: Question for Toyota people
trevmountain 09-12-2009, 04:16 PM I recently had a new transmissin installed in my 87 Toyota 4x4 SR5 22re. The transmission is a used one that was pulled from an 86 turbo edition. This tranny is suppose to be the same tranny as what was used in the V6 trucks and is suppose to be beefier. It's also suppose to have a gear driven transfer case instead of a chain. I have two questions regarding this. First in order to determine if it is the turbo tranny is the rubber plug right under the clutch at the bell housing the determining factor or is there something else to distinguish this. Second the 4 wheel drive indicator switch doesn't work. I've got it hooked up correctly to the new tranny but the indicator light doesn't come on when shifting to 4 wheel drive. What do I need to get it functioning?
Thanks
jackson58 09-12-2009, 06:49 PM that rubber plug is located on the part of the trans that the bell housing bolts to.

What?
To the poster, yes, that large rubber plug is an easy way to confirm that you do have the R151 turbo transmission.
As for the light, there is gonna be a sensor right next to the t-case shifter. Based on what you told us your original t-case would have been a top shift, but the turbo unit is a forward shift. In either case there is a sensor right next to the t-case shifter for the 4wd indicator light. Start checking the electrical connections, there are probably a couple, and if that doesn't work make sure the light bulb is good.
TOYOTAPARTS 09-12-2009, 07:11 PM Not to be nit picking but that plug only tells him he has a turbo bell housing.

Sorry for the fawking retarded post, my little brother thought he was being helpfull :shaking:
trevmountain 09-12-2009, 11:24 PM Alright I've got to explain this one a little more, sorry for being vague.
I ran into trouble on the road a month ago heading to Boise Idaho to catch a plane for a week long trip, the stock 5 speed tranny took a shit while driving there. Before leaving I wanted to get things in order to get the tranny rebuilt or replaced so when I returned it would be ready. Believe me I would have dealt with this myself if I had the time. It was one of those situations. Anyway I called around and got ahold of a guy that had a tranny out of an 86 toyota 4x4 turbo edition with 140,000 miles on it and he could throw it in for $800.00. I'm more of a GM guy so the information was new to me. Obviously the details given to me (stronger transmission, gear driven transfer case) were big plus's in my book. It sounded like a better transmission altogether and no adapter plates were needed. But like I said I was out on the road so I just wanted to confirm that I've really got the right transmission. I basically put my trust in him that he was giving me what he was saying he was. I did some research after the fact and I also noticed the rubber plug so I was just trying to verify and confirm. So if there is some other determining number, stamp, code, ect associated with the R151 turbo transmission that's all I would need. The plug was just one thing I noticed.
The four wheel drive indicator light was just an additional problem/question. It's a different transmission out of a different model so I wanted to verify if it's suppose to work by just plugging it in or if other modifications might need to be made. Just trying to save time by talking with the guys that might know this.
big ron 09-13-2009, 01:08 AM the bell housing will have a hole for a rubber plug, about 1 1/2" to 2" round at the bottom of it. if you have a gear driven tcase behind the trany, then you got a r151f (a turbo trany). if you have a chain driven tcase behind the trany you got stiffed:D they just bolted a r151f bellhousing to a v6 trany. now do a little searching and see what tcase is behind your new trany:D
EarlKann 09-13-2009, 09:42 AM Transmission pictures.

If you can find a serial number on it Marlin should be able to confirm what model it is, but BigRon is also right.
Also check out the Toyota forum FAQ. There is a section for Transmission and Transfercase with some tips to ID them.

trevmountain 09-13-2009, 12:56 PM So after reviewing the Bible it looks like the model of tranny that was in the truck was the W56, but it looks like that was also a gear driven transfer case as well. The only difference would be the top shift style vs the forward shift style and the rubber plug. So by just looking at the top of the t-case to verify whether the shifter comes out the top of the transfer case (top shift W56) or if the shifter comes out the top of the transmission (forward shift R151 Turbo). So between the shifter placement and the rubber plug that should be enough to confirm it. Have I got this right guys.
Thanks in advance
big ron 09-14-2009, 08:47 AM r150f (v6 trany) is also a forward shift trany. you need to go by the t case.
TOYOTAPARTS 09-14-2009, 04:30 PM I could be wrong but all the v6's I have are top shift chain driven cases. So if Im right then Marlins pic is wrong, if op has a forward shift t case he would have a turbo trans.
big ron 09-14-2009, 07:31 PM I could be wrong but all the v6's I have are top shift chain driven cases. So if Im right and Marlins pic is wrong, if his is a forward shift t case he would have a turbo trans.your right, I thought v6 tranys were forward shift.
premes69 09-15-2009, 01:31 PM Left is R150F Right is a R151F
Max Volume 09-15-2009, 03:02 PM r150f (v6 trany) is also a forward shift trany. you need to go by the t case.
