: 4.3 in a cj7 exhaust routing

Finishing up a 4.3TBI in a CJ7 swap. Exhaust needs to crossover to drivers side to Y and run down drivers side. (will be CA smog legal) No room to crossover though, driveshaft clearance is tight. (CJ has approx 4.5 lift)

What have any of you done in a V6/V8 non dual exhaust swaps? I have heard of possibly putting a LH manifold on right side and run around front of engine just below balancer?

I ran mine under the oil pan. I didn't really like the idea of the heat under the pan, but it seemed to he ok.

I have a old CJ5 with a Buick 231 V6. I am working on this right now. P side around front of oil pan and collects with D-side. Pics here:

Glad to hear heat should not be a problem, I was worried about that also.

I just did this swap in my Jeepster.
I had issues with the stock exhaust manifolds dumping right on top of the frame on passenger and steering shaft on driver side.
I found a set of factory headers at a wrecking yard that cleared the steering and frame.
I am running a T-18 tranny and ran the passenger pipe tucked between the bell housing and tranny. Tight fit but the pipe has plenty of clearance for the driveshaft.
I had Babes Muffler (local shop) do the work and it took him 3 tries to get it where he was happy.
Good luck with the project

When I did the original 231 install I ran my exhaust like that for a while. I didn't like the heat so I ended up blocking off the second inlet to the passenger exhaust manifold and ran both sides into a Y.

I considered this but can't get the y-pipe past the front drive shaft, not enough clearance. My front drive shaft will occasionally hit the B/H during extreme articulation. Also not enough room to run p-side next to the tranny/t-case. Pics of your set up would be great!

I don't have any pic's of it when I had the 3.8 but I can get a couple with the 4.3

Funny thing is I just gave away my old 3.8 manifolds and Y pipe.

I might have a passenger side Turbo manifold if you want it.

The second outlet is out the top not the rear. It is capped off also.

I'm spring over with my 4.3 and 4l60-E but was able to run my cross over right up against the front of the transmission housing. It was a tight fit, to the point that my drive shaft self clearanced itself into the the exhaust about 1/2inch. You can put bump stops to stop that clearance issue at the expense of wheel travel. The other option is to get a set of driver side headers and run one backwards on the passenger side. You will be able to do your cross over in front of the drop on the oil pan. Never did the latter just saw it on a s-10 so I don't know if there were any clearance issues or bolt alignment issues.

I may take you up on the exhaust manifold. Going to try and get things welded up this week and hopefully get a muffler soon.
I'll check back tomorrow.

Will be around through Thursday and all next week then will be gone for a couple weeks
Close to Berryessa Road

Also,
May have a muffler for you too

I did the Vortec 5.7 swap. Ca smog legal as well so I had to have two ODBII cats. So from the manifords they come down and back, the two cats sit with one on each side of the transfercase, then the driver side turns under the output of the transfer into the passenger side and down that side of the CJ7 and out the back right just in front of the shackle.

Added a few more pics last week. I am going to get a few more welds taken care of tomorrow and hopefully finish it off.
"Woods" sorry I did not contact you about the manifold and muffler, I figured I am too far into it now to make any changes but I greatly appreciate the offer.

Finished it off. I have a little concern with clearance at the front diff. Going to hopefully get to Hollister to try it out and see if there are any issues. Added a few pics of the tailpipe to my google page!
