm picking up a 1.9TD AAZ in the next few weeks. Which is even more temptation to get started.

that's why I have not been responding. the ones above are exactly the opposite of what I wanted to have this thread be about. the OD green one is really nice but the huge tires take it out of the "no extreme suspensions" comment.

the red and maroon LWBs are exactly right! more of those!!!

Reflexx 01-22-2010, 02:17 PM This is one of the cleanest yet well modified zooks I've ever seen, these pics were taken at tuff truck comp in Australia
http://i269.photobucket.com/albums/jj51/GRPABT1/bandagedbear2.jpg
where exactly is the Samurai in this pic? I was hoping to see 75-95% Samurai, not 1% Samurai (aka, the hood)
TruckTrader 01-22-2010, 02:20 PM Trucktrader, I have a poster sized printout of your old red LWB on my garage wall as inspiration for my LWB build, If you're able to get more pics I'd love to see them.
Thanks, I appreciate that. There are more pics here if you're interested http://s27.photobucket.com/albums/c166/TruckTrader/87%20Samurai%20Long%20Wheel%20Base/
Reflexx 01-22-2010, 02:35 PM I can say the same, without even having a poster up!
My project LWB/Diesel keeps getting pushed back and I cannot wait to get started! Considering I have had my Samurai since 1988(!), it can wait a few more months.
rattlecan78 01-22-2010, 03:29 PM if that was my daughters sami(the gayest one) I wouldn't let her drive it until I ungayed it at least a little, at the very least I would take the rattlecan to it:flipoff2:
50_Shooter 01-22-2010, 04:44 PM I would nearly give BOTH my testicles for that maroon LWB. That is by far the most beautiful 4x4 I have ever laid eyes on. Whoever owns that one is a lucky man, and whoever built/painted it is pretty darn talented.
On a side note, is it reasonably possible for an american to go to canada, buy a lwb, bring it home, and get it licensed? Obviously it is possible, but I just wondered how hard it was...
The reason I asked is I heard it was impossible to go overseas and bring a newer jimny with a diesel and coils back home.
Sorry for the hijack reflexx :p
ilikemud 01-22-2010, 04:52 PM the "gayest" samurai post was a waste of space.
Sorry to have feed the trolls.

Hey, no testicles required! I built the maroon one. I found it in a barn in CA as a bone stock LWB. The good part was that it had been in CA for several years and it kept it from rusting. I have brought several from Canada and most of them are rusted really bad. If you want a few tips on getting them to the states shoot me a PM. I have a few tricks that make it easier!

I'll add to Truck Trader's reply too. I spent a DECADE looking for a LWB in good (not even great) shape in the US. No luck. So I had one made! search these forums for "Reflexx stretch" and you'll see how one can be made from two SWB samurais. the advantage is that the wheelbase is stretched without the rear overhang of the factory LWBs.
crap. now I want to go work on mine. I gotta stay away from Pirate and go back to glamisdunes.com. gotta finish my sandcar first!
rattlecan78 01-22-2010, 09:53 PM don't know how viable this is but a buddy of a buddy of mine(who happens to be a scout sniper and who I consider a reliable source) bought a VW beetle in the states a couple years back, when they were still makin new ones in mexico flew down bought a new one threw his plate and registration on it and drove it home. He said the border guard actually commented on how clean it was, he told him he had a guy in socal restore it for him and away he went. I've been ponderin the same idea to get a TD fj62 outa the great white north if anybody tries and has luck lemme know.

Oh man, I dont know about that one. It may be true, but wouldn't you really need to switch VIN numbers to make it believable? I would hate to get caught doing that. In fact, there is a guy from my hometown that owns a bodyshop that got caught switching newer vin tags from wrecked cars to good older cars, and he went to jail for a while. He was caught selling the old cars as being a few years newer.
Ho Shorts 01-23-2010, 05:47 AM that is the cleanest I've seen... simple... basically perfect if I were gonna build one
I especially like the 18 inch long rear shackles. Gives me inspiration.
rattlecan78 01-23-2010, 05:48 AM yeah I suppose you would but comin from canada they are pretty lax at the old border especialy on a friday or saturday night
wearethebucs 01-24-2010, 07:36 AM Here's our 88'. Nothing too special. YJ SOA with boomerangs. It's got a brand new 1.3L with a mild cam, CAI, weber, header, MSD ignition, and bored .20 over. 120 horse at the crank! Minispool in the rear and a lock-rite up front. Shes a bitch to turn even with power steering, but it will go anywhere. We're thinking about getting a 6.5:1 kit for it and twin sticking it.

Why bother when cars can be legally brought down from canada, without a huge hassle. Guys up here bring trucks from the states north all the time as well. Done legally, if you have the required documentation beforehand (done some homework) it's apparently a pretty smooth process.
crazy sami 01-24-2010, 02:06 PM heres mine. I'v done some wheeling in it but so far no serious damage and its still really clean on the inside and out.http://c4.ac-images.myspacecdn.com/images02/70/l_c6bdd56ab4bd4fdca5fcda6a4b6e6c3f.jpg

It brought some serious coin, and I'm the dumbass who bought it. I just couldn't let it go with the woodgrain and altimeter being factory. I have looked at thousands of samis on the web and I have never seen the woodgrain option before. I didnt know the stainless panels were a factory option either. I have been looking for a nice sami for so long that I was sick of waiting. I am not going to butcher it up any besides a lift for 31-33's.
I haven't picked it up yet so I hope it's as nice as it's described and looks in the pics!!!

Suzuki should have built this with a 2L turbodiesel and brought it to the US!!!
Suzuki Spain (AKA Santana Motors) built it, it was in production until 2003. 1.870 cc TD Renault F18 engine:

It has a fire wall , bonnet and about 1.5m of chassis rail in it, thats as much zook as its got in it.. owners name is Mark Mitchell.
Its one of the best built truck in Austraila hands down... but not much car... I compete against him in this and it can crawler some awesome stuff.... but big $$$$$ spent too.

Do you mind posting pics of the space between them and shifters.
I am looking at seats now and need something 19 - 20 inches wide to fit in my samurai
skyman6529 05-05-2011, 08:14 AM Pietro, your build was anything but the norm, you paid excruciatingly close attention to detail. That takes a lot of patience on a frame up resto.

Very nice, clean rig and I know that a lot of people like them, but TJ flares just look wrong on a Sami.
Pietro 05-11-2011, 04:31 AM I like the square TJ flares over the round Sami ones because the entire truck is boxy.

Not sure if I just cant see it in the pics but if its not there you better get some cross bracing in that cage. The blue sami was rebuilt after its madain voyage after i end over ended it and totalled the sami . We were testing the suspension and engine out and i knew i needed to X the b pillar but forgot about it that day and dropped a ledge. It screwed the sami up bad. Might put some forward triagulation bars as well. Ill find pics of the sami after the roll over and show you how it ended up.

the first stage of it. around 8 or 9 inches of lift on 33x14 boggers. im making steel bumpers soon similar to road armor bumpers, something you don't see much on sami's, but they should make it look a little better.
don't mind the DD in the background, made for a cool picture

I think I saw you at the mud run in Blue Hill last fall (September 25th I think). I was visiting friends in Brooksville (like every year) and drove over to watch the event. I think I was the only spectator from germany ; ).
It's a small world after all.
