The fish don't have much fight in them after an encounter with one of those.

What type of watercraft are you using it on? That makes a big difference. :)

Works a lot better and is far more discreet. It'll get earthworms out of the ground too.

I just had a 997C SI put on my boat, pick it up today. Not quite in that price range.

Out in hickland we just use a metal rod with a wooden handle and solder a 110 lead to it. Definately the easy way to get worm.s

Ok, I see ya'll have the same ideas as my "not quite legit" fishing buddy.

BRB, I like the idea, however, my supply of surplus hand grenades has dried up and I don't want to use them up before the Zombie Apocalypse.

Ace's.... I like that idea, as well. HOWEVER, Texas Parks & Wildlife Law Enforcement Division will not view it as a legitimate method of fishing. As I like my job as a LEO (not for PWD unfortunately :( ), I don't think I should attempt that one.

Vortec.... The boat is a wide bottomed 14' jon boat with a 15hp Johnson. I'm setting it up dual purpose as a bass boat & a bow fishing boat. Yes, there will be a build thread when I get started on it.

I've been looking at this Eagle (http://www.academy.com/index.php?page=content&target=products/outdoors/marine/depth_finders&start=0&selectedSKU=0177-00849-1092), this Garmin (http://www.academy.com/index.php?page=content&target=products/outdoors/marine/depth_finders&start=0&selectedSKU=0177-02744-2218), this Hummingbird (http://www.academy.com/index.php?page=content&target=products/outdoors/marine/depth_finders&start=0&selectedSKU=0177-03540-0535) and this other Eagle (http://www.academy.com/index.php?page=content&target=products/outdoors/marine/depth_finders&start=16&selectedSKU=0177-00849-1170). Any other good finders in the same price range will be considered. Thoughts, ideas, suggestions?

I have a Lowrance HDS5 on the dash and an X510c on the bow. Both are awesome but more than you posted money wise.

Of the models you've shown, and in your price range, I would go with the Hummingbird, and Garmin, in that order. Hummingbird is a good value, and is extremely durable. I've had Hummingbird electronics on three different boats over the years and still have their fishfinder on my wifes skiff. I've got a Hummingbird 8000 in the closet from one of my old boats that still works, and it's 21 years old. I have a Garmin GPS on two of my boats and have had no problems with them either. Bear in mind, my stuff gets heavy use and in salt water. In fresh water, either of those units would last a long time.

Another vote for Garmin. Mine is ~9 years old and sees heavy salt water use.

I vote an Eagle 320, same as lowrance x96 I believe. They run about $130. I've had one for 2 yrs with no problems.

I had an Eagle 320 for several years. I recently upgraded to a Humminbird 798SI for the side imaging and GPS features, but the Eagle was a fine fishfinder and I'd have another.
