VITAL ACTION ALERT ON FOREST FEES

PLEASE DISTRIBUTE WIDELY

WHAT'S UP:
Senator Bob Graham (D-FL) introduced legislation, S.1011, on June 11th which
would make the Recreation Fee Demonstration Program PERMANENT on America's
National Parks, National Forests, BLM and US Fish & Wildlife Service
refuges. That adds up to permanent access fees for an area equivalent to a
third of the lower 48 states!

This is the most important measure that we've protested since Fee Demo
began. We need lots of quick letters to Senator Graham's office AND some
quick phone calls to YOUR two Senators in DC.

THE MOST IMPORTANT THING TO DO:

Please write to Senator Bob Graham, 524 Hart, Washington DC, 20510

Tell him you oppose S.1011 because it makes public lands fees permanent.
Say briefly how controversial and unpopular these fees are. Tell him you're
contacting your Senators to ask them not to cosponsor his bill (S.1011).

We need to turn up the heat on Senator Graham's bill! As usual, a brief
HANDWRITTEN letter makes the most impact with legislators. Please make sure
your name and address are clearly legible.

THE NEXT MOST IMPORTANT THING TO DO:

Place one or two quick phone calls to YOUR state's two Senators. See the
list below for Senators from most Western States impacted by Fee Demo. (For
Senators for OTHER states, please check your phonebook's listing for US
Government offices, under Congress. Call their DC number, or the Capitol
switchboard in DC at (202) 224-3121, and ask to be connected to Senator...)

Ask whoever picks up the phone to leave a message for the Senator, asking
them please NOT to cosponsor S.1011 to make public land fees permanent.
That's it - quick and easy!

Wyden, Ron (OR) (202) 224-5244

Smith, Gordon (OR) (202) 224-3753

WHAT ELSE YOU CAN DO:

Write a brief letter to your local newspaper, urging people to write their
legislators in opposition to S.1011.

Here's a sample letter for you to use. Please feel free to change it, but
keep it short.

To the Editor,

In early June, legislation was introduced in the US Senate by Senator Bob
Graham of Florida, to place a permanent tollgate in front of most of
America's public lands. The bill, S. 1011, will allow fees to be charged
for access to every National Forest, all land managed by the BLM and every
refuge operated by the US Fish & Wildlife Service. National Parks are
included too, though most of them already have entrance fees.

Fees like these, as we've seen with five years of the Recreation Fee
Demonstration Program, are not only selling our birthright - access to lands
that all Americans own together - they also discriminate against lower
income families, who, studies show, are staying away from public lands where
fees are charged.

Please write your Congressman and Senators, today, and ask them to oppose
S.1011. If we don't act now, one more freedom may be lost forever.

Yours sincerely,
...
